BROTHERS PROFESS PERPETUAL VOWS

to Bros. A. Arockia Doss, Sanjay Ekka, Dennis Lobo, Rajesh Macwan
and Simon Xalxo, who professed final vows on
Oct. 12, 2004, at St. Mary’s Church, Samlong, Ranchi, India. Fr.
Ignase Arulappen presided at the Eucharist and received the profession
of vows; Bro. Anand Prakash Kujur gave the homily. The
Eucharist was followed by a luncheon at Gyan Deep with about 500 friends,
family and fellow brothers. Bros. A. Arockia and Sanjay
professed first vows May 1, 1998; Bro. Simon professed
first vows May 1, 1999; and Bros. Dennis and Rajesh
professed first vows April 29, 2000.

Il Young Kim will be ordained a priest Nov. 20, 2004, at
Sangok-dong Church, Incheon, Korea. The Most Reverend Boniface
Choi, D.D., bishop of Incheon Diocese, Korea, will be the
ordaining bishop. Fr. Joe Lackner, Province assistant
for developing regions, will be in attendance. Our prayers are with
Bro. Francis on this important day. |
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER AT BERGAMO

In
celebration of the Marianist World Day of Prayer on Oct. 10, approximately
200 people attended Mass at Queen of Apostles Chapel at Mount St.

(Alumni Hall, Dayton).
Edward Gerker, 82, who died Nov. 6, 2004, in St. Louis.
May he rest in peace. Edward was the father of Jim Gerker,
principal at Chaminade College Preparatory (St. Louis).
William Klein, 78, who died July 7, 2004, in Chicago
after a long illness. May he rest in peace. William was a lay Marianist
in Chicago.

Al Cleary III, who is hospitalized, and Vincee Viso,
who is battling cancer. Al and Vincee are friends of the Marianists in
California.
The people of the Ivory Coast, especially the Marianist
religious there, and for an end to the violence. Bro. Charles-Henri
Moulin reports that the Marianist brothers and sisters are safe,
but the situation remains volatile.
For Cpl. Eric Shelvy, USMC, and other military who are
involved with the invasion of Fallujah. We also pray for the Iraqi people.
Cpl. Shelvy is the son of Diane Guerra, Province director
of communications.

VOCATION
DISCERNMENT RETREAT IN BALTIMORE
A vocation discernment
retreat was held Oct. 29-30 at the Roland Ave. community in Baltimore.
Ten retreatants and five religious participated in the event, which was
organized by Bro. Charlie Johnson, Province director
of vocations. Fr. Paul Fitzpatrick gave talks on community,
the theme of the retreat. Participants celebrated Eucharist at St. Joseph's
Parish in Sykesville, Md., and attended the parish's fundraiser for a
school in Peru. Bro. Phil Melcher (Region of Peru) spoke
at the fundraiser.

PURCELL
MARIAN SIGNS SPONSORSHIP AGREEMENT
Representatives of Purcell
Marian High School in Cincinnati renewed the school's dedication to its
Marianist mission by signing a sponsorship agreement on Nov. 1 during
the All Saints Eucharist at St. Francis DeSales Church. Signing for the
Province was Fr. Tim Kenney (Province director of education);
Jan Kennedy (past principal of Purcell Marian) signed
for the school. Jack Kennevan, interim principal of Purcell
Marian, was welcomed at the Eucharist. A reception followed at the school's
Alumni Hall.

& JUSTICE UPDATE: Marianist Volunteer
Service Program; Visiting Communities
Marianist Volunteer
Program Up and Running:
The Marianist Volunteer Program is recruiting volunteers to begin
in August 2005. The program is a one-year domestic commitment and
a two-year international commitment for those 21 and older to live
in community with other volunteers and work at a service site full
time. Sites being explored include Coatzacoalcos, Mexico; St. Louis;
Rockaway Park, N.Y.; Dayton/Cincinnati; and San Antonio. There also
may be summer placements at a retreat center. For more information,

WHO'S DOING WHAT
The late Fr. Joseph Davis of the former Province
of Cincinnati is featured in a new book, "Stamped with the Image
of God: African-Americans as God's Image in Black," written by
Fr. Cyprian Davis, OSB, and Sr. Jamie Phelps,
OP. Prior to his ordination, Fr. Joe was the first director of the
National Office of Black Catholics. He died in Cleveland in 1992 at
the age of 55. |

Bro. Roy McLoughlin (Montgomery Rd., Cincinnati) reports
that the Moeller community hosted a vocation evening on Oct. 25 for eight
seniors from Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati. After Eucharist
and dinner, Bro. Roy and Bros. Howard Lohrey and Ron
Luksic shared their vocation stories, and the brothers answered
students' questions about religious life.

26 students and staff from the Marianist Development Project (MDP)
in Mombasa rolled up their sleeves on Oct. 25 to donate blood to the
Kenya Blood Transfusion Service. |

Bro. Michael Cochran (Kitale, Kenya) is visiting
friends and family between October 2004 and January 2005 while on
"home leave" from his mission work in Africa. Bro. Michael
will visit the communities at Rockaway Park, N.Y., and Washington
St., Dayton, before traveling to St. Louis and Albuquerque to visit
his sister. |
Fr. Jim Schimelpfening (Holy Rosary Parish, San Antonio)
wrote an article, "A Pilgrimage into the Heart of a People: A Charism
Rediscovered," that appeared in the January-March 2004 issue of Ephemerides
Mariologicae, a quarterly devoted to Marian theological
studies. This past summer, Fr. Jim received his doctorate in ministry
from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

Bro. Harold Lootens (Marianist Residence, San Antonio)
invites all to attend his piano concert, "Wide Wide World of
the Piano Repertoire," at 3 p.m. on Nov. 21 at St. Mary's University's
Treadaway Recital Hall. He will play music by Mozart, Chopin, Schubert,
Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. Bro. Harold gave the
same concert on Oct. 24 at the Our Lady of the Pillar Family Center
in St. Louis. |

75th ANNIVERSARY OF MARYHURST CEMETERY

Members
of St. Louis area Marianist communities gathered on Nov. 2, All Souls
Day, at Maryhurst Cemetery in St. Louis (near St.
John Vianney High School) to celebrate its 75th anniversary. After
a prayer service for the brothers buried at the cemetery, participants
enjoyed dinner, which was hosted by the Curé of Ars
community. The cemetery was consecrated March 19, 1929. A
large Calvary group sculpture was erected in the 1930s.

VOCATION DINNER

Fr.
Roland Bunda and Bro. David Betz of the
Newman Center at the University of Santa Cruz in California attended
the 5th annual "Bishop Ryan Vocation Dinner" in Monterey

individuals, many of whom were interested in the priesthood or religious

"DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS" ALTARS
On Día de
los Muertos, Spanish for "Day of the Dead," Mexican and
Central American families joyfully remember their deceased loved ones
and celebrate the continuity of life. As part of the ritual, which is
celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2, observants create altars that feature photos
and mementos of the dead.
