CURE IN ST. LOUIS PROMOTES CAUSE FOR CANONIZATION

Rachel and Gabe Lozano in a photo taken when she was named Glamour magazine’s 2008 Woman of the Year. Rachel prayed to Chaminade and survived an incredible battle with a rare form of cancer.
In May 2004, Rachel Baumgartner, 24, was cured of Askin’s sarcoma. Rachel was born in St. Louis in 1983. She is a parishioner of the Marianist parish of Our Lady of the Pillar in St. Louis. At age 15, she began to feel pain in her shoulder. A cancerous tumor was discovered and she received all the medical treatments available. In 2000 she made a pilgrimage to Rome with her parish to assist at the beatification of Fr. Chaminade and to ask his help. The illness continued to advance. Rachel was declared incurable by her doctors in May 2004 and had her last surgery to relieve pain. Her parents, her pastor Fr. Jim Tobin, and the Marianist community and parish prayed to Fr. Chaminade for Rachel’s health. When the doctors examined the extracted tissues, they realized that the cancerous mass was dead. Read more from Via Latina and the St. Louis Post-Disptach.

BRO. BELLINGHAUSEN PHOTOGRAPHS PRESERVED DIGITALLY

Tom Patterson
(far right) discusses the Bellinghausen photo project with Marianist Archives (Ohio) staff members Fr. Paul Vieson, director, Jennifer Gerth and Kimberly Neuenschwander. Missing is staff member Bro. Louis Fournier

From his 1883 arrival in Hawai’i to his 1905 departure, Bro. Gabriel Bellinghausen took many photographs of pioneer Hawai’i, its flora, fauna, missionaries, churches, early Honolulu, Marianist religious and schools and the Hawaiian Royal family. Over 1,200 glass plate negatives from the former Pacific Province Archives form an important part of the United States Province Archives at the University of Dayton. A generous donor enabled Chaminade University of Honolulu to finance the scanning and creation of high resolution digital images of each plate. The five-month conservation project was conducted by Tom Patterson of Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton. On May 21, Tom presented the completed project to the Marianist Archives staff at UD. Another set will be sent to CUH. An exhibit of Bro. Bellinghausen’s photos is currently on display at the Hilo Museum in Honolulu. Read more.
