TWO NOVICES PROFESS FIRST VOWS AT MOUNT ST. JOHN

On May 17, novices Thomas O'Neill Farnsworth and Luis Gamboa professed first vows during a Eucharist at Queen of Apostles Chapel at Mount Saint John in Dayton.

Assistant Provincial Fr. Jim Fitz presided at the Mass. Fr. Bill Behringer was the homilist and Provincial Stephen Glodek received the first vows. Bro. Charles Johnson, national vocation director, served as master of ceremonies. The celebration was attended by approximately 250 family members, friends and members of the Marianist community. A reception followed at Bergamo Center at Mount Saint John with Bro. Mike O’Grady acting as master of ceremonies.

Bro. Tom, 42, is from the San Francisco Bay area. He has a doctorate in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology of Alliant International University. As a contact, he served in the counseling department at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. During his aspirancy, he worked as a counselor in Cleveland at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School and St. Agatha-St. Aloysius grade school and at St. Joseph grade school in Collinwood. He currently teaches undergraduate psychology courses at the University of Dayton, works in the counseling center as a psychology resident, and serves as a consultant/facilitator on the campus Alcohol and Drug Prevention Team. Bro. Tom will join the Alumni Hall community in Dayton and will continue his teaching and counseling ministry at UD.

Bro. Luis, 34, was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. He has a master's degree in Spanish literature from Loyola University of Chicago. As an aspirant, Luis taught Spanish language and culture to African-American students in Cleveland. Most recently, he taught Spanish at Chaminade University of Honolulu. Bro. Luis will join the Center Marianist community in Honolulu and will teach and serve in campus ministry at Chaminade University of Honolulu.

Bro. Stan, early years

Bro. Stanley Mathews (Mercy Siena, Dayton), 85, who died May 18, 2008. May he rest in peace. Bro. Stan ministered in Cleveland and Dayton for 65 years. He was an English teacher, principal, librarian, the first rector of the University of Dayton and a longtime member of the school's board of trustees. In the former Province of Cincinnati, he served as assistant provincial, director of education, vocation director and councilor. Bro. Stan was a member of the Provincial Chapter and General Chapter. He is remembered as a first-class Marianist, who led with wisdom, kindness and grace. He also loved the Cincinnati Reds. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Immaculate Conception Chapel at the University of Dayton. Viewing is at 6 p.m.; Mass begins at 7 p.m. Burial is Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at Queen of Heaven Cemetery at Mount St. John in Dayton. Bro. Stan's obituary will appear in the next issue of FamilyOnline.
