CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES 50 YEARS


Chaminade University of Honolulu celebrated its 50th anniversary last weekend, with more than 700 on campus attending the official kickoff on Sept. 17. Congratulations to all who have made Chaminade such a special place. See story below.

 

 

BRO. SEAN DOWNING TO PROFESS PERPETUAL VOWS

Bro. Sean Downing, 37, will profess perpetual vows in the Society of Mary at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at Immaculate Conception chapel at the University of Dayton. Fr. Jim Fitz will preside at the Eucharist, Bro. Stephen Glodek will accept the vows, and Fr. Paul Marshall will give the homily. The vow ceremony will be followed by a reception and dinner.

Bro. Sean professed first vows May 18, 2002. He teaches religion at Chaminade-Julienne High School. Fr. Paul invites all members of the Province to an open house for Bro. Sean at the Stonemill/Kiefaber community on Friday, Sept. 30, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fr. Paul reports that overnight accommodations for Province members on Saturday night only can be made with Patti O'Grady at Bergamo Center at 937.426.2363, ext. 239. No rooms are available at Bergamo on Friday night. Our prayers are with Bro. Sean.

 

DISTRICT OF MEXICO CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY

The District of Mexico celebrated its 25th anniversary on Sept. 10-11, 2005, in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. Fr. Cris Janson and Bros. Jerry Sullivan and Bob Wood arrived in Coatzacoalcos in September 1980 with the goal of increasing vocations. Festivities included a Mass on Sept. 10 celebrated by Fr. Cris and Fr. Santiago Leal, pastor of Sacred Heart Church (the District's first mission), followed by dinner. On Sept. 11, local lay Marianists sponsored an evening Eucharist and dinner at Taller San Jose Obrero (the District's second mission). More than 100 attended the festivities, which included speeches by Bros. Jerry, Bob and Roberto Rapp, who has served the District for about 25 years.

PROVINCE MEMBERS ENCOURAGED TO READ DOCUMENTS

Fr. Jim Fitz encourages Province members to read several documents that will be discussed at the Provincial Chapter in San Antonio from Sept. 23 - 25, 2005. These documents can be discussed in community meetings as well as during future visitations by the Provincial Council. The three documents are: (1) “A Work in Progress” - the report of the Provincial Council to the September Chapter; (2) a report on the future structure of the Provincial Council; and, (3) a report on the study of the future of parish ministry in the Province. The documents also are available on the PORTAL at www.marianist.com/portal.

 

RETREAT COMMISSION MEETS IN BALTIMORE


The National Marianist Retreat Commission met in Baltimore Sept. 16-19 at the Roland Avenue community to plan the 2006 and 2007 summer retreats. The commission members attended Sunday Eucharist at St. Joseph Catholic community in Eldersburg, Md., and joined the community for dinner. Members are Fr. Rudy Vela (chair), Bros. FIVE MEN BEGIN NOVITIATE IN EASTERN AFRICA

On Sept. 11, 2005, five young men made their promises and began their two-year novitiate formation in Limuru, Kenya. Our best wishes to Innocent Chikwanda, Joseph Kimani Kamotho, John Darius Mulenga, George Opala and George Sakala. Fr. Mike Nartker presided at the Eucharist and Bro. Steve Grazulis received the promises of the new novices. Fr. Martin Solma was the homilist. The group completed the Aspirancy Program under Bro. Joseph Maria Mwaura and Bro. Patrick Kagai. They will now begin novitiate formation under the directorship of Bro. Steve and Fr. Mike. We pray for God's generous blessings upon all of them.

PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fr. Jim Tobin has been appointed director of the Our Lady of the Pillar community in St. Louis for a first term of three years, effective Aug. 15, 2005. The Provincial Council thanks Fr. Don Cahill for his service as director at Our Lady of the Pillar parish.

Bro. Brian Zampier has been appointed director of the new Marybrook community in St. Louis for a first term of three years, effective Aug. 15, 2005.

Bro. Mike Murphy has been assigned to the Findlay Street community in Cincinnati, with ministry at St. Francis de Sales grade school.

GLASS PANELS AT UD HONOR CHAMINADE, MARTYRS


Bro. Charles Wanda created these five-foot glass panels, which depict Blessed William Joseph Chaminade (left) and the four Marianist martyrs. The Alumni Hall community in Dayton donated the new artwork, which hangs in the main lobby of the University of Dayton's Marianist Hall. The panels were blessed on Sept. 18, the feast day of the martyrs.

 

CIRCULAR FROM GA DISCUSSES SENIOR MARIANISTS

Superior General Fr. David Fleming has written Circular No. 14, “To All Religious Marianist Over the Age of 70,” dated Sept. 12, 2005. Fr. Fleming states, “I am writing to emphasize that the vocation to be a ‘missionary of Mary’ is a project for a lifetime, something that continues bringing rich results at any age, not a task from which we retired at some stated age." CHAMINADE 50TH ANNIVERSARY BEGINS WITH EUCHARIST

Students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends gathered at Chaminade University of Honolulu on Sept. 17, 2005, to celebrate the kickoff of the university’s 50th anniversary. A Mass of Thanksgiving at Mamiya Theatre was “standing room only,” followed by a large reception. The Mass included a 200-member processional. The celebration continues through September 2006 with a speaker series, alumni weekend, a fun run, and other activities. More photos in the next issue of FamilyOnline.

Marianist Sharing Fund in Action
COMMUNITY SCHOOL OFFERS HOPE IN BALTIMORE

The Community School was established in 1982 by residents of the Remington community in Baltimore City to support youth who suffer from a poor educational system, a high dropout rate and conditions of poverty and danger. Bro. Frank O’Donnell and the Baltimore Marianist community have been a presence in this neighborhood school since its inception. Bro. Frank organized an advisory board and has helped expand school services through the Marianist Sharing Fund. Justin Switzer, 2005 class valedictorian, said at graduation: “I plan to succeed where others have failed, live where others have died, and give where others have taken. I plan to assure that my life will be great . . .”

 

UPDATE: MADELEINE HOUSE MARIANIST COMMUNITY

Bro. Paul Galantowicz, Bro. Tom Heinle, Elizabeth Cooke (volunteer with the Marianist Volunteer Program) and Lay Marianist Beverly Barre are in Houston. Lay Marianists Kevin and Brenda Fitzpatrick and their children are in Indianapolis. Bro. Tom is working with St. Vincent de Paul; Elizabeth is working for Catholic Charities; and Paul and Beverly are working with Red Cross. All four are staying with Bro. Jim Barrette, 6409 Brookside Drive, Houston, TX 77023. Several members of the Madeleine House community will try to return to New Orleans later this week to assess the situation with the Madeleine House. The Province sends prayers, best wishes and blessings to this intrepid group, and all others who suffer from this disaster.

 

TOPSAIL SUMMER FAMILY RETREATS

Ed DeBerri, director of the Christian Family Living Center in North Topsail Beach, N.C., reports that the center sponsored 11 family retreat weeks this summer, with approximately 100 families attending (almost 500 people) from 15 states and two foreign countries. During the week-long retreats, families prayed together, worked together and played together. Frs. Rich Kuhn and Al McMenamy and Bros. Ray McQuade and Tobias Ferrer helped staff the retreats. (Note: Ed reports that the center sustained minor damage from Hurricane Ophelia.)

Hugh Bihl, Larry Cada, Callistus Jeje and Tim Phillips attended the fifth biennial conference on the French School of Spirituality at Christ the King seminary in East Aurora, N.Y., entitled "Living Signs of Christ Jesus: Sacramental and Liturgical Aspects of the French School of Spirituality - Lessons for the Present Age." Bro. Tim presented a session on Blessed William Joseph Chaminade.

Congratulations to Teri Rizvi, associate vice president for public relations at the University of Dayton, whose editorial about visiting family in Pakistan appeared in the Sept. 14 issue of USA Today. Read the article.

Congratulations to Fr. Joe Tarrillion, who renewed his commitment as president of Central Catholic High School in San Antonio during a Mass on Sept. 14 in the school's gym. This is his fifth three-year term as school president. Under Fr. Joe's leadership, the school completed a capital campaign that raised $3.6 million to fund scholarships and campus improvements. This year's freshman class of 150 is one of the largest in recent years.

Congratulations to new FMI pre-novice Sr. Nicole Trahan, who was received Sept. 5 in San Antonio. Sr. Nicole, a Texas native, received her bachelor's degree from Texas A&M and her master's from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, where she now works.

CINCINNATI ENQUIRER STORY FEATURES PURCELL MARIAN

A story in the Aug. 28, 2005, issue of the Cincinnati Enquirer about Purcell Marian High School included quotes from the school's principal, Al Early, and Bro. Joe Kamis, superintendent of Catholic schools. The article highlights efforts to revitalize Purcell Marian by increasing enrollment and improving perceptions about the inner-city school. Because it is one of Cincinnati's most ethnically balanced schools, parents, neighborhood officials, and school administrators are hopeful that Purcell Marian can maintain a meaningful presence in the community. MARIANIST FAMILY AT WORLD YOUTH DAY

Bro. Jack Ventura (Lindell Boulevard, St. Louis) led a Province-sponsored group of more than 35 Marianist family members from Aug. 16 - 21, 2005, to World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany. Participants included aspirants Tom Farnsworth and Luis Gamboa; contacts Robert Bowie, Jacob Friesenhahn, Chris Nieport and Ken Barrett; brothers from Korea and Kenya; and teachers, students and chaperones from St. John Vianney High School and Chaminade College Preparatory in St. Louis, Emmanuel parish in Dayton, and St. Louis School in Honolulu. Highlights included meeting the pope and celebrating a Marianist-sponsored Eucharist at a local parish. Fr. David Fleming, superior general, presided at the Eucharist, which was attended by more than 400 people.

It’s Fr. Ralph Siefert, who now lives in the Marybrook community in St. Louis. He is president of Chaminade College Preparatory School. Fr. Ralph’s life lesson: “Life’s not easy, but our vocation makes it very rich and worthwhile. Our response to God’s call is to do what we do as fully as we can, and with as much enthusiasm as possible!”

 

PEACE & JUSTICE TRIP TO KOREA, JAPAN
