BrotherJosephBarrett, SM, 93, died Aug. 7, 2018, in San Antonio. Bro. Joe began his teaching ministry at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio in 1946, followed by seven years teaching at St. Michael’s, a former Marianist school in Chicago. Starting in 1952, Bro. Joe oversaw residential students at Chaminade College Preparatory-St. Louis for five years. In 1957, he began working in formation ministry as assistant novice director at Marynook in St. Louis, followed by a two-year assignment as assistant vocation director. From 1967 to 1971, Bro. Joe taught at Don Bosco High School, a former Marianist school in Milwaukee. In 1972, he began a long-standing ministry at Daniel J. Gross Catholic High School in Omaha, Nebraska, where he taught religion, social studies and English for 20 years. He also was prefect of residential students and served as a guidance counselor. Bro. Joe retired to the Marianist Residence in San Antonio in 2004 where he took on a special assignment with the “ministry of gratitude,” calling more than 40,000 donors simply to say “thank you.” Known for his good humor, Bro. Joe gained many friends over his lifetime, many of whom were displayed on his “wall of love” — a montage of photographs in his room at the residence. Brother Eugene Frank, SM, 86, died April 22, 2018, in Cupertino, California. Bro. Eugene began his ministry as a math and physics teacher in 1960 at Junipero Serra High School in Califor- nia. Shortly after, he completed a master’s degree in physics, followed by a doctorate in plasma physics. Upon earning his Ph.D., Bro. Eugene taught physics and mathematics at Chaminade University of Honolulu. In 1966, he moved to Ohio to teach physics at Univer- sity of Dayton. Five years later, he returned to Chaminade University as associate pro- fessor of physics and math. Bro. Eugene was fluent in French, Spanish, Korean, Russian and German. A life-long learner, he volun- teered for an assignment in Korea in 1975 where he assisted with faith formation and taught electrical engineering at Songang University. He returned to the States 15 years later to help found the computer studies and informationsystemsdepartmentsatChaminade College Preparatory - West Hills, California. In 1997, Bro. Eugene began working as a province archivist, a role he maintained until retiring to the Cupertino Marianist Community. Father Edward Jach, SM, 86, died June 7, 2018, in Dayton, Ohio. Fr. Ed’s first assign- ment as a Marianist was teaching at St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis in 1953, followed by other teaching assignments at Don Bosco High School in Wisconsin and a short teaching stint at a school in Canada. Fr. Ed attended seminary in Fribourg, Switzerland, and was ordained in 1964. After ordination, he returned to Don Bosco to teach religion and serve as chaplain. He was called into formation ministry in 1968, serving at the Marianist novitiate in Wis- consin and later as formation director at the Chaminade Community in San Antonio and campus minister at St. Mary’s University. In 1978, Fr. Ed was called to serve in parish ministry as pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Helotes, Texas. Twelve years later, he accepted another pastoral assignment as pastor at St. Francis De Sales Parish, a Marianist parish in Cincinnati, where he min- istered for 20 years. In 2010, Fr. Ed accepted the chaplaincy at Siena Woods healthcare center, where he worked and remained an active member of the Siena Woods Commu- nity until his death. Father Richard Kuhn, SM, 90, died July 5, 2018, in Balti- more. Fr. Richard spent many years as a Marianist educator, teaching at Marianist schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania, includ- ing North Catholic in Pittsburgh and Cham- inade in Dayton. He attended seminary in Fribourg, Switzerland, and was ordained in 1958. Fr. Richard returned to the United States to teach scholastics at Mount Saint John in Dayton. In 1960, he returned to high school teaching and also served as chaplain at St. James Catholic High School in Chester, Pennsylvania. This was followed by 25 years of ministry in Catholic high schools includ- ing Holy Trinity in Brooklyn, New York; Chaminade, Hollywood, Florida; Charlotte Catholic, Charlotte, North Carolina; Cardinal Gibbons, Baltimore; and again at St. James. In 1985, he accepted an assignment in retreat ministry at the Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May, New Jersey. Fourteen years later, he accepted a similar assignment at the Christian Family Living Center in North Topsail Beach, North Carolina. When Topsail closed in 2007, Fr. Richard helped launch Hearts on Fire, a Marianist Lay Com- munity in Baltimore where he lived and continued to serve in ministry until his death. Brother John Rohe, SM, 87, died June 13, 2018, in San Antonio. Bro. John’s ministry began in the early 1950s with a teaching assignment at Don Bosco High School in Wisconsin. In 1957, he ventured north to teach at Provencher Collegiate Institute in Canada, while also earning a master’s degree in chemistry from University of Notre Dame. He then went to St. Louis in 1962 to teach at Chaminade College Preparatory. He moved to Texas in 1972 to teach at Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth; and a year at Central Catholic in San Antonio, before moving to Los Angeles to teach at Junipero Serra High School. Bro. John moved to Hawaii and served as an educator at Chaminade University for six years. In 1986, he moved back to Texas and worked in for- mation ministry in San Antonio. He later was called into parish ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Helotes, Texas. In 2006, Bro. John moved to the Marianist Residence in San Antonio. He was plagued by health problems much of his life but continued working in education.
