Bro. Martin

of service to the Martin McMurtrey Scholarship Fund. The men both taught
at Central Catholic and created the fund to help deserving youths attend
Catholic schools. One of many fundraising tactics was writing and selling
books. They have collectively published 12 books, including The
Mariachi Bishop, a biography of former Archbishop Patrick F. Flores.
The fund has granted more than $1 million in scholarships
and served more than 3,000 students seeking a Catholic education. Congratulations

Artists at Work
BRO.
HOWARD HUGHES - RENOWNED MUSICIAN
Over
a thousand documented compositions. Hundreds of hymns printed by a dozen
publishers. Scores of commissioned pieces. The volume of music produced
by Bro. Howard Hughes (Roland Ave., Baltimore) is astounding,
spanning more than four decades. Read
a list of his published works. His music has been played
during papal Masses, the bicentennial celebration of the Archdiocese
of Baltimore, the Christmas midnight Mass at the Basilica of the National
Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., and at the
installation of the new bishop of the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese.
Bro. Howard studied at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, Alliance
Française in Paris, Institut Catholique de Paris and New York
University. He earned a bachelor's degree in education from UD, a master's
degree in French from Western Reserve University and a master's degree
in liturgical music from Catholic University of America. Howard says
playing for a papal Mass and playing at St. Peter's Basilica were highlights
of the time he spent in Rome as director of the Generalate community.
Bro. Howard encourages persistence when learning music. "It's like
learning a language. You work with what God has given you, use the voice
you have been given."
