MARIANIST SCHOOLS ARE IMMERSED IN LOUISIANA CLEAN UP

Students from Daniel J. Gross Catholic High School work on the floor of a house being constructed in New
Orleans.

Over the last three years, Marianist schools have raised $200,000 to support the relief efforts of Catholic Charities, Camp Restore and Habitat for Humanity for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. During spring break, 120 students from eight Marianist schools presented checks to the organizations and assisted with their rebuilding efforts. High schools participating included Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati), Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco), Daniel J. Gross (Bellevue, Neb.), Purcell Marian (Cincinnati), St. John Vianney (St. Louis), St. Mary's (St. Louis) and Villa Angela-St. Joseph (Cleveland). Students from the University of Dayton also made the trip. "Having these kids show up on spring break is a source of hope for the victims of Hurricane Katrina," said Myles McCabe, director of the Province Office of Peace & Justice, who organized the trips. Since 2005, more than 1,000 students from Marianist schools have participated in immersion trips to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. In addition to helping with clean up and construction, the students listened to the stories of volunteers from AmeriCorps, met with a family affected by the devastation, and spoke with Lay Marianist Kevin Fitzpatrick, who gave an overview of the disaster and how the Church responded. "The trip was an enlightening experience," said Stephanie Lackey, a senior at Purcell Marian. "It showed me how much of the city is still not rebuilt and how much the people love the city. There's a lot to be fixed but still a lot of hope."

VASJ and Archbishop Riordan students. Some of the VASJ students are part of the UD Pre-Engineering Program. The immersion trip provided them with a socially responsible experience where they could apply their engineering skills.
