Obituaries 2010 – 2015

Bro. Dan Calvo, (San Antonio, Texas), 88, died December 15, 2010. A native of Spain, his career as a Catholic educator spanned five continents.

Fr. Robert Hertweck, (Cupertino, California), 78, died December 10, 2010. May he rest in peace. Fr. Bob first encountered the Marianists at North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and went on to serve in Africa for nearly four decades.

Fr. Jim Mifsud, (Cupertino, California), 75, died September 29, 2010. May he rest in peace. Fr. Jim began his Marianist life as a teacher and served in Korea for 13 years. Fr. Jim served at Queen of Apostles parish in San Jose from 1985-2008. During his time there, he founded a program that helps citizens with troubled pasts find employment.

Fr. Lee Sciarrotta, (Mercy Siena, Dayton), 74, died September 23, 2010. May he rest in peace. Fr. Lee began his Marianist life as a teacher and later went on to serve as the first pastor at St. Jude Parish in Langwarrin, Australia. Fr. Lee returned to the United States in 1988 and served as pastor at Emmanuel Parish in Dayton until 2010.

Fr. Raymond Kacirk, (Detroit, Michigan) 80, died September 6, 2010. May he rest in peace. Fr. Ray began his Marianist life as an educator and later went on to receive a masters and law degree. Along with practicing law pro bono, Fr. Ray was also a licensed social worker and served as an administrator at a halfway house for recovering alcoholics.

Fr. Thomas Schoen, (Mercy Siena, Dayton), 77, died April 14, 2010. May he rest in peace. Fr. Thomas served for nearly 50 years at the University of Dayton, where he was known as Mr. IT. Fr. Thomas is credited with helpingpioneer the Computer Science Department at UD, which he chaired for 17 years.

Fr. Thomas Hogan, (Cupertino, Calif.), 92, died March 28, 2010. May he rest in peace. Fr. Thomas was a high school teacher and administrator and served for more than two decades as a theology professor and department chair, chaplain and dean of students at Chaminade University of Honolulu. He also served as president of the Saint Louis-Chaminade Education Center Corporation.

Fr. Eldon Reichert, (Mercy Siena, Dayton), 87, who died March 20, 2010. May he rest in peace. Fr. Eldon was a teacher, guidance counselor and administrator. He was a teacher and headmaster of Chaminade Secondary School in Malawi for 10 years and served at Aquinas High School in Nairobi, Kenya. Fr. Eldon was director of the guidance department and assistant principal at St. Joseph High School in Cleveland. In his later years, he served at the Christian Life Center and St. Aloysius parish in Cleveland.

Bro. Robert Wade, 84, died December 8, 2011. Bro. Bob served as a working brother for over five decades.

Fr. Paul Ryan, 95, died on December 2, 2011. Fr. Paul was a teacher and administrator and was beloved by students.

Bro. Charles Roggemann, 88, died November 10, 2011. Bro. Charles was a classroom teacher and was known for his love of culture.

Bro. Terry O’Connor, 77, died November 6, 2011. Bro. Terry was a classroom teacher for nearly six decades, and it was his passion.

Fr. Ade Windisch, 83, died October 26, 2011. Fr. Ade was a teacher and administrator throughout the province and the first president of St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis.

Fr. James Imhof, 90, died October 5, 2011. Fr. Jim served as a teacher in Africa and Puerto Rico for many years. He was also an accomplished birdwatcher.

Fr. Richard O’Shaughnessy, 93, died June 29, 2011. Fr. Richard taught at St. Mary’s High School into his late 80s. Fr. Richard was affectionately known as “Fr. Osh.” He loved theater and plays.

Bro. Jim Dods, 72, died June 25, 2011. Bro. Jim was a longtime Catholic educator who had an impact on thousands of students as teacher, counselor and administrator. He was a very kind person.

Fr. Jack Russi, 71, died June 20, 2011. Fr. Jack was a Catholic educator for over four decades and also served as provincial for the former Marianist Province of the Pacific. His brothers remember him as a genuine person and a leader.

Fr. Herbert Pieper, 100, died April 10, 2011. Fr. Herbert served at various Marianist schools and also as a parish priest. He was an honest man who loved serving others.

Fr. Bill Wightman, 82, died April 5, 2011. Fr. Bill served as both a Catholic educator and as a parish priest. He was known as a very kind and charitable man.

Bro. Pierre Weitkamp, 82, died March 19, 2011. Bro. Pierre served as an administrator at various Catholic schools across the Province. He enjoyed Texas and was at Nolan Catholic High School for many years.

Bro. Francis Singler, 94, died February 21, 2011. Bro. Francis was a Catholic educator for nearly five decades. Much of his service was spent in his hometown of St. Louis, particularly at St. Mary’s High School.

Fr. Cy Middendorf, 87, died February 19, 2011. Fr. Cy spent much of his service in the Dayton, Ohio, area, serving as the director of campus ministry at UD and as a chaplain at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Fr. Cy had a Ph.D. in theology.

Bro. Robert Minges, 89, died February 12, 2011. Bro. Robert was a long-time teacher in several Marianist schools. He also oversaw the construction of St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis and Daniel J. Gross Catholic High School in Omaha.

Bro. James Billo, (San Antonio, Texas), 85, died January 13, 2011. Bro. James did not join the Catholic church until he was 48 and took his first vows as a Marianist shortly after. Bro. James spend most of his Marianist life serving at St. Mary’s University in his home state of Texas.

Bro. James Abel, (Dayton, Ohio), 78, died Janurary 6, 2011. Bro. James dedicated most of his life to teaching students at Purcell High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also coached drama and cross country.

Bro. James Pieper, (San Antonio, Texas), 90, died January 6, 2011. Bro. James served as a teacher and librarian for the Marianists across the United States. He also worked as a parish director of religious education.

Bro. Ray McQuade, (San Antonio, Texas), 80, died January 4, 2011. Bro. Ray served as an English teacher in the United States and Puerto Rico and earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Fr. Mike Lisbeth, 64, died December 25, 2012. He was a teacher, counselor, social worker and formation director, described as a “. . . gentle man with a spiritual strength . . . who exuded holiness.”

Fr. Dave Schuyler, 79, died November 19, 2012. He was a canon lawyer and skilled administrator who served in numerous positions for the Marianists as well as for several Catholic dioceses. He also was a friend to many and a warm and gentle soul.

Bro. Bill Callahan, 92, died October 31, 2012. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Marianist Schools.

Fr. Gene Sweeney, 79, died October 27, 2012. He was a beloved educator and parish priest.

Fr. William O’Connell, 85, died October 1, 2012. He served on high school and college campuses for many years.

Fr. Francis Kenney, 90, died September 25, 2012. He served as both a Marianist educator and as a parish priest.

Bro. Joseph Spehar, 85, died September 10, 2012. He was a longtime Marianist educator and co-founded the Lighthouse Renewel Center in Cincinnati.

Bro. Frank Deibel, 103, died July 30, 2012. He served in Marianist schools for decades. At the time of his death, Bro. Frank was believed to be the oldest living male religious in the world.

Bro. Louis Pinckert, 87, died July 26, 2012. He was a former teacher and business manager for the Province. He’ll be remembered for his kind spirit.

Bro. Joe Scheible, 82, died July 11, 2012. Bro. Joe was a Catholic educator on three different continents and was involved with the Boy Scouts.

Bro. Herbert Janson, 88, died March 31, 2012. Bro. Herbert was a longtime teacher at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio.

Fr. John McEnhill, 83, died March 22, 2012. Fr. John served as a high school teacher, counselor and psychologist.

Bro. William Deanhofer, 77, died February 20, 2012. Bro. William served at Marianist schools and retreat centers for over five decades.

Bro. Charles Ehrenfeld, 96, died February 8, 2012. Bro. Charlie was a beloved Marianist educator and environmentalist.

Bro. Gregory DeMoor, 66, died February 1, 2012. Bro. Greg was a Marianist educator known for his generous spirit.

Bro. Donald Winfree, 68, died January 25, 2012. Bro. Donald was a Marianist educator loved by many.

Bro. Art Cherrier, 89, died December 20, 2013. Bro. Art was a teacher and administrator who spent more than 35 years in ministry in Africa. He also served the Society of Mary as a translator.

Fr. Tom Stanley, 91, died November 15, 2013. He was considered a giant in the Society of Mary, having served in the Marianist Generalate, as rector of the Catholic University of Puerto Rico and as an area coordinator for Africa.

Bro. Peter Loehr, 82, died October 14, 2013. He was a teacher and administrator at Marianist high schools who is remembered for his singing voice and his success as a debate team moderator.

Bro. Mel Meyer, 85, died October 12, 2013. He was a gifted and commercially successful artist whose faith and happiness were expressed in more than 10,000 works of art.

Fr. Gerald Pleva, 74, died September 25, 2013. He was a teacher, counselor, campus minister and pastor. He spent much of his career in ministry in the San Antonio area.

Bro. William McCarthy, 89, died August 20, 2013. He was a longtime teacher at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio who also spent more than a decade in ministry in Peru.

Fr. Joseph Lackner, 71, died April 28, 2013. He was a teacher, campus minister, homilist and administrator who especially enjoyed ministry in developing regions.

Fr. Norbert Brockman, 79, died March 29, 2013. He was an educator, an author and a Marianist administrator whose long career included professorships at the University of Dayton and St. Mary’s University.

Bro. Joe Mariscalco, 84, died February 22, 2013. He served the Marianists as a printer and as a caregiver for his fellow brothers. He will be remembered for his service to his community and his commitment to prayer.

Fr. Gus Biehl, 88, died February 10, 2013. He was a teacher, retreat center administrator and chaplain, serving mostly in the St. Louis area. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality, his sense of humor and his love of writing.

Bro. Joe Nu’uanu, 77, died January 23, 2013. He was a joyful and exuberant spirit, described by a fellow brother as a “gifted educator who found his niche in service to the poor.”

Fr. John Melloh, 71, died December 31, 2014. Fr. John was a theologian and university professor who was a well-respected teacher at the University of Notre Dame.

Fr. Michael Barber, 73, died November 17, 2014. Fr. Mike was a high school teacher who later served as a parish priest in rural Mexico. An accident in 2009 left him paralyzed, but his faith remained steadfast.

Bro. Patrick McMahon, 79, died November 1, 2014. Bro. Pat was a teacher who ministered mostly in California. He will be remembered for his skill and compassion with learning-disabled students.

Fr. Daniel Doyle, 77, died October 29, 2014. Fr. Dan was a high school teacher, chaplain and administrator who served as president of Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory.

Fr. Joseph Priestley, 89, died October 11, 2014. Fr. Joe was a preacher and pastor who served mostly in his home state of Hawai’i.

Bro. Richard Roesch, 91, died September 2, 2014. Bro. Richard was a teacher and librarian who spent much of his long ministerial career at Marianist schools in Hawai’i.

Fr. Paul Vieson, 74, died August 6, 2014. Fr. Paul was a high school teacher and university professor who served as archivist for the Marianist Province of the United States.

Fr. Paul Marshall, 66, died July 17, 2014. Fr. Paul was a top administrator in the Province of the United States. A joyful Marianist, Fr. Paul was committed to social and racial justice.

Bro. Thomas Oster, 81, died July 12, 2014. Bro. Tom was a working brother who spent more than three decades in ministry in Eastern Africa.

Bro. Harold Lootens, 90, died May 24, 2014. Bro. Harold was a high school teacher and counselor who was also a talented professional pianist.

Fr. Robert Osborne, 81, died April 27, 2014. Fr. Bob was a teacher, pastor and school administrator who served mostly in the St. Louis area.

Bro. Paul Quinn, 82, died April 23, 2014.
Bro. Paul was a beloved high school religion teacher and campus minister who served mostly in New York and Maryland.

Bro. Raymond Martin, 76, died April 19, 2014. Bro. Ray served as the director of Career Placement Services at the University of Dayton.

Bro. William (Bill) Fackovec, 88, died April 7, 2014. Bro. Bill helped build the Marian Library at the University of Dayton into a renowned resource for religious scholars.

Bro. Richard (Dick) Olsen, 76, died February 22, 2014. Bro. Dick was a gifted mechanical drawing teacher who spent more than two decades in Africa. He ministered as a massage therapist in the second half of his career.

Bro. Francis (Frank) Smith, 69, died January 8, 2014. Bro. Frank was a teacher and pastoral minister who was skilled with computers.

Fr. Joseph Mary Marshall, 61, died December 28, 2015. Fr. Joseph Mary was a much-loved pastor who served at parishes in Eldersburg, Maryland, and San Antonio, Texas.

Fr. John (Jack) McGrath, 80, died December 26, 2015. Fr. Jack was a scholar and leader within the Society of Mary. Among his many accomplishments, he served as Provincial of the former New York Province.

Bro. Leonard Rudy, 81, died December 13, 2015. Bro. Len was a high school teacher and administrator known for his dry humor and his devotion to his students and myriad friends.

Bro. William O’Leary, 86, died December 12, 2015. Bro. Bill ministered as a teacher for four decades, spending 16 years teaching in Latin America. He is remembered for his passion for serving others.

Bro. Robert Johns, 84, died December 2, 2015. Bro. Bob was a working brother who served the Society of Mary and the Church in maintenance roles. He ministered mainly in Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Bro. D. Leo Willett, 90, died November 14, 2015. Bro. Leo was a high school teacher, guidance counselor and administrator for four decades. He was the founding principal of Gross Catholic High School in Omaha, Nebraska.

Bro. James Wisecaver, 73, died October 17, 2015. A creative and energetic man, Bro. Jim ministered as a high school teacher and principal, a college professor and member of the Marianist vocations team.

Fr. James McKay, 98, died October 15, 2015.
Fr. Jim was a high school teacher, administrator, chaplain and parish priest. He is remembered for his mild manner and Irishman’s “twinkle in the eye.”

Bro. Charles “Chas” Lohrenz, 84, died September 28, 2015. Bro. Chas was a teacher and maintenance worker whose service as a gardener provided food for the needy.

Bro. Charles Cummiskey, 91, died September 9, 2015. Bro. Charles was a chemistry professor and university administrator who served at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, for more than five decades.

Bro. Richard Middleton, 87, died August 18, 2015. Bro. Richard was a teacher and librarian who served at Marianist high schools for more than 40 years.

Bro. Kenneth Jung, 92, died April 14, 2015. Bro. Ken was a tireless working brother who is remembered as a cook, baker, beekeeper and poet.

Fr. George Abmayr, 87, died March 31, 2015. Fr. George was a high school teacher and librarian who served mostly in Ohio. He is remembered for his dedication to prayer and to the schools where he ministered.

Bro. Joseph Grieshaber, 76, died March 24, 2015. Bro. Joe was a high school teacher and principal who served in leadership roles for the Society of Mary. He was a caring person who loved to laugh.

Bro. James McCaffrey, 92, died March 4, 2015. Bro. Jim taught business courses at a variety of Marianist schools over the course of a long career. He also founded and led Marianist Affiliate groups.

Bro. Howard Lohrey, 65, died January 24, 2015. Bro. Howard was a long-time math teacher at Archbishop Moeller High School. He is remembered as a skilled, tough and caring teacher.
