SHARING MARIANIST FAMILY SPIRIT AT HOME AND ABROAD

Marianist retreat team, Long Island, N.Y., Jen Lyon, Eric Quinn, Deacon Joe McNicholasMichelle Marshall, Bill Peo (back), Rebecca Quinn (front), Sue Peo, Fr. Tom Cardone (Province of Meribah), John Linge and Mary Linge. Not shown, Pati Krasensky, who took the photo

Suzanne Bishop was in Switzerland and Pati Krasensky, director of the Marianist Lay Formation Initiative, was in New York, but they were together in spirit as they facilitated “sister” Marianist family retreats in Basel and Long Island. Both used the theme “How Does Your Garden Grow” for a one-day Lenten family retreat based on a model used by the Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May Point, N.J.  Even with a six-hour difference, the groups timed it so they could pray for each other during the retreat. Before moving to Switzerland, Suzanne attended Marianist Family retreats at Cape May and was interested in continuing the tradition in Switzerland. She said it was a wonderful day for the families who showed much enthusiasm for the program.

A SUNNY OUTLOOK ON ENERGY EXPENSES AT CAPE MAY

A solar roof being installed on the Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May Point, N.J., will reduce electricity bills and pay for itself in less than seven years. Courtesy of Anthony Fucci

The Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May Point, N.J., is housed in an old Victorian building that has a lot of charm but is very expensive to heat. Luckily it also has a director, Anthony Fucci, with a lot of bright ideas. Anthony devised a plan to use solar panels to reduce energy costs on the retreat center building and the community residence used by the Marianist brothers at Cape May. The cost of the project is $119,000. The state is granting the center a $19,000 rebate and the rest is funded by the center’s endowment. The retreat center did no fundraising for the project because it will generate its own revenue from Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) for the consumer, which are traded on the market. Anthony estimates the entire project will pay for itself in less than seven years. Great work Anthony! Read more from the Cape May Star and Wave newspaper. Courtesy of Bro. Tom Redmond

Bro. Bob Moriarty (Vernon, Conn.) reports that the winter issue of Gatherings, an enrichment resource for small Christian communities published by his office, features an essay by Catherine Nerney, S.S.J. entitled Communion and Community. It offers rich reflection for individuals, community conversation and use in ministerial settings. Read the newsletter.

Bro. John Samaha and Paul Risso have written an article about the late Fr. Emile Neubert entitled “An Educator of Saints: Rev. Emile Neubert, SM.” Fr. Neubert, who died in 1967, was a noted Mariologist. Read the article. Read a book review of the English translation of “Mary and the Priestly Ministry” by Emile Neubert. The translation is the work of Fr. Thomas Stanley, who was a seminarian under the direction of Fr. Neubert many years ago.

RECOMMENDED READING FOR THE LENTEN SEASON

Assistant Provincial Jim Fitz notes that as we celebrate the Lenten season, we are invited to deepen our faith. He recommends two books that were helpful in deepening his faith in the mystery of the Eucharist.

Why Go to Church? The Drama of the Eucharist by Rev. Timothy Radcliffe, former master general of the Dominicans.  In the book Radcliffe reflects on the Eucharist as a drama in three acts:  the liturgy of the word (deepening our faith by listening); the preparation of the gifts and Eucharistic prayer (deepening our hope by remembering); and communion and being sent forth (deepening our love by union with God and others).  The book is published by Continuum.
In Eucharist by Rev. Robert Barron (University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, Ill.), Barron reflects on the meaning of the Eucharist as sacred meal, sacrifice and real presence.  The book is part of the Catholic Spirituality for Adults series published by Orbis Press.
