BRO. BERTRAM’S DIARY AN INTERESTING, ENTERTAINING READ

Certainly one of the most colorful individuals in Marianist history is Bro. Gabriel Bertram Bellinghausen (1849-1933), an administrator, photographer, teacher, violinist, band director and disciplinarian who earned the title “Emperor of the Isles” while in Hawai’i. Bro. Bertram arrived in Honolulu in 1883 with seven other brothers and directed Saint Louis College (now Saint Louis School) for many years. He became a good friend of King Kalākaua I. The story goes that when the king was late for a school program, Bro. Bertram refused to start it again. “Your Majesty, you rule a Kingdom, I run a school; you have laws and we have rules, and must abide by them.” The king was never late after that.

Now Bro. Herb Janson – with the assistance of Bros. Art Cherrier, Earl Leistikow, Leo Willett, Dennis Bautista and Fr. Franz Schorp – has put the diary of Bro. Bertram (written 1883-1905) into a bound edition of more than 300 pages. E-mail Bro. Herb to order your copy; then send a check for $20 (payable to the Marianist Residence, St. Mary’s University) to Bro. Herb Janson, Marianist Residence, St. Mary’s University, 520 Fordham  Ave., San Antonio TX 78228-4821.
