DISTRICT

Offering a toast to friends and family at the reception, newly professed Bro.
Esteban Reyes Durán, Bro. Mario Uziel Verduzco Déniz,
Bro. José Jesús Ruiz Santillán and Bro.
Nereo Ramírez
Hernández
On Saturday, December 8, the feast
of the Immaculate Conception, the District of Mexico had much to
celebrate – the profession of
four men to the Society of Mary. Professing perpetual vows was Bro.
Esteban Reyes Durán from the state of Guerero. Professing first
vows were Bro. José Jesús Ruiz Santillán, from
the state of Guanajuato; Bro. Nereo Ramírez Hernández,
of the state of San Luis Potosi; and Bro. Mario Uziel Verduzco
Déniz of Pihuamo, state of Jalisco.
The Eucharist and vow ceremony were
held at Our Lady of Guadalupe chapel in the Amanecer Balvanera neighborhood
where the Marianist pre-novitiate
is located. Provincial Stephen Glodek received the vows; Fr.
Quentin Hakenewerth celebrated the Eucharist with concelebrants Frs.
Joseph Lackner, Paul Neumann and Mario Gonzalez-Simancas. District Superior
Roberto Hanss presented the professed with a Marianist cross, and Fr.
Mario blessed the perpetual vow ring for Bro. Esteban. Readers and
cantors at Mass included Amada Reyes Durán, Sister Reina Verduzco
Déniz, and the godfather of Bro. Nereo.
The reception meal
was organized, prepared and served by local Lay Marianist communities.
Celebration music was led by Marianist prenovices and by choirs from
Lourdes and Salto Espejo, two neighborhood communities. On the evening
before the profession day, Brother Esteban made a presentation in
the chapel to local youth and others about his vocation and the process
of discerning one’s life direction.
Heartiest congratulations
to the four newly professed!

The families of the four men professing vows joined in the celebration, clockwise

his mother and sister; Bro. Nereo with his mother
and godfather prior to vows; and Bro. Mario Uziel with

Ranchi, India. Fr. Pragasam Thathappa, district superior of India,
received the vows. Concelebrants included Frs. David Fleming and Fr.
José Ramón Sebastián de Erice, a Spanish
Marianist working at the Faustino community in Bangalore. Several
diocesan priests from Sivagangai and local priests from other religious
orders also participated. The Mass was followed by a meal and a cultural
program presented by the aspirants, REDS (Ragpickers’ Education
and Development Scheme) children and student brothers. Bro. Chittibabu
is principal of St. Mary’s Multipurpose Training Institute

“Discernment… The
Next Step” was the theme of the contact retreat held Dec. 7
to Dec. 9 at the Christian Family Living Retreat Center on N. Topsail
Island in North Carolina. Ten men gathered with Fr. John
Thompson, main presenter, Bro. Charles Johnson, national
vocation director, Ray McCracken (NACMS) and Jessica
Sherwen, Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May Point,
N.J. The group explored discernment issues and joined in faith sharing,
prayer, Eucharist and a question and answer session. Participant Michael
Chiuri was appreciative of the advice he received for his
future discernment. “Fr. John emphasized that any true vocation
is two sided. On one side you have abundant life and on the other
you have sacrifice. Whatever path we choose, God will bless us richly
if we are true to him,” said Michael. A highlight of the weekend
according to Michael was walking on the beach with other contacts
and sharing life experiences. “The organization of the retreat
was impressive. My sincere gratitude to Bro. Charles for making the
retreat possible, to Fr. John, Jessica and Ray for the beautiful
content and to Marilynn Shackelford and the staff
at Topsail for the comfortable accommodations,” said Michael.
