Bro. Dennis Schmitz (left) and Fr. George Cerniglia (right) with Novices Norman Capinpin, Nhan Nguyen, Brandon Paluch, Hugo Bastida and Andrew Caruso

On Aug. 13, Novices Hugo Bastida, Norman Capinpin, Andrew Caruso, Nhan Nguyen and Brandon Paluch were admitted into the Marianist Novitiate at an evening prayer service at the Novitiate in Dayton. (Novice Michael Chiuri has been delayed in his entrance to the Novitiate due to immigration issues.) Fr. Mike Lisbeth, director of novices, presided at the Rite of Reception. The community also celebrated the life of Blessed Jakob Gapp, SM, who was martyred by guillotine on Aug. 13, 1943, for speaking out against Nazi propaganda. Prior to the prayer service, the novices completed a six-day commitment retreat at the Jesuit Spiritual Center in Milford, Ohio. The retreat’s theme was “Availability to God, Mary, Others, Ourselves and Mission.” Fr. George Cerniglia and Bro. Dennis Schmitz facilitated the retreat. Read Fr. Mike’s homily.

The Mystical Rose Oratory

Bishop Larry Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu (center) with Provincial Marty Solma and Fr. Bill Meyer, assistant for religious life; Julie Nagasako, David Moyer and Isabella Moyer, president of the International Organization of Marianist Lay Communities; Kay Stone and AJ Wagner, president of the MLNNA; and Maureen O'Rourke, Cynthia Kaderli and Novice Norman Capinpin

Members of the Marianist Lay Network of North America (MLNNA) gathered for the organization’s eighth Continental Assembly from July 22 - 25 on the campus of Chaminade University of Honolulu. Approximately 134 Lay Marianists—including 15 Lay Marianists from South Korea—and 16 religious attended. Jeannie Pinpin, Pi`ikea Hardy-Kahaleoumi and Kay Stone served as event chairs. The Marianist Social Justice Collaborative (MSJC) and the Marianist State Community held their annual meetings and retreats in conjunction with the assembly. Read Fr. Bill Meyer’s homily at the July 25 Eucharist.

The agenda included time for workshops on social justice, prayer and networking and emphasized the indigenous culture of Hawai’i. The workshops featured members of three organizations in particular: the MSJC, the Marianist Lay Formation Initiative and the International Organization of Marianist Lay Communities.

The assembly, held every three years, began in 1988 in St. Louis. Organizers decided to hold the conference in Hawai’i this year to honor the area’s robust lay movement.

The event chairs thank the assembly participants, Chaminade University of Honolulu, the Marianist Center of Hawai’i, and the Hale Malia and Marianist Hall communities for their support. Additional photos from the Assembly will appear in the next issue of FamilyOnline.

Participants gathered from across the country—and Hawai’i, Puerto Rico and Ireland—for a week of workshops and experiences in leadership development, prayer, the sacraments, community building and social justice.

In total, 217 high school students, 104 adults and 32 schools and parishes participated. “After the programs conclude, participants return to their local LIFE communities to continue our Marianist founders’ vision of ‘creating a community of communities to change the world,’” says Brian Reavey, national coordinator for Marianist LIFE.

But until this week I have not fully acquired it. The Baptismal renewal, the reconciliation, the Eucharist, the prayers, and the community have allowed me to walk with Christ in this summer of warmth.” Read Alexandria’s entire reflection.

Marianist LIFE celebrates its 40th anniversary throughout this academic year. Two celebrations are scheduled for 2011:

When Bro. Jim Wisecaver (West Hills, Calif.) learned that Aspirant Alejo Perez of Ventura, Calif., was hesitant to join a religious order his family didn’t know, he invited Alejo’s parents to meet with fellow West Hills, Calif., community members. But when Alejo explained that—as is custom in his culture—his entire family needed to be included, Bro. Jim opened the invitation to include Alejo’s parents, two sisters, an uncle, a brother-in-law and two nephews!

On July 25, the Perez family met with the West Hills community—and Bro. Ray Dominguez, who was visiting with his parents and brother. Sr. Evangeline Escobar, West Hills houseguest, also attended. The community and its guests gathered for liturgy, a meal and socializing. Bro. Jim says, “Not only do we now have a new member of the Marianist Family in Alejo, but the Perez and Marianist families are beginning a new adventure—together!”

Southern California Public Radio profiled University of Dayton graduate and Chaminade Middle School religion teacher Joe Melendrez on Aug. 9. Joe writes and performs original rap music that encourages young people to pray. “New times call for new methods, of ministry especially… And I felt that by using music as a vehicle of promoting prayer, we can enhance the prayer lives of students, of young people, of older people, of whoever and just hopefully make a movement of prayer,” Melendrez says. Read and listen to the story.

Joe Melendrez raps prayers at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress in Anaheim, Calif. His audience repeats after him, “Stand up, everybody with passion. Stand up, everybody take action. Stand up, for what you believe in. Our God is good and he's never leavin'.”

Fr. Joe Lackner

“My students and others to whom I have ministered have enriched my life more than I believe I have enriched them. It is all grace and gift, as Bernanos wrote, even when I have not recognized it.” Read more from Fr. Joe.
