FR. JIM FITZ NAMED RECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON

Fr. Jim Fitz

Fr. Jim Fitz, assistant provincial, has been named rector at the University of Dayton. In his new role, the University of Dayton alumnus will focus his efforts on sustaining and strengthening the University's strong Catholic and Marianist character. The rector's position is a joint appointment between the president and the provincial. Fr. Joe Kozar, associate professor of religious studies at UD, has been named assistant rector, a new position. Fr. Joe, a faculty member for 25 years, will serve as a liaison between the offices of the rector and provost, focusing on faculty initiatives.

Fr. Joe Kozar

Fr. Jim, 63, will succeed Fr. Paul Marshall, who has been named assistant for temporalities for the U.S. Province. “The University of Dayton's identity as a Catholic, Marianist university is a gift to the Church and to the world," said Fr. Jim, who serves on the executive committee of the university's board of trustees. "Fr. Joe and I will work to find creative ways to strengthen the Marianist religious faculty and staff while developing even greater lay leadership to advance the Marianist tradition of education."

Provincial Stephen Glodek and Daniel J. Curran, UD president, say Fitz is an excellent fit for the rector's position. "I am sure that Fr. Jim will bring to his new ministry at the University of Dayton the same deep faith, hard work, dedication and deep love of the Marianist mission to educate young people that was evidenced in his excellent work as assistant provincial of the Province of the United States," Glodek said. Curran praised Fitz for his strong administrative skills and devotion to the university's mission.

"He believes passionately in the Marianist mission of educating students to make a real difference in their communities, their professions — and the world," Curran said. "I look forward to working with Fr. Jim, Fr. Joe and the campus community in strengthening our shared commitment to the university's religious heritage."  Our best wishes to Fr. Jim and Fr. Joe in their new positions. Read more about Fr. Jim.

SPOTLIGHT ON 2010 JUBILARIANS

FamilyOnline honors Marianists celebrating a milestone anniversary this year. Each issue will profile jubilarians and pay tribute to their dedication to the Marianist mission.

Fr. Cris Janson
, 50 years professed

“At heart I am a teacher. As pastor, I fulfill that passion especially in writing a weekly bulletin message. Marianist educators also are ordained. I accepted the invitation in the novitiate to consider ordination. I never lost the desire to learn, and at present I am in a program for spiritual direction certification. Community life has and continues to call forth from me unknown gifts.”

Fr. Francis Kenney
, 70 years professed

“In the novitiate, I was the bell ringer and had a special job of gathering every day the accounts of all the novices’ daily meditations.  My first teaching assignment was at Most Holy Trinity High School in Brooklyn, where I was told by one Brooklyn-accented person that I talked funny.  I always liked sports.  I was the athletic director at Most Holy Trinity.” Read more from Fr. Francis.

FROM THE SCHOOLS . . .

ARCHBISHOP RIORDAN HIGH SCHOOL. Patrick Daly has been named president of Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. Mr. Daly has served as president of St. Bernard’s Catholic School in Eureka, Calif., for the past 10 years. He is a native of San Francisco and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1983. “I’m excited about carrying on the mission of the Marianists at Archbishop Riordan High School,” said Daly. Thank you to Bro. Bill Bolts and Fr. John Thompson for serving on the search committee, which was coordinated by the Archdiocese of San Francisco. We send our prayers and best wishes to Mr. Daly and also to Fr. Tom French, who has served Archbishop Riordan so ably for 12 years.

ST. JOHN VIANNEY HIGH SCHOOL. Two students and a parent received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation at the Easter Vigil Mass at Vianney following preparation through the school’s campus ministry department. Senior Carl Gottlieb, junior José Benitez and parent Mark Smith Jr. chose to pursue instruction through Fr. Tim Kenney (school chaplain), Fr. Don Cahill and Mary Kay Fitzpatrick, director of campus ministry. “All three candidates worked with us throughout the season of Lent to prepare to receive the sacraments,” said Fr. Tim. “It was truly an awesome event that made Easter extra special at Vianney.”

Eugenio Colón, Rafael González and Josué Layuno

COLEGIO SAN JOSÉ students Eugenio Colón, Josué Layuno and Rafael González used their twelfth birthday party as an opportunity to give rather than receive. The trio requested guests to make a donation to the Marianists in Haiti instead of buying gifts. They raised $700. The boys said the experience made them grateful for all they have and can share and also taught them how to be true Marianists because they acted on what they were taught at CSJ.

SAINT LOUIS SCHOOL, HONOLULU.
Six juniors gave up their spring break to participate in a service-learning trip to New York City. The service activities included serving meals and tutoring immigrant children in Harlem, serving breakfast at the Catholic Worker House, and working at Sure We Can, a can redemption center that services the inner-city poor.  The social justice activities included attending briefings at the UN and participating in an international video conference on the rebuilding of Haiti. “This was the best experience of my life,” remarked junior Kala McShane.

NOLAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL. More than 70 ceramic bowls handcrafted by Nolan Catholic art students were on display at “An Artful Luncheon to End Hunger,” Tarrant Area Food Bank’s Empty Bowls event. For the price of admission, participants at the event selected a hand-crafted bowl from among 2,000 created or painted by professional, recreational and student artisans. Nolan Catholic art students have been donating bowls to the event for the last four years.

I REMEMBER AFRICA”

Bro. Charles Gausling, far left, early years in Eastern Africa
On May 23, 2010, the Marianists will celebrate the inauguration of the Region of Eastern Africa. Since 1957, more than 100 U.S. Marianists have worked in Eastern Africa supporting ministries and mentoring Africans in faith formation. To pay tribute to those who worked to foster the work of the gospel and lay the groundwork for its new African leadership, ALIVE magazine is soliciting written commentaries (a 75- to 100-word reflection) from anyone who served in Kenya, Zambia, Malawi and other parts of Africa during the past 53 years.  Find out more. Please submit your reflection and photo(s) to Ann Mueller, Communications Office Assistant, at amueller@sm-usa.org.

PEACE & JUSTICE UPDATE:

MARIANIST FAMILY MEMBERS HELP BUILD HOUSE IN ST. LOUIS

This past fall, the Marianist Province of the United States – via the Office of Peace and Justice – provided a loan to North Grand Neighborhood Services (NGNS) in St. Louis to use in its city revitalization efforts. Many volunteers worked on the construction of the Solomon 12 house, including members of the University of Dayton and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio alumni, St. Louis Marianist high school faculty and students, Our Lady of the Pillar parish, Marianist Volunteer Program volunteers and Marianist Province staff. On April 18, NGNS hosted a dedication of the Marianist house, representing the culmination of this collaborative effort. Learn more about North Grand Neighborhood Services’ programs. Find out about a volunteer opportunity for the Solomon Project sponsored by the UD Alumni Association.
