NOVICES MAKE FIRST PROFESSION IN RANCHI, INDIA

Three novices professed first vows in the Society of Mary on April 30 at the Nirmal Deep novitiate in Ranchi, India. The new brothers are Pratap Guria, Arockiyasamy P. Prince and Anthony S. Santhosh. Fr. Ignase Arulappen (novice director) was the main celebrant at the Eucharist. Bro. Prakash Kujur (assistant district superior) gave the homily and presented the Rule of Life and Fr. Pragasam T. (district superior) received the vows. Marianist brothers, sisters and lay Marianist community members attended the celebration. Congratulations to all!

 

FIRST VOW CEREMONY TO BE CELEBRATED IN DAYTON

On May 23, Novices Rayler Dominguez and Brandon Alana Maugaotega will profess first vows in the Society of Mary. The Eucharistic celebration will be at 4 p.m. at Queen of Apostles Chapel at Mount Saint John in Dayton. Assistant Provincial Fr. Jim Fitz will preside at the Eucharist. Receiving the vows will be Provincial Stephen Glodek. Fr. Mike Lisbeth will give the homily. A reception will follow at Bergamo Center.

Ray, 31, was born in Los Angeles and has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and English and a minor in Spanish literature from St. John’s Seminary College in Camarillo, Calif. He taught and was religion department chair at Chaminade College Preparatory in West Hills, Calif. Ray also served as the national director of faith formation for the Foundation of Prevention and Rescue, which assists families with gang, drug and alcohol issues. Earlier this year, Ray was a member of the Marianist community at Rockaway Park, N.Y., serving both as a guidance counselor at St. John’s Residence for Boys and with Marianist International, an NGO to the United Nations.

Brandon, 26, was born in Honolulu and has a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from Chaminade University of Honolulu. He was employed as a campus minister for retreats at Chaminade University. As an aspirant, he served in university ministry at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. As a first year novice, he ministered in the Office of the Rector assisting with the formation of students interested in becoming lay Marianists. Earlier this year, Brandon served with the Marianist community in Cape May Point, N.J., at the Marianist Family Retreat Center. Our best wishes to Ray and Brandon!

 

 

MCGRATH NAMED DIR. OF ASSOC. OF MARIANIST UNIVERSITIES

Dr. Charles Cotrell, Ph.D., president of St. Mary’s University and chairperson of the Association of Marianist Universities (AMU) announced that Fr. John A. McGrath, S.M., Ph.D. will become the new executive director of the association starting on Jan. 1, 2010. “We are extremely fortunate to have someone with Fr. Jack’s academic background and leadership experience within the Society of Mary to take on the leadership of the Association at this time,” commented Dr. Cotrell. Fr. Jack served in various leadership positions within the Society of Mary, including as provincial of the New York Province from 1977 to 1985, and has been a member of the Religious Studies Department at the University of Dayton since 1987. He has the doctorandus degree in systematic theology from the Catholic University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, and a doctoral degree in historical theology from University of St. Michael’s College, Toronto. Father Jack stated, "I am very glad to have this special opportunity to help deepen our commitment to the Catholic and Marianist mission of the universities and to assist at their greater collaboration." He will replace Bro. Ray Fitz, the first executive director of the AMU, who will continue full time as the Fr. Ferree Professor of Social Justice at the University of Dayton.

 

OHIO HIGH SCHOOLS HONOR THEIR MARIANIST HERITAGE

On April 23, Purcell Marian High School in Cincinnati hosted the Third Annual Marianist Heritage Celebration for the Cincinnati-Dayton area high schools. Educators, administrators and board members representing Chaminade Julienne, Archbishop Moeller and Purcell Marian High Schools gathered for prayer, dinner and fellowship to celebrate their shared heritage of Marianist education. This year's theme was "We are all missionaries." The DeSales Crossings and Archbishop Moeller Marianist communities also joined in the festivities. Each school's Mission Integration Team gave a Marianist Heritage Award to a person from their school who represented the Chaminade missionary spirit. Awards were given to Molly Bardine (CJ), Rick Bohne (Moeller) and Bro. Bob Politi (PM). Shannon Lively (PM MUSP director) and student Elise Riston performed a praise dance at the prayer service for the group. The event was organized by the Mission Integration Team at Purcell Marian. Bro. Bob Politi is co-chair of the team.

Five jubilarians were honored April 25 at a Eucharist and reception at Our Lady of the Pillar parish in St. Louis. Celebrating 60 years of religious profession were Frs. Don Cahill, Richard Loehrlein and James Kunes and Bros. Richard Dix and Leo Slay. In addition, Fr. Bill Wightman celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination. Fr. Jim Fitz, assistant provincial, served as the main celebrant. He was assisted by Fr. Wightman and Fr. Jim Tobin, pastor of Our Lady of the Pillar. Fr. Tim Kenney was the master of ceremonies and Fr. George Cerniglia gave the homily. St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, uncle of honoree Bro. Leo Slay, served as one of the readers. Congratulations to the jubilarians!

On April 24, the Diocese of Honolulu held its annual celebration to honor religious and clergy jubilarians serving in the diocese. The Marianists were represented by golden jubilarians Fr. Ken Templin and Bros. John Campbell, Frank "Paco" Gomes and Jim Vorndran. Eleven brothers celebrated jubilees May 2 at a Eucharist at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel on the campus of St. Mary’s University. Fr. Jim Fitz was the main celebrant and Fr. GRADUATES HONORED IN NAIROBI, KENYA

On May 2, two Marianist brothers received diplomas in education during the 13th graduation ceremony at Christ the Teacher Institute (CTIE) at Tangaza College in Nairobi. Bro. Samuel Kyalo Masivu (English) and Bro. Nyansimora Peter Asimundi (geography) completed the three-year course of study in both Christian Religious Education (CRE) and in their area of specialization.

Bro. Daniel Wang'ombe will receive a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the Consolata Institute of Philosophy during the May graduation ceremony at that school. Daniel also holds a bachelor’s degree in social ministry from Tangaza College. The Nairobi communities gathered May 3 at the Bro. Vincent House (Marianist scholasticate) to celebrate Eucharist on the World Day of Prayer for Vocations and to congratulate the graduates on their achievements.

A full house at Reinbolt Theatre on the campus of St. Mary's University in San Antonio watched the April 22 premiere of "Caldo, Caldo, Caldo," an opera composed by Bro. Mike Sullivan. The opera is based on a children's book written by English professor Diane Gonzales Bertrand with additional text provided by Aspirant Brian Myers, Leo Benavides, Amanda Magana and Anne Packer. Congratulations Bro. Mike!

 

WHO'S DOING WHAT. . .

 Bro. Jack Ventura, Office of Religious Life, Carol Ramey, director of NACMS, and Isabella Moyer, Lay Marianist, spoke last fall at Chaminade University of Honolulu as part of the Mackey Marianist Lecture series. The lecture was entitled “Catholicism in Prophetic Dialogue: A Marian Model of Church.” Read their talks.


 Fr. Steve Tutas (Cupertino, Calif.) was featured in a KHNL Channel 8 Honolulu television news story about the first graduates of Chaminade College (now Chaminade University of Honolulu). Fr. Steve is the only living founder of CUH. Read more.

 Bro. Charles Johnson’s new weekly vocation newsletter, Vocationotation, is mentioned in the April 30 issue of the University of Dayton Campus Report. Read more.

 Bro. Howard Hughes (Cupertino, Calif.) has published PSALM 103 for assembly, cantor, SATB choir and organ with OCP Publications. There are seven antiphons; the psalm verses have been set for any occasion as called for in the Lectionary. 

 Bro. Bob Donovan (Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati) is featured in an article in the April 30 issue of The Catholic Telegraph. Bro. Bob discusses his work at the Center for Respite Care and the Cincinnati Health Care for the Homeless Program. “I always wanted to be a physician and a priest,” he said. “There’s something about helping people and working with the human body.   Susan Vogt, a lay Marianist, member of the Anawim community, and secretary for MLNNA, has published “10 Tips for Married Couples" in the May 2009 issue of Catholic Update. Read the article.

PEACE & JUSTICE UPDATE:

Marianist Sharing Fund. Baptist Child and Family Services recently received a grant from the Marianist Sharing Fund to support its VISTA program. VISTA is a comprehensive college consultation service for under-represented students that provides guidance and strategic advice on all aspects of the college admissions process. The Casa Maria community in San Antonio endorsed this project.

 New Orleans Immersion Trip. High school students, faculty and parents from Villa Angela-St. Joseph in Cleveland, Archbishop Riordan in San Francisco and Saint Louis School in Honolulu participated in an immersion experience in New Orleans in April. They constructed houses for people displaced by Hurricane Katrina and learned about the causes of the city’s destruction and what is being done to restore it. The participants met with residents and college students who volunteered with AmeriCorps. Myles McCabe (Province director of peace & justice) organized the trip and accompanied the group.

 Climate Change. Members of the House Energy and Environment Subcommittee will be considering climate legislation, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, in the coming week. Write or call your representatives and urge them to act now to strengthen and fund legislation that protects poor and vulnerable people who will bear the worst impacts of climate change. Read more.

 One Way to Care for the Earth. Support a local farmer. Most of the food we eat travels hundreds and sometimes even thousands of miles to reach our grocery stores and markets. Do your part to reduce our dependency on oil and fossil fuels and buy locally from a farmer in your region. Find a farmers market in your area through the Internet or Yellow Pages.

 Marianist Social Justice Collaborative. The Adèle Social Justice Project young adult community in Cleveland gathered at the St. Aloysius parish food distribution center to help pack bags provided to those in need in Glenville, Ohio. They also shared lunch and discussed the upcoming Adèle Social Justice Project retreat weekend June 12 to June 14 in Cleveland. Find out more about the retreat. BLESSED FLORENCIO ARNAIZ, SM, a Marianist martyr of Madrid, was born on May 10, 1909. This Sunday, May 10, marks the centenary of his birth. The occasion is an opportunity to honor him in a special way by informing others of his heroic martyrdom and promoting his cause for canonization. The Marianist community at Colegio Nuestra Senora del Pilar in Madrid has invited Marianists and other religious and laity to visit the monument of the Marianist martyrs of Madrid at the school where they taught. NOLAN CATHOLIC TAKES STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN TENNIS AND GOLF. Congratulations to the Lady Viking tennis team which capped off its season with a win over Houston Duchesne to capture the team state championship. The team is coached by Bro. Al Kuntemeier. ROLLING ALONG AT MATERO BOYS SECONDARY SCHOOL


The PTA at Matero Boys Secondary School in Lusaka, Zambia, recently gave the school a bus it imported from Japan. The school did not have a bus and used a minivan and pickup truck to transport students to events.
