MARIANISTS CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY OF MLC FOUNDATION

Lay Marianists renew their commitment at the MLC Foundation
Day celebration at St. Mary's High School.
More than 100
lay and vowed members of the Marianist Family gathered Jan. 31 at St.
Mary’s High School in St. Louis to celebrate the 208th anniversary
of the foundation of the Bordeaux Sodality. All branches of the Marianist
Family (sisters, brothers and priests, and lay Marianists) trace their
roots to the Sodality. Fr. Jim Fitz presided at Eucharist
and Fr.
Mitch Doyen (president of St. Mary’s High School) concelebrated. Bro.
Jack Ventura gave the reflection. Lay Marianists Kevin
Hacker (St.
Mary’s principal) and Jane Goff (assistant principal)
read the story of the beginnings of the Marianist Family. During Mass
the congregation lit candles and renewed their baptismal vows and recommitted
to the Marianist Family. Dinner followed in the St. Mary’s cafeteria. “This
year’s event was exceptional,” said Bro. Jack Ventura,
of the Office of Religious Life, which coordinated the event. “Having
the Marianist Sisters, members of the General Administration and various
young adults in attendance made it a special evening.” Thanks
to Donna Tucker and the many volunteers who made the
event a success.

On Jan. 24, as part of St. Mary's University
Heritage Week, the Marianist Leadership Program and Service Learning
Center co-sponsored the "Continuing the Heritage Service Day." The
service event began with lunch and a send off to service sites where
students helped with brush pick up, graffiti cleanup, sorting food
and clothing donations, painting, play with children, visiting the
elderly and sick and supporting neighborhood revitalization efforts
across the San Antonio area. Marianist Volunteer Program coordinator Dan
Richter offered
the prayer and St. Mary's graduate and MVP alumnus Robert
Manuel offered a reflection on how St. Mary's University
influenced his decision to volunteer with MVP after he graduated in
2007. Approximately 300 to 400 students as well as Meagan Brorman (St.
Mary's '06, MVP 06-07) and Robert Manuel (MVP
07-08) volunteered more than 1,500 service hours to the community.
