MARIANIST FAMILY REPRESENTED AT CATHOLIC YOUTH CONFERENCE

From Nov. 17 – 19, Bros. David Betz, Sean Downing, Bob Jones, Tom Wendorf, and Novice Norm Capinpin represented the Marianist Family at the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis. More than 23,000 Catholics, mainly high-school age, participated in the conference, which featured a Vocation Village where the Marianists and other organizations staffed booths and displays. At the Marianist Family booth, representatives handed out 500 logoed notepads and promoted Marianist religious life and the three Marianist universities. Held every two years, the NCYC is the largest gathering of young Catholics of its kind in the country. The National Catholic Collegiate Conference is held in conjunction with the NCYC. The NCCC’s 200 college-age Catholics included a group from The University of Dayton, which visited the Marianist Family booth. Visit the Province vocation webpage.

WEST HILLS, CALIF., COMMUNITY HOSTS VOCATION DAY

Bro. Jack Dempsey, Fr. Jim Mueller and Bro. Tom Oles at the West Hills, Calif., vocation event. Bro. Tom wore a “topi” hat, the national head covering for Nepalese men, which was given to him during his ministry in Nepal.

On Oct. 12, the West Hills, Calif., Marianist community and Chaminade College Preparatory in West Hills co-hosted a Vocation Day. Marianist Family members and Chaminade faculty discussed their personal callings and journeys. The day featured presentations to more than 700 students in grades six through eight.

The program was organized by religion teacher Kate Lospalluto, Marianist LIFE Pacific regional director and Chaminade graduate. Along with Kate, Marianist Family speakers included Bro. Jack Dempsey, Fr. Jim Mueller, Bro. Tom Oles, Joe Melendrez (associate pastoral minister), Jackie Rodriguez (middle school director of campus ministry) and religion teachers.

On Nov. 14, the campus ministry departments of Saint Louis School and Chaminade University of Honolulu, in collaboration with the Province Office of Vocations and the Hale Malia Marianist community, hosted a discernment evening titled, “What’s The Point?” Eight young men from SLS and five men and women from CUH began the evening with Mass celebrated by Fr. Ken Templin and then joined the Hale Malia community for dinner. Mallory Green (Lay Marianist and SLS campus minister), Novice Brandon Paluch and Fr. John Thompson gave presentations, which were followed by discussions.

RENEWAL PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS MAKE PILGRIMAGES

Renewal program participants at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, Spain.

Participants in the the Marist-Marianist Third Age Renewal Program in Manziana, Italy, took recent pilgrimages to Spain and France. Bros. Chester Burnog, Larry McBride, Bros. Dave Murphy, Dave Quigley and Phil Aaron were guided by Bro. Augustin Valganon and Pedro Berganzo. In Bordeaux, France, Fr. Bernard Vial escorted the group to Fr. Chaminade’s birthplace, Perigueux, and visited the city’s ancient cathedral. Fr. Robert Witwicki accompanied the group to Agen, where the pilgrims prayed at the tomb of Adèle de Batz de Trenquelléon, founder of the Marianist Sisters, and toured her family estate. The participants attended Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Verdelais, where Marianists have ministered for the last five years. While in Bordeaux, the participants also enjoyed walking tours of the neighborhood where Fr. Chaminade developed the sodalities associated with the Chapel of the Madeleine. The trip included a day in Lourdes, France. The renewal program runs from October through December 2011.

MEET THE NORTHEAST MARIANIST FAMILY COUNCIL

On Nov. 12, the Northeast Marianist Family Council met at the Marianist Center in Philadelphia. The newly formed Council represents five Society of Mary communities and 10 Lay Marianist communities. The Council seeks to promote unity and collaboration among all the branches of the Marianist Family in the northeast region of the United States (and with the broader Marianist Family in general) and to make the founders’ vision of “creating a community of communities to change the world” a lived reality.

LAUREN JONES: A MUSP ALUMNA UPDATE

Lauren Jones, a 2002 graduate of the Marianist Urban Students Program (MUSP) at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, reports that she is busy completing her final year of studies at the University of Findlay. In May 2012, she will graduate with a doctorate of physical therapy. While completing her studies, she will spend a clinical rotation at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital Toledo, Ohio, and then plans to complete a physical therapy internship abroad, possibly Ecuador. She is working at an assisted living facility and serves as the computer labs manager at VASJ. In addition, she got married over the summer.

Launched in 1992, MUSP identifies high-potential students in urban Marianist elementary schools and offers them financial, academic and social support to succeed at Marianist high schools. Read more about MUSP.

NOLAN, TECABOCA GRAD TAKES TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

Tom Kleuser, class of 1968 at Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth, Texas, and his wife Mary Ann visited the Marianist Residence in San Antonio on Nov. 13.

When Tom attended Nolan, Bro. Richard Dix served as principal. “He looks fitter now than when I was a student in the 60s,” said Tom. Tom recalls that then-Brother Gene Sweeney was very popular with the students, especially for his keen wit and intellect. I still remember many of the important life lessons that all of the good brothers and priests taught us.”

Tom also attended TECABOCA in Mountain Home, Texas, in 1958 and 1959. During Tom’s camp sessions, Frs. Neumann and Schorp, Fr. Gene and Charles Rahe served as camp counselors. Tom met Bro. Louis Ernst in 1998. “He was the unofficial cheering section for the Nolan Cross Country team,” Tom explains. All three of Tom and Mary Ann’s sons attended Nolan and ran cross country for the school.

CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS VISIT MARYLAND AVENUE COMMUNITY

On Nov. 11, a group of students from Chaminade University of Honolulu visited the Maryland Avenue Marianist community in St. Louis. The students were in St. Louis to participate in the annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students. St. Mary’s University students also participated in the conference.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT PROVIDES SHELTER FOR MARIANIST GARDEN

Cole Retzloff, an Eagle Scout candidate and junior at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School in Dayton, recently finished his Eagle Scout service project: a garden shed for the Mount Saint John nature preserve in Dayton. The service project represents a scout’s best effort to give back to his community, and Cole chose to give back to the Marianist Environmental Education Center (MEEC) when he learned that the center needed a shelter. The big construction push came in early September when Cole organized a Labor Day Barn Raising, which drew more than 20 scouts and their parents. Cole finished the project and handed over the keys to Sr. Leanne Jablonski, FMI, in time for MEEC’s 25th anniversary celebration.

Service in the Marianist tradition runs in the Retzloff family. Cole’s great-grandparents were Lay Marianist Associates and his grandfather, Walter G. Retzloff, graduated from Central Catholic High School and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.

	On Nov. 9, Bro. Don Geiger (Meyer Hall, Dayton), founder of the Marianist Environmental Education Center, received the 2011 Partner of the Year Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Greater Dayton Conservation Fund of the Dayton Foundation. From Nov. 13 – 18, Fr. George Cerniglia (Hale Malia, Honolulu), rector of Chaminade University of Honolulu, facilitated and moderated the Provincial Chapter for the Congregations of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. The chapter was the first for the new Province of the United States after a merger of provinces. The Marianists and the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts have been closely associated in Hawai’i for more than 100 years.

 

	Bro. Jack Somerville (Marianist Novitiate, Dayton) reports that the Mount Saint John facilities department is building a greenhouse in memory of Josh Ray, an MSJ employee who died in July 2011. Josh’s family donated the funds for the purchase of the greenhouse.

The Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty honored Bro. Brian Halderman with its Appreciation Award. Bro. Brian is a member of the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative’s Anti-Death Penalty Issue Team. Congratulations, Bro. Brian!

 

On Nov. 12, several brothers celebrated the wedding of Michael and Lauren Ackel in San Antonio, Texas. Michael, an employee at the Marianist Residence in San Antonio, is a physical trainer who works with several of the brothers. Attending the celebrations were Bros. Speakers included Dr. Larry Hufford, professor of political science/international relations at Saint Mary’s University in San Antonio. Dr. Hufford also facilitated discussion with CUH’s Marianist Educational Associates.   CHAMINADE JULIENNE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, DAYTON, was recognized as a “Project Lead the Way” nationally certified school on Nov. 3. CJ is the only Catholic high school in the nation — and only one of four secondary schools in Ohio — to be dually certified in biomedical sciences and pre-engineering by Project Lead the Way. Above, students, faculty and staff at Chaminade Julienne raised more than $3,100 and collected approximately 2,000 non-perishable items for local and world service organizations in the week leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The event features bowls made by local students and artists to benefit Operation Food Search.  On Oct. 8, Chaminade juniors and seniors from Margie Korb’s biology and environmental sciences classes participated in the River Des Peres Watershed Coalition Trash Bash. Twenty-five students participated in the event, along with teachers Alpha Bangura, Bro. Jim Eppy, Margie, Tim Pendleton ’89 and Sudesh Shah.
