Mario, 28, is from Managua, Nicaragua. His mother María Lourdes Sánchez and nine-year-old nephew Yader Leandro Ruiz Bustos came from Managua to attend the ceremony. Mario studied engineering systems for two years in Managua and philosophy for two years in Mexico City before discerning a call to religious life. He began his prenovitiate program in 2006 and novitiate in 2007 in Santiago de Chile. In January, Mario will begin full-time studies at the Marianist scholastic community in Puebla. “I am happy and grateful for the work God has done in me and thankful to my new Marianist family that has welcomed me with so much love,” Mario said.

Rigoberto, 22, is from the municipality of Aquismon in the state of San Luis Potosi in Mexico. His parents, Juan Morales Enriquez and Adela Hernandez Mendoza, and siblings, Elvia Esther Morales Hernandez and Luis Clemente Morales Hernandez, attended the ceremony. Rigoberto entered the prenovitiate program in Querétaro in 2005. He made his novitiate in 2007 in Santiago de Chile. Rigoberto also will be a full-time student at the Marianist scholasticate community in Puebla in January. Our prayers and best wishes to the new brothers!

(far right) takes part in the SOA march. Photos courtesy of Bro. Brian Halderman

Students and Marianists from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and the University of Dayton attended the School of the Americas Vigil/Protest at the gates of Fort Benning, Ga., Nov. 21 to Nov. 23. The 19th annual vigil, attended by approximately 20,000, marked the anniversary of the assassination of Jesuit community members at the Jesuit University in El Salvador. The only surviving member of that Jesuit community, Fr. Jon Sobrino, S.J., was present for this year’s vigil. The protest calls on congressional leaders to cut funding to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly called the School of the Americas). WHIS is a military school that trains Latin American soldiers. According to Bro. Brian Halderman, who attended the vigil with St. Mary’s students, graduates of WHIS/SOA have been linked to human rights violations throughout Latin America. Learn more about SOA Watch.
