Ed Brink, Province Office of Education, delivered the closing remarks. Other presenters included George Lisjak, director of Marianist Educational Studies and Partnerships, and Sr. Leanne Jablonski of the Marianist Environmental Education Center (MEEC) and MEEC staff. George Lisjak coordinated the event with the support of the Province Office of Education. Educators from the University of Dayton, Chaminade University of Honolulu and St. Mary’s University were involved in planning and presenting at the MEC workshop.

The Province Office of Education also sponsored a “Teaching as Ministry” (TAM) meeting July 6 – 9 at the University of Dayton, with 34 teachers, administrators and staff members from 14 Marianist-sponsored schools in attendance. TAM allows participants to network with other educators, share the good things at their schools, gain insight and perspective on the Characteristics of Marianist Education and commit to making an impact on the Marianist character of their schools. ST. MARY’S RANKS NO. 1 FOR “GIVING BACK TO COUNTRY”

In its September 2010 issue, Washington Monthly magazine ranked St. Mary’s University first in the nation in the category of master’s universities for promoting an ethic of service to country; fostering scientific and humanistic research; and performing as an engine of social mobility. The issue profiles America’s best master’s universities and baccalaureate colleges.

“Institutions like St. Mary’s and our other top-ranked master’s and baccalaureate institutions don’t spend a lot of time and money chasing after fame and glory. They’re too busy serving their students and communities well. In doing so, they have a lot to teach academia about giving back to the country,” says author Erin Dillon, the senior policy analyst at Education Sector, an independent think tank in Washington, D.C. Read the article. Read about the other recent rankings that St. Mary’s has earned.

Bro. Victor (left) with Bill Burke, president and CEO of Day Air Credit Union, and a StretchPay client

In 2000, Bro. Victor Forlani (Washington Street, Dayton) was troubled by predatory payday lending practices. So he challenged students in his management capstone class at University of Dayton’s School of Business Administration and the leaders of local credit unions to devise a long-term solution to help families that live paycheck to paycheck. Ten years later, the resulting StretchPay lending program— developed with the support of the Fitz Center for Leadership (together with the UD School of Business Administration and local credit unions)— is successful and used by 58 credit unions in eight states. This legacy is profiled in a recent issue of Community Leader, the newsletter from the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community.Read the article.

SPOTLIGHT ON 2010 JUBILARIANS

FamilyOnline honors Marianists celebrating a milestone anniversary this year. Each issue will profile jubilarians and pay tribute to their dedication to the Marianist mission.

Bro. Paul Fennelly, 50 years professed

Bro. Paul Fennelly was born and raised in Alameda, Calif.  He professed first vows on Aug. 15, 1960. Prior to retiring in 2002, he served as a secretary, treasurer and business manager for the former Pacific Province, the former Santa Cruz novitiate, the Marianist Mission, and for schools in Ohio and California. Bro. Paul has resided at the Marianist Center in Cupertino since 2002, where he assists the center’s nurse with secretarial work.

Bro. Paul Metzger, 60 years professed

“When I went to the novitiate, I said I didn’t want to be a teacher, but I was told I should be one. The Superiors were right on that thought. I have loved teaching and relating to young people. At 80, I still enjoy working with children. It gives me much meaning, purpose and fulfillment. I believe that relating to my students, as well as my prayer life — especially meditating on the Scriptures — have brought me to a much more personal relationship with Christ.”

Bro. Francis Heyer
, 70 years professed

“At the age of 11, Bro. Francis out-ran three or four others in a backyard race. He came home blue, yellow and green in the face. A doctor visited his home the next day and found Francis’s heart fibrillating. He missed eight weeks of school, and he spent six of those weeks in bed. As he had been attending novena devotions with everyone else in his parish in 1932, during the Great Depression, he attributed his survival to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.” Read more about Bro. Francis.

Fr.
Adolf Windisch, 50 years ordained

Fr. Adolf was born and raised in St. Louis. He professed first vows on Aug. 15, 1949, in Galesville, Wis. He was ordained on July 17, 1960, in Fribourg, Switzerland. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Fribourg. Read more about Fr. Adolf

FROM THE SCHOOLS . . .

THE UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON and Groupo SM, one of the largest international publishers of educational materials in the Spanish-speaking world, have collaborated to create an internship program. Groupo wanted to enter the growing English teaching market, and UD was interested in the unique opportunities produced by the collaboration. “It’s a strategic alliance of sorts but in a very specific way because we both have this Marianist family connection,” says Amy Anderson of UD’s Center for International Programs. Read an article about the program that appeared in Cincinnati’s The Catholic Telegraph.
