Even so, the one dubbed “Maria” took everyone by surprise, including Father Armando José Añeses, when it struck with 155-mph winds on Sept. 20, 2017. Seeking shelter in the corridors of Colegio San José, the Marianist-sponsored school in San Juan where he teaches, Father Añeses, at one point, found himself grabbing onto the handle of a classroom door to avoid being swept off his feet. Ruthless winds battered the building for several hours, unleashing “the worst and scariest experience” of his life, Father Añeses recalls.
