Chaminade
University of Honolulu is one of only three colleges and universities
nationwide to receive the Presidential Award for
Service
to Youth from Disadvantaged Circumstances from the Corporation
for National and Community Service. The award is the highest
recognition a school can achieve for service learning and civic engagement.
Chaminade’s
achievements include 62,000 hours of service performed by the university
community with 85 percent of the student body participating in
service to disadvantaged youth. “We consider service to be
a key component in educating our students and preparing them to become
engaged citizens,” said
Chaminade President Sue Wesselkamper. The Corporation for
National and Community Service is a federal agency focused on service
and
volunteering. The organization also named St. Mary’s University
in San Antonio to its community service honor roll. Read

Four Marianists
from the District of Eastern Africa participated in the diocesan
Assembly Feb. 7 to Feb. 14 in Rumbek,
Sudan.
The brothers were in Sudan to explore a request by Bishop Caesar Mazzolari for
the Marianists to open a teacher training college in Rumbek.
Attending the meetings were Bro. Paul Kageche, Bro.
Joseph Maricky and Fr. Martin Solma. Bro. Stan Zubek attended
as director
of
the Bakhita
Formation Centre in Kitale, Kenya (a junior seminary for
the Rumbek diocese). The Marianists visited the proposed
site of the new college and held discussions with Bishop
Mazzolari and the
diocese director of education. It is hoped that the
new center would provide 700 trained teachers and help strengthen
the
Church in southern
Sudan. According to Fr. Martin, the District Council
is willing to respond, but issues such as funding need
to
be resolved. “The
days in Rumbek made it clear the need is real and extremely
important,” he
said.
