b'HONORING THOSE WHOGAVE SO MUCHFaith moves San Antonio man to clean Marianist headstones By Nathaniel MillerWalking through the Marianist Cemetery at St. Marys University in San Antonio, Joe quietly prays before arriving at a headstone, ploppingdown a five-gallon bucket and getting to work. This is the first headstone that he will clean thissummer morning, starting early7:30 a.mto beatthe punishing Texas heat. The name on this marker, Brother PierreWeitkamp, is familiar, evoking a special memoryin Joe. Weitkamp was his teacher at San AntoniosCentral Catholic High School in the mid-1990s.Joe laughs, recalling howon Fridays Weitkamp asked students if they wanted ice cream, then doing his best impersonation of Weitkampsexchanges. He was just this little viejito, Joe says, usingan affectionate Spanish word for an older person. He would call out for the ice cream, and anotherbrother would bring it out to us.Joes hands show the labor of his anonymous ministry cleaningheadstones at the Marianist Cemetery at St. Marys University inSan Antonio.marianist.com/donate 11'
