THE
LEGACY CONTINUES
Bro.
Martin McMurtrey
|
Bro. Martin McMurtrey
(Central Catholic Community, San Antonio) retired from Central Catholic
High School in 2000, but his legacy lives on. It persists not only in
the lives of the more than 6,000 students he influenced during his 49
years at the school as a beloved English teacher, but also in the scholarship
fund created in his name in 1975. Approximately $250,000 in scholarships
has been awarded in the history of the fund.
This year, 19 students
received scholarships that total $24,875. One parent wrote, "Thank
you for helping my son fulfill his dreams. I believe he will grow to be
another success story out of a great institution."
Brother Mac continues
to commit many hours to building the fund. It received a healthy boost
on Oct. 7, 2000, when 300 friends and former students celebrated his retirement
with a dinner called "The Last English Class." On that evening
$106,000 was raised.

MANNA
FROM MEXICO
Bro. Roberto Rapp
(La Chinantla, Veracruz, Mexico) is excited to announce a grant of more
than $100,000 from the Mexican government to DECAMP, the Marianist Rural
Development Project in the Uxpanapa Valley. The money will purchase additional
chilling tanks for milk production, allowing 80 more Mexican farmers to
sell their milk to DECAMP's cheese factory and lift themselves out of
poverty. The grant will increase milk production from 4,200 liters of
milk per day to 6,000 . . . resulting in an increase of cheese production
from 4,800 pounds of cheese per week to 8,000 pounds. Bro. Roberto says
he's now showing a profit -- a word his friends say he never understood.
ADOPT
A BROTHER
Bro.
John Sheehy
|
The Marianist Residence
on the campus of St. Mary's University in San Antonio celebrated the fifth
anniversary of its Adopt a Brother program March 1. DeLisa Nichols,
activities coordinator, founded the program to give retired Marianists,
with their education and experience, and university students, with their
energy and enthusiasm,
the opportunity to visit regularly.
Political science student
John Hodge was particularly happy when Nichols paired him with Bro.
John Sheehy. "He knows everything about politics," Hodge
says. "He tells me about campaigns he's worked on. He's told me stories
that changed my life. I've learned more from him than I could have ever
imagined." Hodge says his commitment to the program is one of the
best decisions he has made at St. Mary's.
