MEC, Bro. John Habjan (assistant director of education), Bro.
Ed Brink (director of education) and George Lisjak (director
of the Marianist Educational Studies
and Partnership) |
The
Province Office of Education hosted nearly 60 administrators,
teachers, and admissions, development and communications staff
at the 22nd annual
MEC (Marianist Education Consortium) workshop July 24 to July
27 at the University of Dayton. The gathering focused on marketing
and marketing
communications. Provincial Stephen Glodek gave the keynote
address on “Marketing the Marianist Project.” Other presenters included Bill
Raddell, a religion
teacher from
Villa Angela-St. Joseph in Cleveland, Jim Adams, president of
Chaminade College Preparatory in West Hills, Calif., Irene
Dickey,
marketing
professor at the University of Dayton, and Diane Guerra, director
of the Marianist Office of Communications in St. Louis. Fr.
Paul Marshall,
rector of the University of Dayton, gave an opening blessing
and presided at Mass on Sunday. “The workshop helped those
most responsible for marketing our schools to focus the central
position of our mission
in their marketing efforts,” said George Lisjak, lead organizer
of the workshop. Bro. Ed Brink, director of education, said the
gathering provided an opportunity for Marianist-sponsored schools
to share ideas
and best practices. “To differentiate our schools from
other choices, we need to become better at telling people about
the Marianist
tradition of education. The workshop was a step in that direction,” he
said.

“IF YOU COME TO A FORK IN THE ROAD TO EGYPT … TAKE
IT”

Yogi Berra |

Fr.
Richard |
When
Fr. Richard O’Shaughnessy (Marianist Residence, San
Antonio) was a student at South Side Catholic High School (now St.
Mary’s
High School) in St. Louis, he taught catechism at St. Ambrose parish
on “The Hill,” St. Louis’ famous Italian-American
area. One of Richard’s students was six-year-old Lawrence “Yogi” Berra,
the celebrated Yankees baseball player. After telling the children
the story of Mary and Jesus fleeing to Egypt to escape from Herod,
Richard asked Yogi to perform a “Show & Tell” of the
story. Little Yogi walked to an imaginary “airplane,” and
told Mary to hold Jesus tight because they were flying to Egypt. He
fluttered his wings a few times and sat down. Then opened the “airplane” door
and said, “Here you are, Mary, safe in Egypt.”
