INDIA’S
LARGEST NOVITIATE GROUP TAKES FIRST VOWS
Thirteen Indian
novices professed first vows on May 1 at Nirmal Deep, the largest group
ever to take first vows in India. All members of local
Marianist communities joined the celebration. Fr. Santosh Tudu was the
main celebrant at Eucharist; homilist was Bro. Sukrit Tirkey. Regional
Superior Fr. Ignase Arulappen received the vows. Almost 350 guests came
for the program, which was followed by lunch and dancing that continued
for hours.

Bob Osborne (Curé of Ars, St. Louis) has been
appointed president of St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis
for a three-year term. Our best wishes to Fr. Bob. |
 Fr. Chris
Conlon (Chambers Street Community, Dayton) has been named Outstanding
Part-Time Teacher of the Year - Humanities Base - at the University of
Dayton,
where he has been teaching part time since 1987. Fr. Chris’ full-time position
is in campus ministry. Associate Dean Patricia Johnson wrote in the citation, “Chris
is an enthusiastic teacher who is always willing to engage students and to find
ways of reaching them in the classroom.” Congratulations, Fr. Chris!
Fr.
Steve Tutas (Villa St. Joseph, Cupertino, Calif.) will
return to Hawaii, after more than 40 years away, to become associate
pastor of St. Anthony’s Parish in Maui, effective August

 Fr. Norbert
Burns (Indiana
Avenue Community, Dayton) is being honored at the University of Dayton
with an endowed scholarship fund in his name.
Friends and former students have established the Reverend Norbert
C. Burns Fund for religious study majors. One donor has given $25,000.
Fr.
Norbert has taught religious studies at UD for 45 years. Our best
wishes to him.
Fr.
Jack Russi (San
Juan, Cupertino, Calif.)
and Bro. John Haster (San Francisco) returned
to their communities after completing renewal programs. Fr. Jack
completed his work
May 5 at
a Vatican II Institute in Menlo Park, Calif., and Bro. John completed
his program April 21 at Mercy Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Fr. Bernard
Lee (Woodlawn,
San Antonio) presented his paper, “Anthropological
Presuppositions that Serve Public Theology,” at the University
of Manchester, England, in April. He later facilitated a seminar
on practical theology at Uppsala University, Sweden. Welcome
back and congratulations.
Bro. Ray Fitz
(Stonemill Community, Dayton) gave the keynote address at a Catholic legislative
breakfast on April 4. He outlined issues facing the poor and said that
to transform neighborhoods, people must have the opportunity to work,
have a network of supportive relationships in churches and community organizations,

HAWAIIAN JUBILARIANS CELEBRATE

celebrated April 27 with a special Eucharist and reception in Honolulu.
Fr. Allen DeLong (Center Marianist Community) and Bro.
Jim Facette (Chaminade Pohaku
Community) both are being honored for 50 years as Marianists.

Jim renewed their vows with Fr. Tim Kenney at the Mystical Rose Chapel.
Fr. Allen is president of Saint Louis School; Bro. Jim is environmental
safety officer for Chaminade University. Congratulations to Fr. Allen
and Bro. Jim!

MARIANIST AWARDS PRESENTED
At a ceremony held at Roesch Library at the University of Dayton in
April, three awards named for Marianists who were instrumental in developing
the University's libraries were presented to eight students. The Ruhlman
Award
memorializes Bro. Francis Ruhlman, who directed the
University Library from 1920 through the 1950s. The Klick Award honors
the memory of Bro.
Walter
Klick, who directed UD's Wohlleben Hall Library until its closing
in 1970. The Koehler International Student Award honors Fr. Theodore
A. Koehler,
who
headed UD's Marian Library from 1969 to 1986 and also founded the International
Marian Research Institute and directed it from 1974 to 1986.
MEXICO’S
LAY MARIANISTS

LITURGY COMMISSION MEETS
The four members of the Province Liturgy Commission
met with Fr. Tim Dwyer May 2-3 in St. Louis to discuss the liturgical
formation of Province
members;
Province liturgical celebrations at jubilees, funerals, professions
and annual retreats; and liturgical resources for communities. Bro.
Steve Erspamer is
chair. The group will meet again Oct. 16-18 in Dayton.

TAKING THE PLEDGE
More than 140 graduating seniors from the University of Dayton took a
pledge to exercise responsible citizenship in working for a sustainable
world. The pledge states: “In accordance with (the university’s)
tradition to learn, lead and serve, I pledge to … take into account
the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will
try to improve these aspects … ”

NEW NACMS PUBLICATIONS
The North American Center for Marianist Studies
(NACMS) reports the publication of new works on Marianist spirituality
and history. Virtues for Mission by Fr. Joe Lackner is a reflection on Blessed Chaminade’s spiritual
insights on virtue viewed within the context of contemporary theology
and psychology. Cost is $5 plus postage.
The Courtés Letters documents the two-year tenure of
Jean de Courtés,
second provincial of the first Marianist province in America. Cost
is $8 plus postage, and is free for Marianist brothers, priests and sisters.

MARIANIST TRIVIA
LIFESAVER. What brave Marianist Brother won the AAA (Automobile Association)
National Lifesaving Award at age 13 for jumping into the street and
pushing a woman out of the way of a bus? This Brother was flown to
Washington, D.C., with his parents to accept the award from the Secretary
of Transportation. Answer next issue!
LEADERSHIP TEAM IN SAN ANTONIO
Angie Cortez, coordinator of the Marianist Lay Network of San Antonio
and secretary at St. Mary’s University, reports that the group’s
first leadership team has been chosen. It includes Nicole Trahan (Spirituality),
teacher and sodality coordinator at Central Catholic High School; Becky
Moreno (Instruction), recent alum of St. Mary’s; and Felipe
Barajas (Service), primary school principal and deacon
at Holy Rosary Church. Angie thanks Sr. Grace Luther, FMI, who has mentored the group.

We celebrate the jubilees of 50 members of the Society of Mary this
year from the new Province of the United States, whose combined years
of service exceed 2,095 years of religious profession and 450 years of
ordained ministry. Congratulations to all! We will include photos of every
jubilarian in FamilyOnline in small groups. Our third group includes some
of those who are celebrating 50 years with the Society. Jubilee celebrations
have been held in San Antonio (March 29-30) and Honolulu (April 27) and
will continue on May 18 in San Jose; May 24 in St. Louis; June 14 in Baltimore
and Aug. 16 in Dayton.
