Marianists
in formation attended a program called “Look, Listen and Lounge” July
29 to Aug. 2 at Governor’s Island in Huntsville, Ohio. In addition
to sharing in prayer and recreation, the group heard presentations
and explored religious life with professed brothers. The event was
coordinated by Bro. Andrew Kosmowski with assistance from Bros.
Sean Downing, Jim Eppy, Charles Johnson (national vocation director), George
Kemmett, Lucien Tigga, Charles Wanda and Fr. Chris Wittmann. Also
providing support and hospitality were the Marianists of the Governor’s
Island community, Bros. Paul Bredestege and Bill Deanhofer and Fr.
Jim Russell.

NEW NOVICES ATTEND RETREAT IN OHIO

The Stonemill-Kiefaber
Marianist community recently held its community orientation. Aspirants
Nhan Nguyen and Hugo Bastida were formally
received into the community with the Rite of Acceptance during community
prayer. The aspirants received an audio CD about Mary by Fr.
Bert Buby. In addition, the community blessed and installed Bro.
Ray Fitz as its new director. Our congratulations to Nhan,
Hugo and Bro. Ray! Our best wishes also to Aspirants Norman
Capinpin, Andrew Caruso and Brandon
Paluch, who have begun their aspirancy year at the Casa Maria
community in San Antonio.

PROVINCIAL CHAPTER TO MEET IN SEPTEMBER IN
CALIFORNIA

Provincial
Stephen Glodek has convoked the sixteenth session of the
Provincial Chapter of the Province of the United States. This session
of the Chapter will be held at Vallombrosa Center, Menlo Park,
Calif., from Sept. 11-13, 2009. Members of the Province on
the West Coast will be invited to join the Chapter for evening
prayer and supper on Saturday, Sept. 12, the Solemnity of
the Holy Name of Mary. Details will be sent in the near future.
The main focus of the Chapter will be the strategic planning process
of the Province facilitated by Tony Fitzgerald.
The Chapter will receive updates from the Provincial Council and
reflect on the recent General Leadership Assembly held in Rome.
The agenda and timetable are posted on the Province PORTAL. Because
this is a reflection Chapter, no propositions will be discussed.
MARIANISTS ATTEND CMSM ASSEMBLY IN ST. LOUIS

for education, attended the 53rd annual assembly of the Conference
of Major Superiors of Men in St. Louis Aug. 5 to Aug. 8. The
CMSM supports and offers resources for U.S. leaders of Catholic
men’s religious institutes. Approximately 130 religious
superiors attended the assembly. Archbishop Pietro
Sambi, the Vatican’s Apostolic Nuncio (ambassador)
to the United States, gave the keynote address. Read

Thirteen
Marianist brothers and priests were honored Aug. 15, 2009, at the
Immaculate Conception Chapel at the University of Dayton, for jubilees
that included Fr. Jim McKay, who is celebrating
75 years as a brother, and Fr. Francis Kenney, who
has been a priest for 60 years. Fr. George Cerniglia,
assistant for religious life, presided at the Eucharist, Fr.
Ken Templin served as homilist and Fr. Chris Conlon was
master of ceremonies. Novice Joe Janosik and Aspirant Brandon
Paluch were servers; Sr. Nicole Trahan and Bro.
Tom Wendorf were lectors. Following Mass, a reception and
dinner was held for hundreds of family and friends at the Kennedy
Union, with Bro. Mike O’Grady acting as master
of ceremonies. Congratulations to the jubilarians!

The 5th International Meeting of Marianist Lay Communities was held Aug. 1 to Aug. 7 in Nairobi, Kenya. Delegates from 20 of the 28 countries attended, including six delegates from the U.S. The delegates discussed and approved a document, “The Role of Marianist Lay Communities in the Church and in the World.” The document will be posted on the MLC international Web site. Isabella Moyer (Canada) was elected president. Isabella replaces Tony Garascia, who is stepping down after serving in leadership of the Marianist International Lay Organization for 16 years. In addition, Susan Vogt (U.S.) was elected regional responsible for North America, Asia, Australia and Ireland, Ernest Kasongo (Congo), regional responsible for Africa, Felix Arqueros (Spain), regional responsible for Europe and Isabel Duarte (Chile), regional responsible for Latin America. Our best wishes to the new leadership team!

Fr.
Robert E. Hughes is celebrating 60
years of profession and 50 years of ordination.
He was born and raised in Washington, D.C.
Fr. Robert professed first vows in 1949 at
Beacon, N.Y., and perpetual vows in 1953 at
the University of Dayton. He was ordained in
1959 in Fribourg, Switzerland. Fr. Robert earned
a bachelor’s degree from the University
of Dayton. He has served as a teacher and chaplain
in Southern California. Fr. Robert was the
first director and chaplain of the Newman Center
when it opened in 1965 at the University of
California at Santa Cruz. He currently resides
at the Alumni Hall Marianist Community in Dayton.

Kenneth Sommer is celebrating 50 years
of priesthood. He was born and raised in Dayton.
Fr. Ken professed first vows in 1947 at Beacon,
N.Y., and perpetual vows in 1952 in Dayton.

Gapp, who died a World War II martyr in Berlin on Aug. 13,
1943, at age 46. Fr. Gapp was condemned to death for speaking again

AP chemistry class at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio
averaged 4.462 out of a possible 5 on the national exam. Every
student passed. More than 60 percent of the class got 5’s
and 23 percent got 4’s. Great job Bro. Tim and students! |

UNIVERSITY OF HONOLULU has experienced
a 15 percent increase in first-year students and
a 16 percent increase in transfer students in new
enrollments since last year. Approximately 50 percent
of the new students are from public and private schools
from across the state. “We believe our strong
academic programs have begun to gain increased visibility.
In addition, the current economic climate has led
many Hawai’i students to take a closer look
at what is available here at home,” said Bro.

CENTRAL
CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, beginning its 158th year,
is the oldest high school for boys in Texas. CCHS began
16 years after the battle of the Alamo. Four Marianist
brothers traveled to Texas by stagecoach to bring education
to the tiny settlement called San Antonio de Bejar. The
first school was established in 1852 in an old livery stable
with 12 students. This year, 535 students (grades 9-12)
began the school year with more than 150 students in the

Maui inducted the Society of Mary into its Hall of Fame

ANTHONY STUDENT RECEIVES MARIANIST SCHOLARSHIP. Congratulations
to Desiree
Borges,
a 2009 graduate of St. Anthony Junior/Senior High School
in Maui, who has been awarded “The Marianist Leadership
Scholarship” for the 2009-2010 academic year at
Chaminade University of Honolulu. The scholarship
is offered to students who have earned a minimum grade
point average of 3.0 during high school and have completed
community service.
