On May 20, novices
Armando José Añeses Bocanegra, Andrew J. Kosmowski,
Alfredo Chávez Bernal and Dennis R. Bautista
professed first vows during a Eucharist at Queen of Apostles Chapel
at Mount Saint John in Dayton.
After a greeting from
Bro. Tom Redmond, assistant director of novices, the
multi-cultural ceremony began with Marianist contact Brandon
Alana sounding a conch shell trumpet, an ancient Hawaiian signal
for communicating messages. Bro. Franklin Pao and
Bro. Dennis recited the traditional chants of the Hawaiian
call to worship as the celebrants processed toward the altar.

At the ceremony, Fr. Jim, Bro. Stephen, Bros. Armando, Andy,
Dennis and Alfredo, and Fr. Dave
|
Fr.
Jim Fitz, Assistant Provincial, presided over the Mass. Fr.
Dave McGuigan, director of novices, was the homilist and Provincial
Stephen Glodek received the first vows. The celebration, attended
by over 300 people, included a mixture of songs and prayers in English,
Hawaiian and Spanish. A reception followed at Bergamo Center at Mount
Saint John.
The assignments for
the new brothers are being finalized by the Provincial Council and will
appear in the next issue of FamilyOnline. Our
prayers and best wishes to our newly professed brothers!

ANNOUNCES WITHDRAWAL FROM PARISH

Fr. Gerry Hammel at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish Helotes,
Texas |
On May 15, Provincial
Stephen Glodek announced the withdrawal of the Marianists from
Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Helotes, Texas. Archbishop José
Gomez of San Antonio has announced that a new pastor and associate pastor
will take over the parish on June 1, 2006. The Province had been in
dialogue with the archdiocese about a gradual withdrawal of personnel
from the parish, but the archbishop wanted to move on the transition
more quickly.
The Province is deeply
grateful for the years of service to the people of Helotes by many Marianist
religious. In a special way, the Province notes the service of the present
pastoral staff: Fr. Gerry Hammel, Fr. Jerry Pleva, Bro. John
Rohe and the late Fr. Charles Oyabu. The Marianists
have left a proud legacy of lay leadership and formation and deep Marianist
roots among the people of Helotes. The decision to withdraw from Helotes
is the result of dialogue and discernment of the Province Council since
April 2004 concerning the age and availability of our parish ministers
throughout the Province.
The Marianist presence
in the Helotes area dates to the late 1930s, when Marianist priests
began saying Mass at the ranches surrounding St. Mary's University to
serve the families of the students. Our Lady of Guadalupe was built
in 1942.
