Marianist Artists at Work
BRO. JOE ASPELL - A CONSUMMATE ARTIST

Bro. Joe and Maureen O'Rourke (NACMS, Marianist Volunteer Program) in front of his sculpture of "St. Francis and the Leper" at St. Francis parish in San Jose.

Bro. Joe Aspell (San Jose, Calif.) is an award-winning artist whose creations encompass many areas-painting, sculpting, graphics, landscape architecture, furniture and stained glass. He earned his master's degrees from San Jose State University in painting and from the University of California at Santa Barbara in art history. He has studied in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Korea, Japan, China and Mexico. One of his most recent creations-a tabernacle created for Resurrection Church in Aptos, Calif.-was honored with the "Bene Award" given by Liturgy and Ministry magazine for a liturgical art competition. "Being an artist is a different path that has the ability to reach people in a way that others can't. While I love the intellectual life, such as in teaching, sometimes it doesn't reach others as quickly and deeply as art can," Bro. Joe says.

Bro. Joe built this altar for the chapel in the new science building at Chaminade College Preparatory in Chatsworth, Calif.

FROM THE SCHOOLS . . .

ST. LAURENCE COLLEGE. Congratulations to St. Laurence College in Dublin, Ireland, ranked second in the country in sending its graduates to college. More than 92 percent of last year's graduating class went on to study at universities, according to the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland. In an article from the Sunday Times - Ireland, "Although two of the top three places nationally are filled by non fee-paying schools, 13 of the top 20 require fees for attendance. One that bucked the trend was St. Laurence College in Loughlinstown, Dublin. Run by the Marianist order, the non-fee-paying school came second nationally . . . Anne McCarry, the deputy principal at St Laurence, said the college's support network for career planning and study timetabling enabled students to realise their potential."

MYSTERY MARIANIST UNVEILED . . .

It's Bro. Howard Hughes (Roland Ave., Baltimore), noted Marianist musician and composer. Bro. Howard's life lesson: "I try to do my best each day and hope that my Angel records it in my dossier. Each day I rise early to start another project or to try to finish one, and I pray that God may give me the grace to be helpful to three friends of mine who are on death row and with whom I correspond regularly. I count on Divine Mercy that something I do each day will help me to persevere."
