MARIANISTS
ARE SHOWCASED AT LA CONGRESS

Sr. Vange Escobar, Fr. Ken Templin and Aspirant Tom
Farnsworth chat with a visitor at the Marianist exhibit in
the LA Congress exhibition hall.
The Marianists were
represented in force at the annual Los Angeles Religious Education Congress
March 30 - April 2 in Anaheim, Calif. The conference is the nation's
largest gathering of Roman Catholics, with over 40,000 attending this
year. According to Vocation Director Bro. Charles Johnson,
several members of our formation program first met the Marianists at
the LA Congress.
The Marianist presence
was centered in an inviting "living room" booth in the exhibition
hall. Representatives from the SM, FMI, MLC (Marianist Lay Communities)
and MVP (Marianist Volunteer Program) spoke with hundreds of people
about the possibilities within Marianist life. Fifty people filled out
cards requesting follow-up help in their discernment process. Bro.
Jim Wisecaver (West Hills, Calif.) is contacting several of
these people about attending a Marianist discernment weekend at the
end of May in the Los Angeles area.

CENTER RENOVATION UNDERWAY

At the groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of the Marianist Center
on April 18, contractors Larry and Mike Nibbi,
Bro. John Haster, architects Milan Gill and
Tony Pantaleoni, Bros. Richard Dix and Tom
Suda and Bob Nibbi. General contractor for
the project is Nibbi Brothers. Bro. John and Fr. Dave Schuyler gave
remarks. (Larry Nibbi and Tony Pantaleoni are alums of Archbishop Riordan
High School.) Photo courtesy of Bro. Jim Leahy
An extensive renovation
of the Marianist Center in Cupertino, Calif., will
transform the property into a full retirement center with a capacity
for 27 brothers and priests as well as 10 guest rooms. The property
includes three buildings that will be connected by covered walkways:
Chaminade Hall (dining for 50, a large chapel, community
room and offices), St. Mary's Hall (residence for active
retired) and St. Joseph's Hall (residence for those
needing care). Bro. John Haster, community director
and owner's rep for the project, said the brothers will especially love
the flat terrain for walking, and the beautiful gardens and fountains.
Bro. Tom Suda is assisting with the renovation, which
should be complete in March 2007. Brothers in Cupertino currently live
in two residences -- Villa St. Joseph and San Juan (provincial office
for the former Province of the Pacific). Both residences are on the
sales market.
The Marianist Center was built as a formation house for the former
Province of the Pacific in the early 1980s, just down the road from
the San Juan and Villa St. Joseph residences. In the early 1990s, the
Center began a new life as a retreat and conference center. In 2003,
the retreat center closed.
