Meeting people where they are Although Brother Mark works out of an office at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, he frequently is on the road reaching out to young people. He draws on past experience — most recently at University of Dayton, where he earned a master’s degree in pastoral ministry and worked in campus ministry — to “help them listen to God,” he says. “I’m not the one who calls. It’s God,” says Brother Mark. “My job is to listen, to interpret people’s stories in the light of the Gospels and help them figure out where they fit. Discernment is a mutual conversation.” As a millennial, Brother Mark hopes to promote Marianist recruitment efforts through social media. With a newly purchased iPhone, he recently created an account for the Marianists on Instagram (@vocations _marianists.us). His goal is to post frequently about Marianists, showing the joys of being a brother and sharing insights about religious life. “We’ve got to meet people where they are,” Brother Mark says. “One of the places they are is online, but they’re also in church, at coffee shops and serving in the community. I want to host more than discernment retreats; I want to host discernment service days and discernment backpacking trips, things that enable people to hear God’s call, whether in nature or serving at a soup kitchen.” Brother Mark’s outreach also includes his role on a new Marianist ministry team that is creating oppor- tunities for young adults, especially Hispanics, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, a Marianist parish located next to St. Mary’s University. Another big project for Brother Mark is taking care of himself. While camping, woodworking and cooking over an open fire are among his favorite activities to let off steam, he says reinforcing his dedication to Mary is the most important. “I have to renew my vows every day because that’s what I’m called to do,” says Brother Mark. He takes comfort in knowing that anytime he’s faced with challenges, he can go to members of his Marianist community and talk with them. “Anywhere the Marianists are is home for me,” he says. ■ Alex Salinas is communications coordinator for the University Communications Office at St. Mary’s University.
