TRAINING IN NAIROBI, KENYA

Marianists in Nairobi
gathered May 10 at the scholasticate community to celebrate the graduation
of
seven brothers who have completed
their initial training for ministry. Bros. Floyd Chanda, Moses
Atito Okoth
and Philip Adoka graduated from Christ the Teacher
Institute for Education at Tangaza College in Nairobi. Bro.
Kondwani Nalivata completed his
certificate in mechanical engineering from the Nairobi Technical
Institute. Three brothers from Togo, Bros. Ferdinand Amana,
Jerome Abora and Louis-Daniel
Lomie, completed their course work and will receive their bachelor’s
degrees formally in October from Catholic University of Eastern
Africa. Congratulations to all the graduates!

Congratulations to
Bro. Joseph Maria Mwaura (Bro. Jomo) of the District of Eastern
Africa, who graduated May 17 from Loyola
College in
Maryland with a master’s degree in pastoral counseling. Bro.
Jomo graduated first of 44 graduate students and served as class
valedictorian.
He will return to Kenya at the end of June to prepare to become
the new novice director for the District of Eastern Africa. Our
best wishes to Bro. Jomo in his new ministry!
LALANNE PROGRAM TO
EXPAND TO SAN ANTONIO

The Lalanne
Program of the University of Dayton Center for Catholic
Education is expanding. In August 2008 a Lalanne community
will open in San Antonio, according to Debra Sanderman,
program director. Lalanne is a program in which teachers
make a two-year commitment to teach in a Catholic school
while living in community and pursuing professional and spiritual
development. The San Antonio community will include four
teachers in three schools. The Marianist Foundation is a
contributor to the Lalanne program and its expansion. Read

Approximately
200 Marianist family members, relatives and friends attended the
Marianist
jubilee celebration May 17 at the Chapel
of Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Mary’s University in
San Antonio. Fr. George Montague (Casa San Juan, San Antonio),
who was celebrating his 50th sacerdotal, was the presider.
Serving as homilist and celebrating
his 50th anniversary as a Marianist was Fr. Jerry Pleva (Wailuku,
Maui). Other honorees included Fr. Herb Pieper (80
years and 70th sacerdotal); Fr. Paul Ryan (75 years); Bro.
Francis Singler (70 years);
Bros. Al Kuntemeier and Bob Riemann (60 years); Bros.
Delmar Jorn, Earl Leistikow and Ed Loch (50 years);
and Fr.
Gus Biehl (50th sacerdotal).
A reception followed at the St. Mary’s University Center

Bro.
Stanley Mathews (Mercy Siena, Dayton), 85, who died May 18, 2008.
May he rest in
peace. Bro. Stan ministered in Cleveland and
Dayton for 65 years.
He was an English teacher, principal, librarian, the first rector of the
University of Dayton and a longtime member of the school's board
of trustees. In the former
Province of Cincinnati, he served as assistant provincial, director of
education, vocation director and councilor. Bro. Stan was a member
of the Provincial Chapter
and General Chapter. He is remembered as a first-class Marianist, who led
with wisdom, kindness and grace. He also loved the Cincinnati Reds.
A Mass of Christian
Burial was celebrated yesterday at Immaculate Conception Chapel at the
University of Dayton. Fr. Jim Fitz, assistant provincial,
was the presider and represented
the Provincial Council. Bro. Mike O’Grady was the homilist
and Fr.
Tom Schroer gave the eulogy. Burial was today
at Queen
of Heaven Cemetery at Mount St. John in Dayton. Read

Hawaiian Studies Program. He graduated from St. Anthony’s
High School in Wailuku, Maui. Services will be held May 31
at the Mystical Rose Chapel on the Saint Louis School and Chaminade

to establishing a fair and just criminal justice

Marianist Gallery in St. Louis has donated artwork depicting
the Last Supper
to St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana. Bro. Mel Meyer (Curé of
Ars, St. Louis) created the piece, which was once displayed at
the former novitiate in Galesville, Wis. Bro. Mel took the piece
from storage
and donated it for the dining room of St. Meinrad’s new
guest house. “We’re pleased it has found a new home
where it will be on display and appreciated,” said Bro.
