PEACE & JUSTICE UPDATE:

KATRINA. Marianist parishes, schools and communities have contributed more than $205,000 for the victims of Gulf Coast storms. Approximately $41,000 of the total has been given to a Province Relief Fund, which will be distributed with input from the Marianist New Orleans community. Marianist Web site.

SHARING FUND. There has been an unprecedented response to the Sharing Fund. We received 130 grant proposals for a total of $928,546. Of the total, 29 were endorsed by Marianist communities; 28 by individual Marianists. Unfortunately, we have only $250,000 to allocate. The Allocations Committee will make decisions in January, with distributions in February.

LEGISLATIVE ALERT. Congress still threatens to make deep cuts in federal programs that serve the poor and vulnerable. Indicate your concern to congress. Marianist Web site.

MALAWI. UNICEF reports that without intervention, 42 million people in Malawi will not have access to food by March 2006. Data show that since 1992, Malawian children's nutritional status has not improved. More information.

RETREAT CENTER REACHES OUT TO DIVERSE CULTURES

The Marianist Sharing Fund is helping Fr. Ted Cassidy expand programs to encourage cultural and ethnic diversity at the Marianist Retreat Center in Cape May Point, N.J. Twenty-three participants enjoyed Latino music, shared devotions to Mary, performed fun skits and feasted on Hispanic foods. In April 2005, the center held its annual "African-American Revival Black Catholics Retreat." The 34 participants were treated to African American music, food and art. Fr. Paul Marshall served as chaplain. "The black Catholic community has come to feel comfortable at the retreat center. Now we see grandmothers inviting their grandchildren because they realize how this strengthens family life," said Fr. Ted.

A THOUGHT

"Take time to be aware that in the very midst of our busy preparations for the celebration of Christ's birth in ancient Bethlehem, Christ is reborn in the Bethlehems of our homes and daily lives. Take time, slow down, be still, be awake to the Divine Mystery that looks so common and so ordinary yet is wondrously present."

Ed Hays, "A Pilgrim's Almanac"
