NEWLY PROFESSED BROTHERS BEGIN NEW MINISTRIES


At the ceremony, the novices receive a blessing from Assistant Provincial Fr. Jim Fitz and Provincial Stephen Glodek.

Following their profession of first vows on May 20 in Dayton, the Provincial Council announced the following personnel assignments for the four new brothers.

Bro. Armando Añeses will join the San Juan Puerto Rico community and teach at Colegio San José. Bro. Dennis Bautista will join the faculty at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and teach in the English-Communication Arts Department. He also will study theology at either St. Mary’s or the Oblate School of Theology and join the Casa Maria community. Bro. Alfredo Chávez will study humanities at the University of Dayton and join the Stonemill-Kiefaber community. Bro. Andy Kosmowski will study religion and philosophy and complete teaching studies in earth science and chemistry at the University of Dayton. Bro. Andy will join the Trinity Avenue community.

Our prayers and best wishes for the brothers as they begin their new ministries!

FIRST VOWS IN RANCHI, INDIA


Eleven novices took first vows in Ranchi, India on May 1. At the ceremony, front row, Bros. UN GRANTS MARIANISTS OFFICIAL NGO STATUS

Bro. Steve O’Neil announces that “Marianists International” has been accredited as an official Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) by the United Nations Department of Public Information. This status allows a Marianist representative to have access to the UN grounds and all open meetings of the UN bodies, as well as access to weekly NGO briefings. The Marianists will also have the opportunity to collaborate and share information on its worldwide humanitarian efforts with various organizations of the UN. Thank you to Bro. Steve and lay Marianist Richard Sroczynski for their work in obtaining this accreditation.

 

PROVINCE DIRECTORY COMMITTEE MEETS

The Province Directory Committee met May 30 to May 31 in St. Louis to review comments received from Province members regarding drafts for the Province Directory. The committee reviewed responses from 23 communities and 63 individuals. A revised draft of the text will be presented at the Provincial Chapter meeting in October. The committee’s goal is to have a final draft ready for approval by the March 2007 Provincial Chapter. Information regarding the directory committee meeting also was sent by e-mail to all brothers last week.

 

PERSONNEL NEWS

The following personnel assignments have been made by the Provincial Council. All of them have taken place or will take place over the summer. We pray for the following brothers in transition:

Fr. John Bolin (Marianist Hall, Honolulu) will move to the Cupertino community.   Fr. Gerry Hammel (Helotes, Texas) is on sabbatical. Additional information will be announced in an upcoming issue of FamilyOnline.
Bro. Tom Heinle (Woodlawn Ave., San Antonio) will work in university ministry at St. Mary’s University and explore possibilities for an environmental education center at TECABOCA.   Bro. Howard Hughes (Baltimore) will move to the Riordan community in San Francisco when the Baltimore communities are realigned over the next several months.
Bro. Paul Jablinski (Alumni Hall, Dayton) will move to the Marianist Residence in San Antonio.   Bro. Charles Johnson (Lindell Blvd., St. Louis) will move to the Marybrook community in St. Louis and continue his ministry as Province Director of Vocations.
Bro. George Kemmett (Trinity Avenue, Dayton) will move to the St. Clair Avenue community in Cleveland with ministry at St. Aloysius/St. Agatha School.   Fr. Jerry Pleva (Helotes, Texas) has moved temporarily to the Marianist Residence in San Antonio and will be on sabbatical. More information will appear in an upcoming issue of FamilyOnline.
Bro. John Rohe (Helotes, Texas) has moved temporarily to the Marianist Residence in San Antonio.   Bro. Don Schaaf (Sawmill, Dayton) has moved to Mercy Siena Gardens, Dayton.
Fr. Oscar Vasquez will minister at Chaminade College Preparatory School in St. Louis and continue to reside at the Marybrook community in St. Louis.   Fr. Don Wallace (San Juan, Puerto Rico) will be on sabbatical from his position as chaplain at Colegio San José during the fall semester. Fr. Ted Ley (West Hills, Calif.) will fill in.

LITURGY COMMISSION WILL OFFER RESOURCES

Bro. Mike Grady reports that the Province Liturgy Commission – Fr. Jerry Chinchar (chair), Bro. Bob Resing, Fr. Paul Fitzpatrick and Bro. John Melloh – met at the Stonemill community in Dayton on May 12. (Bro. Jack Somerville is serving in Lusaka.) A new section on liturgies soon will be added to the Province PORTAL. Send suggestions for liturgical documents or resources that could be posted on the PORTAL to Fr. Jerry at chinchar@gmail.com. The committee discussed the following:

  • Revision of funeral policies and procedures
  • The leadership ritual and the missionary ritual
  • A ritual for affiliation ceremonies
  • Resources for community celebrations
  • Community needs for communal prayer life and style
  • Liturgical needs for retreats in 2007 and 2008
  • Spanish translation of a Marian Prayer of Consecration

MEA PROMOTE MARIANIST LIFE ON CAMPUS

Marianist Educational Associates (MEA), individuals who work at the three Marianist universities, made a pilgrimage to France and Spain in May to learn more about the history of the Marianist Family. The group will use this knowledge in their work on campus to promote the Marianist way of life.

The MEA program was designed by the Association of Marianist Universities to help the universities foster their Marianist heritage. Bro. Ray Fitz, AMU executive director, developed the formation program. Bro. Ray also works with the three universities to enhance the Marianist identity on campus. Fr. Bernie Lee (St. Mary's University) coordinated the trip, which was also attended by Fr. Gene Contadino, UD's director of Marianist Outreach. Read more.

 

NEW BUILDING COMPLETED IN INDIA

Over 300 parishioners and friends attended a celebratory Mass and reception to bid farewell to the Marianists at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church May 25 in Helotes, Texas. Fr. Gerry Hammel presided and was assisted by Bro. John Rohe as lector and Fr. Jerry Pleva as homilist. Bro. Mike O'Grady, assistant for religious life, represented the Provincial Council at the celebration. The reception included a slide show and comments from parishioners paying tribute to the Marianists who worked at OLG. Read a prayer from Fr. Jerry’s homily.

Bro. Ralph Mravintz (Indiana Avenue, Dayton), 80, who died May 23, 2006, in Dayton. May he rest in peace. Bro. Ralph worked as a high school teacher, counselor and admissions director at the University of Dayton. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 30 at Queen of Apostles Chapel, Mount St. John, Dayton. Burial was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Fr. Joseph Lackner presided; Fr. Bro. Francis Dames (Marianist Residence, San Antonio), 96, who died May 16, 2006. May he rest in peace. A funeral liturgy was celebrated May 20 at the Marianist Residence chapel in San Antonio with burial at the Marianist cemetery. WHO'S DOING WHAT

Fr. Ted Ley (West Hills, Calif.), who is on sabbatical, recently visited the Alumni Hall community in Dayton and paid a visit to Fr. Don Bracht at Mercy Siena.

Bro. Mel Meyer (Curé of Ars, St. Louis) was recently featured in a two-page spread in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch detailing his innovative techniques for creating paper art. Read the article.

Bro. Peter Pontolillo (Secretary General, Rome) was honored at the National Catholic Educational Association annual meeting in April in Atlanta. Bro. Peter, a former NCEA executive committee member and committee president, and longtime member of the Department of Chief Administrators of Catholic Education, marked his 40th year of attendance at the NCEA meeting. Later this year, Bro. Peter will return to the Province after 10 years as secretary general.

Fr. John Leies (Marianist Residence, San Antonio) has been in the San Antonio media several times recently to discuss “The Da Vinci Code.” Fr. John appeared on Catholic Television May 20, KEN-5 (CBS) morning talk show “Great Day SA” May 26 and in two articles in the Today’s Catholic newspaper.

Governor's Island recently welcomed Fr. Tony Jansen and Bros. Les Kaehler and Phil Aaron. Fr. Tony will return to Lusaka, Africa, in June, and Bro. Lester will assume the director position at the Marianist Residence in San Antonio.

Bro. Frank O'Donnell addressed the annual Urban Ministries dinner of the Archdiocese of Baltimore on May 17 at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. Bishop Denis Madden and Cardinal Keeler sponsored the dinner. Frank spoke on the Marianist charism and the order's 136 years in Baltimore. The Marianists arrived in 1870 to teach in a German-American parish served by the Redemptorists.

Prayers and best wishes to Andy Hill, who has resigned his position as director of the Service Learning Center at St. Mary's University to pursue graduate study in law. Read Andy’s letter to the community.

Congratulations to Sr. Grace Walle, minister of the Law School at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, who received the 2006 Liberty Bell Award from the San Antonio Young Lawyers Association. Sr. Grace was recognized as a non-lawyer for her work in promoting justice and legal education in the community.

AN INTERVIEW WITH DACIAN VOGT

Dacian Vogt is no stranger to the Marianists or to serving others. His father, Jim Vogt, is the director of the MSJC, and his mother, Susan Vogt, is executive secretary for the MLNNA. Growing up, Dacian spent time in the Over the Rhine district of Cincinnati and was familiar with the Marianist Voluntary Service Communities program, the precursor of the current Marianist Volunteer program. Senate Debate on Estate Tax This month the Senate will take up the repeal or reform of the estate tax. Many believe this tax is beneficial to our society as a whole. Contact your senators today about the tax and spending policies we value as a nation.

Immigration The U.S. Senate passed S. 2611, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act (CIRA) on May 24. Read about the legislation and next steps in enacting a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

Katrina and New OrleansBros. Jerry Sullivan, Ray Fitz, Phil Aaron, Bob Moriarity and Ed Zamierowski, Fr. Ted Cassidy and Myles McCabe participated in a Marianist immersion trip to New Orleans May 18 to May 23. The group cleared houses and classrooms and prayed with victims of Hurricane Katrina. “After seeing the misery that Katrina brought to so many people, I can never again imagine that life is difficult for me,” said Bro. ST. LAURENCE COLLEGE - DUBLIN Ireland’s Minister of Education, Mary Hanafin, paid an official visit May 22 to open the school’s new science facilities. In addition to approving funds to refurbish a science classroom, Hanafin pledged additional funding to SLC next year.

ST. MARY’S HIGH SCHOOL


At the NCEA meeting, Rosalie Henry, Jo Ann Matson (St. Mary’s), George Henry (St. Louis Archdiocese superintendent of secondary schools), Fr. Mitch Doyen (assistant superintendent), Jane Goff (St. Mary’s assistant principal), Barb Bohn (St. Mary’s), Bro. John Habjan (Marianist office of education) and Fr. Tim Kenney (assistant for education)

St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis was one of 12 schools nationwide to be honored by Today’s Catholic Teacher magazine at the National Catholic Educational Association’s annual meeting in April in Atlanta. The magazine recognized St. Mary’s for its innovative “Nathaniel’s Journey” project aimed at easing the transition to high school for incoming freshmen and fostering their spiritual growth.

NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL alumnus General Michael Hayden ’63, was confirmed as head of the CIA May 26. At North Catholic, Gen. Hayden was an athlete, honor student and member of the spiritual and history clubs and student United Nations group.

ARCHBISHOP RIORDAN HIGH SCHOOL Congratulations to senior Leslie Diep, grand prizewinner of an art contest sponsored by Safeway, Inc. and Lucerne dairy products. Using a cow sculpture as his canvass, Leslie’s winning entry was selected from among 8,000 entries. He and his art teacher, Julie Smiley, will receive $1,000 each. ARHS will receive $20,000!

PURCELL-MARIAN HIGH SCHOOL Forty-six students and seven adults traveled to Biloxi, Miss., recently to assist with hurricane relief efforts. The group worked on clean-up of a Boy Scout camp and town hall building and assisted with clearing debris from homes. Read a student’s account of the trip.

BRO. JIM ABEL HONORED AT PURCELL-MARIAN

Bro. Jim Abel (Mercy Siena, Dayton) was honored for his 37 years of service to Purcell-Marian High School with a surprise tribute May 26. Former colleagues and students recognized his many contributions as a teacher, moderator of the drama club, business manager and “go to” person for countless school projects.

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE MEETS IN ST. LOUIS

The Communications Technology Committee met for the first time in St. Louis May 24 to May 26 to determine how technologies such as blogs, videocasts and videoconferencing can help Province members communicate better. The group also made recommendations regarding the Province Web site, PORTAL and FamilyOnline.

MARIANIST FELLOWS CELEBRATE GRADUATION


Three years ago a group of UD students formed the Marianist Fellows on campus. This group is committed to giving witness to the Marianist charism at the University of Dayton. Throughout each academic year, the students engage in educational sessions, service opportunities, retreats, and assisting the Office of the Rector with student driven Marianist events. The Fellows came together to celebrate the graduation of some of the members. The photograph includes A.J. Wagner and Joan McGuinness Wagner, who serve as moderators for the Fellows.

CSMC PRESENTS FAMILY RETREAT


Pati Krasensky, interim director of CMSC in Philadelphia, reports that CMSC presented a family retreat for the “Coalition to House the Homeless” in Elizabeth, N.J. Eight families attended the event, which was staffed by retreat team members from New York and New Jersey.
