MARIANIST MARTYRS OF MADRID BEATIFIED IN ROME


Thousands gather in Vatican Square for the beatification celebration

Over 100,000 people gathered Oct. 28 in St. Peter’s Square in Rome to witness the beatification ceremony of the four Marianist Martyrs of Madrid, Fr. Miguel Leibar, and Bros. Florencio Arnaiz, Sabino Ayastuy and Joaquín Ochoa, and 494 other martyrs of the twentieth century in Spain. The martyrs were beatified by His Eminence Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI. The beatification events were attended by many Marianist brothers and members of the FMI, Alliance Mariale and MLC-CLM. Three former superiors general attended, including Frs. EIGHT MAKE COMMITMENT TO NOVITIATE IN EASTERN AFRICA

“VOCATION SUMMIT” HELD AT ST. MARY’S UNIVERSITY

During the weekend of Oct. 26, a “Vocation Summit” was held at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, coordinated by Bro. Charles Johnson, national vocation director, and Sr. Gretchen Trautman. The purpose of the summit was to bring people together to discuss Marianist vocations and vocation efforts in the San Antonio area. “We gathered to celebrate and build on the past and look with hope to the future,” said Bro. Charles. Attending the meeting were more than 65 professed Marianist brothers, priests and sisters as well as lay Marianists. Bro. Paul Bednarczyk, CSC, executive director of the National Religious Vocation Conference (NRVC), facilitated the group. Speakers included Bro. John Totten and Joe Melendrez, a student at the University of Dayton and graduate of Central Catholic High School in San Antonio. “The summit was highly successful, and I want to thank Bro. Bill Chewning, who came up with the idea, and Sr. Gretchen, for her coordination efforts,” Bro. Charles said. Fr. Richard Wosman presided at Eucharist at the summit. Read Fr. Richard’s homily.

SIX EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATES WELCOMED AT CUH


At the Mystical Rose Oratory at Chaminade University, Fr. Ken Templin blesses the new MEAs – Larry Osborne, Sharon LePage, Curtis Washburn, Patty Lee Robinson, David Anderson and Aulani Kaanoi.

Bro. Jerry Bommer, rector of Chaminade University of Honolulu, welcomed six new Marianist Educational Associates at Chaminade University’s special celebration for the Marianists’ 190th Anniversary (Blessed William Joseph Chaminade founded the Society of Mary in France in October 1817). The MEAs made a commitment to work within the university to support its Marianist identity. Each completed a week-long training course last summer at Saint Mary’s University in San Antonio. Nine other individuals at Chaminade University became associates in 2005 and 2006.

MARIANIST LEADERSHIP SCHOLARS HELP IN EAST ST. LOUIS

Fourteen Marianist Leadership Scholars from the University of Dayton spent their fall break (Oct. 11 to Oct. 14) volunteering in East St. Louis, Ill. The experience, which focused on justice from the Marianist perspective, was sponsored by the UD Office of the Rector with support from the Province office of vocations. Presenters included Fr. Jim Fitz (assistant provincial), Bro. John Laudenbach, Bro. Ed Brink (assistant for education), Dan Richter (Marianist Volunteer Program) and Ruth Hinde (Marianist Volunteer Program).

Fr. Edmund Rhodes (Mercy Siena, Dayton), 97, who died Nov. 3, 2007, in Dayton. May he rest in peace. Fr. Edmund taught at schools in Washington, D.C., New York, Ohio, Iowa and Pennsylvania. His career with the University of Dayton spanned more than 36 years. Funeral arrangements were pending at the time of publication of FamilyOnline. Fr. Edmund’s obituary will appear in the next issue of FamilyOnline.

Ross Maguire, 57, who died June 4, 2007, in Australia. Ross was a former Marianist who served in Australia. The Province Office was given a DVD about his life. If you’d like a copy, contact Ann Mueller.

CARDINAL ADAM KOZLOWIECKI DIES AT AGE 96 IN ZAMBIA

Cardinal Adam Kozlowiecki, a Jesuit and retired Archbishop of Lusaka, died on Sept. 28, 2007. Cardinal Kozlowiecki was archbishop of Lusaka, Zambia, from 1959-1969 and was the bishop who invited the Society of Mary to Lusaka. In 1969, he requested that Rome appoint an African archbishop of Lusaka. Cardinal Kozlowiecki continued as a missionary in Zambia and was named a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1998. In his earlier days, Cardinal Kozlowiecki survived imprisonment in Auschwitz and Dachau.

Jim Mifsud (San Jose, Calif.), pastor emeritus of Queen of Apostles Parish in San Jose, who was recently honored by Bon-Woo-Koo, consul general of the Republic of Korea in San Francisco for his “compassionate support of Koreans in times of hardship.” Fr. Jim served as district superior of the Marianists in Korea from 1968 to 1980.

CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY, WEST HILLS. The CCP faculty gathered Oct. 22 with Fr. Jim Mueller, chaplain, for a faculty meeting to share and reflect on the impact of the Marianist charism in their lives and in the school community. Organized by the campus ministry department, the meeting was based on the setting of the Marianist Table, which encourages family spirit and community prayer.

ST. ANTHONY’S SCHOOL in Maui is collecting money to assist people in Peru in rebuilding their homes after the August earthquake. The funds will go to the Marianists and to the Sisters of St. Joseph Carondelet in Peru, who are helping with the relief efforts. To donate, contact Sr. Sara Sanders, CSJ. CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY OF HONOLULU students, faculty and staff took to the phones recently to help Hawaii Public Radio exceed its goal during a recent pledge drive. President Sue Wesselkamper encouraged listeners to pledge while she shared information on Chaminade University and its programs.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL. Bill Pelke, founder of “Journey of Hope ... from Violence to Healing,” spoke Oct. 19 to Bro. Dave Quigley’s religion classes. The organization is led by murder victim family members joined by death row family members, family members of the executed, the exonerated, and others with stories to tell. They conduct public education speaking tours and address alternatives to the death penalty.

In Dublin, the Marianist community Halloween celebration included carving turnips and a pumpkin (imported from Spain). It was Irish immigrants during the famine who brought the tradition of carving turnips, potatoes or beets to the U.S. These lanterns, representing the souls of departed loved ones, were placed in windows or on porches to welcome the deceased.
