On Jan. 26, Provincial Marty Solma installed Fr. Chris Wittmann as novice director and Bro. Charles Johnson as assistant novice director for the Province. The Mass was held at the novitiate in Dayton and was followed by a celebratory dinner that was organized and prepared by the novices. Guests included Fr. Chris’ parents and Bro. Charles’ father and brother.

The Province welcomes two new Marianist contacts, Ramón Luzárraga and Joel Maloney. Ramón is a lecturer in the theology department at the University of Dayton and works at UD’s Institute for Pastoral Initiatives. He is drawn to the “balance of work and contemplation” that he sees in Marianist religious life. Joel is a Central Catholic High School graduate (2005) who is currently working at an insurance company and pursuing a master’s degree in theology at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Joel is also co-chair of a young adult ministry at St. Luke’s Parish in San Antonio.

Marianist novices attended a retreat at Governor’s Island in Huntsville, Ohio, in January. Bro. Charles Johnson and Fr. Chris Wittmann led the retreat. During their time at the retreat, the novices worked more than 80 hours on the property.

From Jan. 27 – 29, a vocation discernment retreat was held at TECABOCA in Mountain Home, Texas. Participants delved into the call to religious life during discussions, activities and time spent outdoors. “Please pray for those who participated,” said Sr. Gretchen Trautman. “May the grace of the weekend and listening to God’s call continue in their lives.”

The Sponsorship Task Force of the Province, chaired by Fr. George Cerniglia, met in Dallas in January. The group is focusing on the sponsorship of Marianist institutions as part of the Province’s strategic plan, Vision 2020. Bro. Steve Glodek, director of the Office of Formation for Mission in Philadelphia, shared the work of his office regarding formation support for institutions and ministries. Diane Guerra of the Office of Communications  provided communications guidance. The task force will present a final report to the Provincial Council in December 2012.

On Jan. 28, the Northeast Marianist Family Council sponsored a retreat day in honor of Fr. Chaminade at the Marianist Center in Philadelphia. The event, “A Day with Fr. Chaminade,” featured reflections on Mary by Brain Reavey and on Fr. Chaminade by Bro. Jack Ventura. Carol Weiss, head of the office of spirituality, spearheaded the program.

Fr. The Marianist Lay Formation Initiative (MLFI) is accepting applications and referrals for its 2012 formation program which begins with a retreat in April.  St. Mary’s University Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Thomas Mengler, J.D., as the university’s 13th president, effective June 1, 2012. Mengler currently serves as dean of the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis. Provincial Marty Solma, chancellor of St. Mary’s University, said, “Tom is committed to Catholic higher education, social justice issues, academic quality and the formation of students as servant leaders—all facets integral to the Catholic and Marianist traditions of St. Mary’s University.” Read more.
 Bro. Peter Pontolillo will complete his term as president of Central Catholic High School on June 30. “I am grateful to Brother Peter for his willingness to serve as president at Central Catholic,” said Bro. Ed Brink, assistant for education. “His dedication and commitment to Catholic education is evident not only in this most recent assignment but throughout his career.”
 Bro. Mel Meyer (Curé of Ars, St. Louis) completed artwork for the lobby at SSM St. Mary’s Health Center in St. Louis. The work was unveiled and blessed at a reception on Jan. 19. Bert,” which has a new address: “We need time to pray and be with God,” he writes. “We need time to separate ourselves from our activities and distractions. We can get started by using the Scriptures of the day or our own chosen passages. This will distance us from the noise and endless information that flow into our minds and imaginations.”

Bro. Charles Ehrenfeld (Cupertino, Calif.), 96, who died Feb. 8, 2012, in Cupertino. May he rest in peace. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Feb. 13 at the Cupertino Marianist Community. Fr. Joseph Stefanelli was the presider and homilist. Burial followed the Mass at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Bro. Charles’ obituary will appear in the next issue of FamilyOnline.

Bro. Gregory DeMoor (Marianist Residence, San Antonio), 84, who died Feb. 1, 2012, in San Antonio. May he rest in peace. The Marianist Residence community had a visitation and prayed the rosary for Bro. Gregory on Feb. 3. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Feb. 4 at the Marianist Residence. Fr. William Meyer represented the Provincial Administration and was the presider and homilist. Burial followed the Mass at the Marianist cemetery on the campus of St. Mary’s University. Read Bro. CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY, HONOLULU. On Jan. 25, CUH honored three individuals for their exemplary commitment to Marianist values. Henry Gomes,’74, director of Native Hawaiian Partnerships and former associate provost and biology professor, received the Chaminade Award. Ginger Miller, secretary for Professional Studies and the Hogan Entrepreneurs program, received the Marianist Award. Angela Leilani Salas, a senior majoring in business administration who is active with campus ministry, received the Founder’s Award.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, SAN ANTONIO, hosted its annual Marianist Heritage Liturgy and Awards Day, honoring faculty and staff members for their years of outstanding service. Central Catholic presented its highest honor, the Marianist Heritage Award, to Thomas J. Bronder, ’72, world history faculty member.

CHAMINADE-MADONNA, HOLLYWOOD, FLA., honored its “modern-day founders” on Jan. 21 in Davie, Fla. Honorees included staff members Ron Belanger and Rachel Koebel, alumna Paulette D’Angelo Vitale ‘71, and former board member Greg Vitale. The school hosted a Founders Liturgy on Jan. 23, during which Marianist priests and brothers from the Hollywood community renewed their vows.

DANIEL J. GROSS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, BELLEVUE, NEB., hosted its Founder’s Week activities from Jan. 17-20. The school focused on a different characteristic of a Marianist education each day. The school’s Marianist LIFE community delivered a presentation about Our Lady of Nazareth Primary School in Nairobi, Kenya. Below, LIFE members portrayed Marianist Founders during lunch periods while collecting for donations to OLN. They raised over $1,700 to support 14 OLN students for one year.


NOLAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, FORT WORTH, TEXAS. As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, Nolan Catholic capped off the school’s annual Marianist Heritage Week by inviting Vikings around the world to participate in a Day of Prayer on Jan. 19. Bishop Kevin Vann presided at the liturgy.
