On
April 25, Chaminade University of Honolulu dedicated its Sullivan
Family Library, the
largest academic building constructed on its campus
since the school’s founding in 1955. The $14.8 million, 30,000-square
foot facility will function as a library and information services resource
center. Students will have access to approximately 34,000 electronic
books, 70,000 print books, 240 journals and 19,000 online journals.
The facility also contains multimedia rooms, a 40-station computer
lab and rooms for studying and meetings. “We are tremendously
grateful for the support provided by Joanna Lau Sullivan and
family and by the Atlantic Philanthropies in making this project
possible,” said Dr. Sue Wesselkamper, president of Chaminade
University. “The
new Sullivan Family Library will provide members of the Chaminade community
with an expanded learning environment that will alter the way knowledge
is acquired on and off campus.” Funding for the library was part
of the school’s successful “Transformations” overall
campaign (including both capital and other forms of external support)
which raised $61 million, surpassing its goal of $50 million. Special
guests Most Rev. Clarence (Larry) Silva, bishop of Honolulu, and Marcia
Bulosan, a protégé of Chaminade’s Kumu-in-Residence John Keola Lake, gave
blessings. Hawai’i Lt. Governor James
R. “Duke” Aiona,
Jr. and Mayor Mufi Hannemann also attended. Read more from the Honolulu Advertiser.

who works with service learning; Mrs. Joanna Lau Sullivan joins
in a traditional “lion dance,” which was part
of the entertainment at the dedication; and Bro. Glodek and Fr.
Dave Schuyler, members of the Board of Regents, with Cori
Ching Weston, also a Board of Regents member. The library
was named for Mrs. Sullivan’s family, a major donor
for the building. |

Provincial Stephen
Glodek has announced that the Province of the U.S. has agreed to
take over jurisdiction of the foundation
in the
Philippines. The effective date is pending agreement
on a memo of understanding with the General Council. The request
came
earlier
this year from the General Council and was approved by
the Provincial Chapter in early March. A consultation of all
brothers in March
was
overwhelmingly supportive of the request. The Philippines
is an established foundation consisting of four religious. Their
ministry is assisting
the street children of Davao City. A novitiate is under
construction
in Davao City and is slated to open June 1, 2008. The
community will include four novices under the direction of Fr.
Pablo Rambaud (Province
of Madrid), who is serving as novice director. The Provincial
Council was asked to send an additional senior religious
to the new novitiate.
Bro. Stephen announced in his April 21 message to the
Province
that Bro. Hugh Bihl has accepted the assignment
and will arrive in August. “Hugh
stands as a model for us of generosity and service,” said
Bro. Stephen.
