VOCATION MINISTERS GATHER IN ST. LOUIS

Bro. Charles Johnson, Province vocation director, hosted vocation ministers from St. Louis, Dayton, San Antonio and Honolulu for an intensive weekend of discernment, discussion and prayer at the Province office. The group discussed the past, the present and the future of vocations. Among Bro. Charles' questions: What gives us passion? Are we doing the same things from the former provinces, only bigger? How do we turn things up a notch? The group also discussed internal and external communications, Hispanic vocations, discernment retreats, vocation personnel, and conventions. Development Director Lisa Gooding helped facilitate the meeting. Sr. Mary Beth Hefti assisted with facilities and meals.

At the vocation directors' weekend, bottom row, from left, Bro. Aaron Sonnenburg, Sr. Vange Escobar, Sr. Patricia Knopp, Bro. Charles Johnson, Bro. Jim Wisecaver and Lisa Gooding; on staircase, from top, Novice Dennis Bautista, Bros. Dennis Schmitz, Brian Halderman, Tom Pieper, Charlie Wanda and Mike Sullivan and Fr. John McEnhill

Novice Dennis Bautista coordinated evening prayer for the vocation directors' weekend and used a football theme to discuss vocation ministry. He said the ministry was similar to making downs in a football game, which is a slow but steady "forward progress." Each vocation minister lit a candle and placed it between the "goalposts." Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati introduced a "house system" this fall to strengthen its Marianist vision of education. Students belong to one of five "houses," which provide adult and peer mentoring and community-building activities. House names are based on the school’s Marianist heritage, including Bro. Larry Eveslage, Our Lady of the Pillar, Zaragoza and Bro. Miguel Angel Quiroga. A story in the Oct. 23, 2005, issue of the Cincinnati Enquirer praised the house system. Bro. Ron Luksic, dean of pastoral care, was quoted: “No student falls through the cracks. No student wanders around and doesn’t get involved or goes unnoticed.”
