SEVEN COMPLETE MINISTRY TRAINING IN NAIROBI, KENYA

Marianists in Nairobi gathered May 10 at the scholasticate community to celebrate the graduation of seven brothers who have completed their initial training for ministry. Bros. Floyd Chanda, Moses Atito Okoth and Philip Adoka graduated from Christ the Teacher Institute for Education at Tangaza College in Nairobi. Bro. Kondwani Nalivata completed his certificate in mechanical engineering from the Nairobi Technical Institute. Three brothers from Togo, Bros. Ferdinand Amana, Jerome Abora and Louis-Daniel Lomie, completed their course work and will receive their bachelor’s degrees formally in October from Catholic University of Eastern Africa. Congratulations to all the graduates!

Congratulations to Bro. Joseph Maria Mwaura (Bro. Jomo) of the District of Eastern Africa, who graduated May 17 from Loyola College in Maryland with a master’s degree in pastoral counseling. Bro. Jomo graduated first of 44 graduate students and served as class valedictorian. He will return to Kenya at the end of June to prepare to become the new novice director for the District of Eastern Africa. Our best wishes to Bro. Jomo in his new ministry!

 

LALANNE PROGRAM TO EXPAND TO SAN ANTONIO

The Lalanne Program of the University of Dayton Center for Catholic Education is expanding. In August 2008 a Lalanne community will open in San Antonio, according to Debra Sanderman, program director. Lalanne is a program in which teachers make a two-year commitment to teach in a Catholic school while living in community and pursuing professional and spiritual development. The San Antonio community will include four teachers in three schools. The Marianist Foundation is a contributor to the Lalanne program and its expansion. Read more.

MARIANISTS CELEBRATE JUBILEES IN SAN ANTONIO

Approximately 200 Marianist family members, relatives and friends attended the Marianist jubilee celebration May 17 at the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Fr. George Montague (Casa San Juan, San Antonio), who was celebrating his 50th sacerdotal, was the presider. Serving as homilist and celebrating his 50th anniversary as a Marianist was Fr. Jerry Pleva (Wailuku, Maui). Other honorees included Fr. Herb Pieper (80 years and 70th sacerdotal); Fr. Paul Ryan (75 years); Bro. Francis Singler (70 years); Bros. Al Kuntemeier and Bob Riemann (60 years); Bros. Delmar Jorn, Earl Leistikow and Ed Loch (50 years); and Fr. Gus Biehl (50th sacerdotal). A reception followed at the St. Mary’s University Center Atrium. A slideshow of the San Antonio jubilee will appear in the next issue of FamilyOnline. Congratulations and best wishes to all!

Fr. John Manahan will join the DeSales Crossings community in Cincinnati in the next week to assist Fr. Ed Jach, pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish, who is recuperating from surgery. For the past year, Fr. John has done pastoral and campus ministry work at Nolan Catholic High School in Ft. Worth. Our best wishes to Fr. John in his new ministry.

Bro. Stan Mathews

Bro. Stanley Mathews (Mercy Siena, Dayton), 85, who died May 18, 2008. May he rest in peace. Bro. Stan ministered in Cleveland and Dayton for 65 years. He was an English teacher, principal, librarian, the first rector of the University of Dayton and a longtime member of the school's board of trustees. In the former Province of Cincinnati, he served as assistant provincial, director of education, vocation director and councilor. Bro. Stan was a member of the Provincial Chapter and General Chapter. He is remembered as a first-class Marianist, who led with wisdom, kindness and grace. He also loved the Cincinnati Reds. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated yesterday at Immaculate Conception Chapel at the University of Dayton. Fr. Jim Fitz, assistant provincial, was the presider and represented the Provincial Council. Bro. Mike O’Grady was the homilist and Fr. Tom Schroer gave the eulogy. Burial was today at Queen of Heaven Cemetery at Mount St. John in Dayton. Read Bro. Stan’s obituary.

Fr. Jean-Baptiste Armbruster (Province of France), 85, who died May 16, 2008, in Pessac, France. May he rest in peace. Read Fr. Jean-Baptiste’s obituary.

Bro. Hermann Huber (Region of Switzerland), 90, who died May 10, 2008, in Fribourg, Switzerland. May he rest in peace. Read Bro. Hermann’s obituary.

Kumu John Keola Lake, 70, who died May 14, 2008. May he rest in peace. Kumu Lake was the kumu-in-residence at Chaminade University of Honolulu, Hawai’i, and taught at Saint Louis School for more than 30 years, where he started the school’s Hawaiian Studies Program. He graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in Wailuku, Maui. Services will be held May 31 at the Mystical Rose Chapel on the Saint Louis School and Chaminade University campus. WHO'S DOING WHAT. . .

Instead of watching television, Bro. Gene Meyerpeter (Curé of Ars, St. Louis) is taking free online courses from Yale and MIT in psychology, political science and chemistry as well as listening to lectures in the fields of technology, business, science and culture. “They keep my brain and thought processes alive. I enjoy the mental stimulation,” says Bro. Gene. He says all you need is a computer with earphones or speakers; there is no cost and no requirement to spend any specific amount of time. View links for the online courses as well as lectures from the “TED Conferences.”

Bernard Meyer in the May 2008 issue of Homiletic & Pastoral Review by nominating him for the “My Favorite Priest” feature. “Father Meyer … did ordinary things with great and lasting results. ALIVE magazine and FamilyOnline, two publications produced by the Province Office of Communications, took top honors at the International Association of Business Communicators' Bronze Quill Awards on May 22 in St. Louis. The awards honor local communicators who have developed well-conceived strategies and creative execution that deliver measurable results.

On May 21, the Provincial Office in St. Louis threw a surprise wedding shower for Ruth Hinde, Marianist Volunteer Program assistant coordinator, and her fiancé Michael Pera. Ruth and Michael are getting married on June 7 at the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the University of Dayton. Fr. Chris Wittmann is presiding. Our best wishes to Ruth and Michael!

Marianist Sharing Fund. Elizabeth Kaigh, a student at St. Mary’s University School of Law, has been awarded a $4,000 summer internship grant from the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative’s Anti-Death Penalty Issue Team. The grant was funded by the Marianist Sharing Fund to place a law student with the Texas Defender Service. The TDS is a non-profit organization devoted to establishing a fair and just criminal justice system available to all Texans. Read more.

NEW HOME AT ST. MEINRAD FOR “THE LAST SUPPER”

The Marianist Gallery in St. Louis has donated artwork depicting the Last Supper to St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana. Bro. Mel Meyer (Curé of Ars, St. Louis) created the piece, which was once displayed at the former novitiate in Galesville, Wis. Bro. Mel took the piece from storage and donated it for the dining room of St. Meinrad’s new guest house. “We’re pleased it has found a new home where it will be on display and appreciated,” said Bro. Mel.

 

A REFLECTION ON THE FEAST OF THE VISITATION

“Mary walked in the light of faith. God told her enough about his plan for her to make each new step. Faith is not only intellectual, that is, belief. NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL in Pittsburgh has named Louis Lazzaro principal, effective July 1, 2008. Mr. Lazzaro served this past year as acting principal.

CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY IN ST. LOUIS. Ray Harter, director of the Marianist Servant Leadership Program at CCP, announces that in 2008 CCP performed 27,600 hours of Christian service and collected $31,514 for local, national and international charities. Read more.

NOLAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL. Major League Baseball coach Richard Donnelly visited students at Nolan Catholic recently. He didn’t come to talk about baseball. He came to share the lessons he learned about faith from his daughter who died of cancer. Read the story. PURCELL MARIAN HIGH SCHOOL. Congratulations to theatre teacher Allan Karol, who was saluted May 19 as an outstanding teacher at the Cincinnati Enquirer/Fifth Third Theatre Educator Awards. As part of the ceremony, Purcell Marian was awarded $1,000 for its theatre program. Karol has directed the school’s 50-year-old theatre program for the past 10 years. Read more.

Purcell Marian High School has been selected as a regional test site to showcase a new system of computers without hard drives that are linked to a few central servers. They are expected to save thousands of dollars in hardware, software, maintenance and electrical costs. Read more.

CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY OF HONOLULU has partnered with EMI Network of Cincinnati to create a Digitorial® College Tour video library on its Web site. The video library is expected to increase visibility and reach to students around the world. The library also will appear with the university's listing on the Web site of U.S. News & World Report. ST. JOHN VIANNEY HIGH SCHOOL in St. Louis placed second in the K-12 rating tournament at the United States Chess Federation National Championship in April in Atlanta. Diehard Chicago Cubs fan and St. John Vianney High School Principal Larry Keller washes senior Jason Smith’s car. Keller was on the losing end of a bet with Smith that the Cubs would win a recent weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals. As part of the wager, Keller had to wear a Cardinals shirt while washing the car. He later used the shirt to buff the car!
