Brother Louis Ernst, SM, 81, died Sept. 23, 2017, in San Antonio. Brother Louis began his ministry as a teacher in 1956 at St. Joseph School, a school in Victoria, Texas,formerlystaffed by the Marianists. Three years later, he moved to St. Louis and began a 29-year tenure as a teacher, guidance counselor and administrator at Chaminade College Preparatory. While in St. Louis, Brother Louis earned a master’s degree in education. In 1988, he was called to Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth, Texas, where he served as an educator and tutor, helping students learn math. Due to health reasons, he moved to the Marianist Residence in San Antonio five years ago. While there, his love of history drew him to serve as a volunteer at the Marianist Archives. Brother Louis died of cancer just one day shy of his 82nd birthday. Brother James Fitzgibbons, SM, 81, died Nov. 6, 2017, in San Antonio. Brother Jim began his ministry in 1960 as a teacher at a Marianist high school inOhio.Thefollowing year, he was called to serve as a coun- selor at St. John’s Home, a residential home for boys in Rock- away Park, New York. In 1965, he moved to Zambia to serve as a missionary and educator. His next assignment took him to Nigeria where he served at a Marianist novitiate. In 1986, he moved to Callo, Peru, where he taught English and worked in formation at Colegio San Antonio. Brother Jim returned to the United States in 1991 and worked in an inner-city ministry in New Jersey. In 1995, he was called back to St. John’s Home. Three years later, he moved to Bangalore, India, where he served as a teacher and mentor to aspirants in formation. He returned to Zambia in 2002 as an educator, but was called in 2004 to work in retreat ministry at the Marianist Family Retreat Center in New Jersey. Brother Jim returned to India once more in 2007 to serve at the novitiate community in Ranchi. He returned to the U.S. in 2011 due to failing health. Father Paul Landolfi, SM, 90, died Nov. 16, 2017, in Queens Village, New York. Father Paul spent his early years as a Marianist educator at schools in Kentucky and Ohio before entering seminary in Fribourg, Switzerland. He was ordained in 1955, and for the following three years, served as a teacher, chaplain and administrator at Marianist schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania. In 1965, he began serving in provincial admin- istration for the former New York Province and earned a master’s degree in adminis- tration. In 1968, Father Paul returned to St. John’s Home — a residential home for boys and where he had grown up as a child — and served as a chaplain. While there, he earned a master’s degree in pastoral counsel- ing. Father Paul served one year as a chaplain at Colegio San José in Puerto Rico. In 1975, he was called to direct the Marianist Spiritual Renewal Center in Chester, Pennsylvania, providing spiritual direction and formation for Lay Marianists for 20 years. In 1994, Father Paul returned to New York to work at St. John’s Home, a ministry he continued to serve until 2012. Father Paul spent the remainder of his years in volunteer service while living in a Marianist community in the Marianist Province of Meribah in New York. Brother James Moran, SM, 90, died Sept. 8, 2017, in San Antonio. Brother Jim began his adult life serv- ing in the U.S. Army until he was honor- ably discharged in 1956. Before being called to religious life, he worked for several years in business and health care. Brother Jim began his ministry as a Marianist educator at schools in Michigan and Ohio. Adept at teaching English as a second language, Brother Jim taught for two years at a Marianist ministry in Mexico. In 1998, he moved to Latvia to teach English to semi- narians at the Latvian National Seminary in Riga. He returned to the United States in 2001 and volunteered at Chaminade College Preparatory in St. Louis. In 2004, he accepted a position teaching English in the District of Korea, where he remained for a year. In 2005, he returned to the U.S., where he spent the final years of his ministry at the Alumni Hall Community in Dayton, Ohio. While there, he continued to serve as a tutor to English-language learners. Brother Thomas Payne, SM, 72, died Nov. 3, 2017, in Cupertino, California. Brother Tom spent the first two years of his ministry teaching science and engineer- ing at a Catholic high school in Tennessee. In 1970, he accepted a position in Cincin- nati in which he served as a chaplain in the juvenile court system. Throughout the next 10 years, he worked as a chaplain and crisis management counselor for the Cincinnati Police Division. Brother Tom completed an engineering degree in 1976 and a master’s degree in theology in 1980. He returned to Tennessee to work as a prison chaplain in Memphis. In 1984, he accepted an assignment as director of maintenance at Bergamo Center for Lifelong Learning in Dayton, Ohio. Ten years later, he served as director of property management for the former Cincinnati Province. In 1999, Brother Tom was called to Kenya to serve as property manager for the Marianist Region of Eastern Africa. After four years, he returned to the U.S. to serve in a similar position for the newly formed Marianist Province of the United States. In 2008, Brother Tom moved to Hawaii where he served as environmental safety officer at Chaminade University of Honolulu. Due to failing health, Brother Tom moved to the Marianist community in Cupertino, California, shortly before his death.
