NOVICES MAKE FIRST PROFESSION IN RANCHI, INDIA

On May 4, Marianist
family members, relatives and friends gathered in Ranchi, India, to
witness five men make their first procession into the Society of Mary.
Fr. D'Cruz Nicholas (novice director) was the main
celebrant at the Eucharist. Fr. Pragasam T. (district
superior) received the vows. Bro. Ed Violett, assistant
general for temporalities, gave the brothers the Rule of Life. The regional
superiors of Japan and Korea (Fr. Kazuo Louis-Ibaragi Shimizu
and Fr. Pascal Lee) along with Bros. Beda Ahn
(Korea) and Dave Herbold (Japan) welcomed the new brothers
with garlands. Congratulations to all!

FIRST
VOW CEREMONY TO BE CELEBRATED IN DAYTON

On May 17, Novices
Tom Farnsworth and Luis Gamboa will
take first vows in the Society of Mary. The Eucharistic celebration
will be at 4 p.m. at Queen of Apostles Chapel at Mount Saint John in
Dayton. Assistant Provincial Fr. Jim Fitz will preside
at the Eucharist. Receiving the vows will be Provincial Stephen
Glodek. Fr. Bill Behringer will give the homily.
A reception and dinner will follow at Bergamo Center.
Tom, 42, is from the
San Francisco Bay Area. He has a doctorate in clinical psychology from
the California School of Professional Psychology of Alliant International
University. As a contact, he served in the counseling department at
Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. During his aspirancy,
he worked as a counselor in Cleveland at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High
School and St. Agatha-St. Aloysius grade school and at St. Joseph grade
school in Collinwood. He currently teaches undergraduate psychology
courses at the University of Dayton, works in the counseling center
as a psychology resident, and serves as a consultant/facilitator on
the campus Alcohol and Drug Prevention Team.
Luis, 34, was born in
Guadalajara, Mexico. He has a master's degree in Spanish literature
from Loyola University of Chicago. As an aspirant, Luis taught Spanish
language and culture to African-American students in Cleveland. Most
recently, he taught Spanish at Chaminade University of Honolulu. Our
prayers and best wishes to the novices as they prepare for first vows!

More than 300 Marianist
family members, relatives and friends attended the jubilee celebration
for eight Marianists on May 3 at Our Lady of the Pillar parish in St.
Louis. Fr. Quentin Hakenewerth (District of Mexico),
who was celebrating 60 years of religious life, was the presider and
homilist for the celebration. Also celebrating 60th jubilees were Bros.
Al Kuntemeier (Fort Worth, Texas), Mel Meyer
(Curé of Ars, St. Louis) and Bill O'Leary (Our
Lady of the Pillar, St. Louis). Celebrating 50th jubilees were Bros.
Delmar Jorn (District of India), John Laudenbach (East
St. Louis, Ill.), Earl Leistikow (Woodlawn, San Antonio)
and Ed Loch (Central Catholic, San Antonio). A reception
followed at the parish. Congratulations and best wishes to all!

The Marianist Lay Affiliate
task force met May 2 at the Provincial Office in St. Louis. The Task
Force is led by Bro. Jack Ventura, Office of Religious
Life. Members of the team include Frs. Bert Buby, Al McMenamy
and Pat Tonry and Lay Marianist Affiliates Denise
O’Connor and Carol Weiss. Affiliates Joe and Juanita
Rangel were
unable to attend. The
group discussed ideas for print and online materials for Lay Marianist
Affiliate formation, issues relating to initial and ongoing formation
and the creation of an affiliate database. They also celebrated Fr.
Pat Tonry's birthday. Happy Birthday Fr. Pat!

Fr. George Cerniglia,
assistant in the Office of Religious Life, and Fr. Tom Cardone,
provincial of the Province of Meribah, recently led one of the annual
retreats for Marianists in Eastern Africa. The retreat was held at
a diocesan facility in Chipata, Zambia, about halfway between Karonga,
Malawi, and Lusaka, Zambia. A highlight of the retreat was the renewal
of temporary vows on May 3 of Bros. Daniel Odero, Julius Nandi and
Hanson Sitali. The group also celebrated the Silver
Jubilee of Bro. John Woo (District of Korea). Best
wishes to all!

Bob Moriarty (Vernon, Conn.) reports that there have
been positive responses to the first edition of Quest in Spanish,
a translated version of Quest in English, which offers
reflections for small faith communities. The Pastoral Department
for Small Christian Communities (Archdiocese of Hartford) received
a grant of $10,000 to support the continued development and
promotion of Quest in Spanish. |

Joe Lynch (Hewlett, N.Y.) has published "Reaching
Out, How to Communicate Gospel Hope and Love to 21st Century
Catholics."
In the book, Fr. Joe presents the current theological and sociological
framework of Catholic faith life and offers suggestions to meet today's
challenges. Bro. Stephen Glodek wrote the introduction

A VISIT TO NAGASAKI, JAPAN

Immigration
Conference.
The Marianist Province of the U.S. was a sponsor of an April
conference in St. Louis on "Immigrants, Immigration and
People of Faith." The event advocated
for basic rights for all immigrants. Read

Marianist
Sharing Fund.
Fr. John Bakle (Columbus, Ohio) presented
a Sharing Fund grant to the St. Vincent de Paul Conference
at Christ the King parish in Columbus. The funding supports
a community store where clients can choose packaged food items,
and home-grown fruits and vegetables from the community garden;
a free clothing and household items store; and free healthcare
screening. Fr. John also presented a check to the Columbus
BREAD organization to facilitate legal action against those
who engage in outrageous practices against the poor.

CHAMINADE
COLLEGE PREPARATORY IN ST. LOUIS. Symphonic
Band, Jazz Band and Combo Band members performed in April
at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School in Dayton and
the University of Dayton. The band students took a break
from competing in regional and national competitions to
try a different performance experience.
"The students and teachers were extremely hospitable and
welcoming to us," said John Hahn, CCP

for a Disney Channel movie called "Princess

Mother Seton Academy
in Baltimore made its annual eighth grade retreat to The Marianist Family
Retreat Center in Cape May Point, N.J. The retreat theme was "Go
Make a Difference in God's World" and was led by Marianist Contact
Ben Pollicino, Jessica Sherwen, program director, and
Anthony Fucci, retreat center director. Activities included
presentations, team building, special rituals, prayer services and time
for fun. The group made field trips to the Cape May County Zoo and the
Cape May Whale Watcher. Also attending the retreat were several Mother
Seton faculty members, including Bro. Jesse O’Neill
and Sr. Charmaine Krohe, SSND, school president. “The
retreat was extremely moving, and the students were just wonderful,”
said Anthony Fucci.

with the families who attended the Mother's Day Weekend at the Christian
Family Living Retreat Center on Topsail Island, N.C. Marianist Affiliate
Carol Weiss served as director for a weekend of family
activities and affirming presentations. The attendees were a mix of
families, including nuclear, multi-generational, ethnically-diverse,
single-parent and military families. One of the guests commented, "I
loved the center, such a strong presence of Jesus."
