Patrick Thomas McDaid and Richard Charles Villa at Our
Lady of the Pillar Parish in St. Louis. Most Reverend Kevin W. Vann,
bishop of the Diocese of Fort Worth, will preside. Pat and Rich are
seminarians at the International Marianist Seminary in Rome.
Pat, 36, is from Adrian,
Mich. He has a bachelor’s degree in political
science and a master’s degree in education from the University of
Dayton. Pat professed first vows in 1996 and perpetual vows in 2000. Prior
to his seminary
studies, he ministered as a secondary school teacher in Dayton and Cleveland.
Rich, 60, was born
in San Antonio. He has a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor
in theology from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and a master’s
degree in administration from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
Rich professed first vows in 1969 and perpetual vows in 1977. Prior
to his seminary studies, he was assistant dean of student life at the
University of Dallas.
Our prayers for Pat
and Rich!
BRO.
BRIAN HALDERMAN TO PROFESS PERPETUAL VOWS
Bro.
Brian Halderman will profess perpetual vows in the Society of Mary
on Oct. 4, 2008, in Cincinnati. Bro. Brian, 31, hails from Covington,
Ky. He met the Marianists while earning a bachelor’s degree from
the University of Dayton. In 2004, Brian professed first vows. He has
a master’s degree in social work from Washington University in
St. Louis and spent the past year working at the Instituto Chaminade
Marianistas in Callao, Peru. Brian will join the Casa Maria community
in San Antonio. In the fall, he will begin a new job at St. Mary’s
University in San Antonio in the university ministry department, focusing
on social justice programming and the promotion of Catholic Social Teaching.
Our best wishes to Bro. Brian!

Novice Nicole Trahan,
33, a native of Orange, Texas, professed first vows as a Marianist
sister in the Daughters of Mary
Immaculate on
June 21 in San Antonio. Approximately 200 people attended
the Eucharist at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Fr. Oscar
Vasquez was the main
celebrant and Fr. John Thompson was the homilist. Provincial
Evangeline Escobar received the vows. Sr. Nicole is the daughter of Norris and the late Mary
Trahan. Reflecting on her calling, Nicole said
she could
never
find a reason not to become a religious. “The more
I learned about spirituality, the more connected I felt to
it,” she said. “It
was as if everything I had always believed about God and
the Church finally had a name … Marianist.” Nicole
spent her novitiate in Dayton volunteering part time with
the Diocese
of Cincinnati
Catholic Social Action Office, assisting with Lay Marianist
formation at the
University of Dayton, and serving as a regional coordinator
for Marianist LIFE. Her new ministry begins in the fall,
when she will
serve as
campus minister for residence life and faith education
at the University of Dayton. Our prayers and best wishes
to
Nicole!

CFL CENTER IN N. CAROLINA TO BE SOLD; MINISTRY CONTINUES
Due to financial
issues, the buildings of the Christian Family Living Center on
North Topsail Beach, N.C. – which have housed Marianist
Family Ministries, Inc. since 1978 – are being sold. The
ministry, however, will continue. “We are excited about continuing
the retreat ministry in a new way, sharing the Marianist charism
through
spirituality, hospitality and community,” said Tina Bauman,
chair of the board of directors of MFM, Inc. The board is working
on a business plan and a ministry plan to continue the ministry
in a new location.
“The ministerial and pastoral needs of the people of God are
always changing,” said Bro. Jack Ventura, Province representative
to the board. “While the closing of the Center can be seen as
an ending, I am excited to see the bold steps taken by the board to
respond to the emerging needs of the Church. This change will ensure
another 30 years of vibrant family Christian ministry.”
The Center, which was
patterned after the Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May Point,
N.J., ministered to families in the Marianist tradition. The Marianists’
former New York Province supported the creation of the ministry. The
decision to sell the buildings was due to several factors: a decline
in attendance, a smaller volunteer base, and aging buildings that have
been damaged by the environment and a major fire in 2003. The Center
will close Sept. 15, 2008.
Read a letter from
Tina Bauman to the friends and supporters of the CFL. For information
about final retreats and activities at the Christian
Family Living Center, see the current issue of High Tidings in the “Newsletter
Central” section below.
