PROFESSION OF VOWS IN QUERÉTARO, MEXICO

Congratulations to two brothers from the District of Mexico who professed vows on Aug. 6, 2005, at Our Lady of Guadalupe church in Querétaro, Mexico: Bro. Régulo García Hernández, 42, who professed perpetual vows, and Bro. Gobi Torres Nazarío, who professed first vows. Provincial Stephen Glodek accepted the vows; Fr. Miguel Barber presided at Eucharist. Fr. Quentin Hakenewerth gave the homily, and District Superior Bro. Roberto Hanss gave the Rule of Life and Marianist cross to Bro. Gobi. A fiesta followed with more than 200 in attendance. Bro. Régulo will become director of the community and assistant director of formation at Querétaro; Bro. Gobi will study at the scholasticate in Puebla.

RENEWAL OF TEMPORARY VOWS

Congratulations to Bros. Tobias Ferrer, Brian Halderman and Aaron Sonnenburg who renewed their temporary vows at their annual retreat. Tobias made the retreat in Hawai’i. Brian made his retreat in San Antonio and Aaron made the Eureka retreat. We pray they continue to grow into Marianist life.

 

MARIANIST LIFE CAMP, TEXAS: PRAYER, FRIENDS, FUN


Three Marianist LIFE camps were held in July: Marianist LIFE - Pacific at Mission Spring, Calif.; Marianist LIFE - Central in Dayton; and Marianist LIFE - South in Ingram, Texas. The photo above was taken at the Texas camp. Marianist LIFE National Coordinator Brian Reavey reports that the camps were successful and lots of fun. A full report will appear in a future issue of

PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fr. Vince Plassenthal is retiring to the Colego San José community in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Fr. Ray Middendorf is retiring to the Lincoln Street community in Hollywood, Fla.

Bro. Howard Hughes has been appointed director of the Roland Avenue community in Baltimore for a third term of three years, effective Aug. 15, 2005.

Mike McDermott (Honolulu) has decided not to renew his temporary vows and has withdrawn from the Society. We thank Mike for his contributions and pray that God continues to use Mike’s gifts to build the reign of God.

 

SUMMERTIME IS FOR FAMILIES AT CAPE MAY

Marianist brothers brought a sense of fun to the 2005 Summer Family Retreats at the Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May Point, N.J. UNIVERSITY UPDATE

Chaminade University of Honolulu is proud of its new student center in Freitas Hall, named after benefactors Vi and Paul Loo. The center has a large plasma screen television, pool table, DVD/CD players, Internet connection ports and wireless connection access.

St. Mary's University ranked highly in the U.S. News and World Report's 2006 edition of "America's Best Colleges." It ranked No. 3 for best value among colleges and universities that offer a full range of undergraduate and master's level programs in the Western part of the nation.

The University of Dayton boasts its largest first-year class since 1969, with about 2,000 first-year students. UD's 6.4 percent increase in applications surpassed the national average. Also, both SAT and ACT test scores are the highest in school history.

Bro. Anthony Sobocinski, 85, who died Aug. 17, 2005, in San Antonio. May he rest in peace. A Mass of Christian Burial for Bro. Anthony was held Aug. 20 at the Marianist Residence chapel with burial at the Marianist cemetery on the campus of St. Mary's University. Fr. John Leies presided and was the homilist. Bro. Anthony was a teacher and librarian, mostly in St. Louis and San Antonio. Read Bro. Anthony's obituary.

Fr. Philip Hoelle, 93, who died Aug. 13, 2005, in Dayton. May he rest in peace. A Mass of Christian Burial for Fr. Philip was held Aug. 20 at Queen of Apostles chapel at Mount St. John in Dayton, with burial at Queen of Heaven cemetery. Fr. George Cerniglia presided; Fr. Bert Buby was homilist. Fr. Philip died the day before the Dayton celebration of his 75th jubilee. He founded the Dakota Center in Dayton, a community services center. Gerry VonderBrink, Dakota board vice president, called him the "patron saint" of the center. Read Fr. Philip's obituary.

Fr. Richard Knuge, 79, who died Aug. 6, 2005, in Dayton. May he rest in peace. A Mass of Christian Burial for Fr. Richard was held Aug. 11 at Queen of Apostles chapel at Mount St. John, with burial at Queen of Heaven cemetery. Fr. George Cerniglia presided. Homilist was Fr. Chris Conlon, and Fr. Jerry Chinchar was master of ceremonies. Bro. Michael O'Grady represented the Province. Read Fr. Richard's obituary.

COMMUNITIES MEET FOR RETREAT IN PELICAN STATE


In early August, the communities of Madeleine House (New Orleans) and Pillar of Faith (Houston) met for their second annual retreat at a state park near Lake Charles, La. Marianist History
A MARIANIST MILESTONE IN PUERTO RICO: AUGUST 18, 1930

On Aug. 18, 1930, Bros. Adolph Eiben, Joseph Mohrhaus and John Sauer of the Cincinnati Province arrived in Puerto Rico to establish the first Marianist community in Ponce. Upon their arrival by boat from New York, they were invited to lunch by Gov. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., son of the former president, and his wife. To commemorate the 75th anniversary, current Governor of Puerto Rico Aníbal Acevedo Vilá and his wife, Luisa Gándara, invited the Marianists who serve at Colegio San José -- Bro. Francisco González (director), Fr. Don Wallace and Bro. Reinaldo Berríos -- to lunch at the governor's palace. The governor is a 1979 graduate of the school, his wife taught science there, and their son currently attends as a freshman.

 

PEACE & JUSTICE UPDATE

Sharing Fund In Action. The late Fr. Phil Hoelle - one of the founders of the Dakota Center in Dayton - encouraged Sharing Fund support for the program. Read more about the Dakota Center and apply for a Sharing Fund grant at the Marianist Web site.

Marianist Social Justice Education Resource. Representatives of Marianist secondary and middle schools from Hawaii to Puerto Rico have developed a list of resources for the school year. The list is at the Marianist Web site.

Action Request. Darfur: On Sept. 8, there will be a rally and petition delivery to the president. To participate, go to the Marianist Web site.

Reading on Global Warming. Sr. Leanne Jablonski, director of the Marianist Environmental Education Center (MEEC) in Dayton, has an article in Catholic Rural Life magazine (V47, No. 2), "Humbly Changing our Lives in Response to Climate Change," which outlines effective choices to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and energy use. WHO'S DOING WHAT

Congratulations to Bro. Charles Cummiskey, Ph.D., chemistry professor at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, who was recognized for 50 years of service during the annual university convocation on Aug. 16. St. Mary's President Dr. Charles Cotrell presented Bro. Charles with a diamond service pin. He retired from full-time duties in 1994 but still teaches in the chemistry department and maintains the undergraduate and graduate course catalogs.

Frs. Jim Fitz and Tim Kenney attended the Conference of Major Superiors of Men (CMSM) assembly held Aug. 3-6 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The theme was "The Religious Life in an Interreligious World." Keynote speakers were Trappist Father Thomas Keating of St. Benedict's Abbey in Colorado and Methodist minister Rev. Bud Heckman, executive director of Religions for Peace USA. More than 150 religious leaders attended the assembly. Fr. George Cerniglia represented the General Administration.

Bro. Joe Scheible (Marcella Road, Cleveland) is profiled in the Aug. 12, 2005, issue of the Catholic Universe Bulletin from the Cleveland Archdiocese. Regarding his devotion to the Boy Scouts (he is Scoutmaster at St. Aloysius-St. Agatha church), Bro. Joe says, “One of the Scouting principles is duty to God. I figure it’s good apostolic work.”

Bro. Tom Spring (Pohaku Community, Honolulu) and Dr. Nani Lee of Chaminade University gathered more than two dozen volunteers to prepare the CUH campus for returning students. The group accumulated hours towards a 50th anniversary project called "50,000 Hyperglorious Service Hours," which celebrates the school's mission of community service.

Bro. Fred Rech (Dublin, Ireland) proudly reports on the new prayer space at St. Laurence College in Dublin, a project he coordinated. Bro. Gerry Mc Auley did the welding, teacher Ted Doherty and Alan Kelly from maintenance did the woodwork, including the altar made of spalted beechwood and the wall made from solid ash. Teacher Angela Joyce and parent Bernie Norris created the stained glass windows.

Fr. John Thompson (Jackson Street, Hollywood, Fla.) led the faculty retreat at Daniel J. Gross Catholic High School on Aug. 15. Fr. John reports, "A good time was had by all, and I experienced gracious hospitality especially from Becky Cleveland, president of Gross."


Bro. Don Neff (Meyer Hall, Dayton) returned to St. Paul's College in Melbourne, Australia, as a special guest to help celebrate the school's 40th anniversary. St. Paul's was founded in 1965 by brothers of the former Pacific Province; the former Cincinnati Province directed the school from 1966-1986

Fr. John A. Leies (Marianist Residence, San Antonio) was featured in the Aug. 5, 2005, issue of Today's Catholic, the San Antonio archdiocesan newspaper. Fr. John said that Catholic school students should be encouraged to be more civil, courteous and respectful. "I do not know how soon or how well we can change our society for the better . . . What better place to begin than in a college or university, where the future leaders of our country are found."
