TWO BROTHERS ORDAINED IN DISTRICT OF EASTERN AFRICA

On Oct. 13, approximately 500 Marianists, family members and friends gathered at the church of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Nairobi to celebrate the ordination of Bro. Callistus Ooko Jeje and Bro. Michael Otieno Ochieng. The brothers were called to this service by Bro. Chola Mulenga (district superior) and presented to Auxiliary Bishop David Kamua by Fr. Gabriel Kirangah (deputy district superior). The investiture was performed by five directors of Marianist communities in Kenya. Representing the Chaminade Seminary in Rome, where the two brothers studied, was Bro. Tim Phillips. Fr. Allen DeLong was the homilist for the celebration, which included the choir and dancers from Our Lady of the Visitation parish. A reception followed the Eucharist. Fr. Callistus will join the Joseph Davis House community with ministry at IMANI in Nairobi. Fr. Michael will become director of the Marianist community in Mombasa with ministry at St. Martin de Porres parish and the Marianist Development Project. Congratulations and our prayers for Frs. Callistus and Michael!

MARIANIST COMMUNITY IN NAIROBI WELCOMES VISITOR

Marianists in Nairobi recently welcomed Patti Plosaj of Chicago, a generous supporter of the Marianists in Eastern Africa. Patti, who helped support seminarians Bros. Callistus Jeje and Michael Otieno in Rome, came to take part in the Oct. 13 ordination celebration for the two brothers. Patti provided beautiful vestments for the celebration. She also helped furnish the new Chapel of the Visitation at the Faustino House in Lusaka. Patti traveled with Bros. Chola Mulenga (district superior) and Frs. Gabriel Kirangah (deputy district superior) and Callistus Jeje to attend the official opening of the Faustino Formation Centre in Zambia on Oct. 20. Blessings to Patti for her generous contributions!

FORMATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS IN DAYTON

The Formation Advisory Council of the Province met Oct. 19 to Oct. 21 at Bergamo Center in Dayton. The Council includes Fr. George Cerniglia (chair), Bro. Charles Johnson, Frs. Tim Dwyer, Oscar Vasquez and Mike Lisbeth and Bro. Mike O’Grady, Sr. Gretchen Trautman and Sr. Mary Louise Foley. The group discussed vocation ministry and all stages of initial formation. They also touched on developing Hispanic vocations, adhering to immigration policies, vocation advertising, the role of parents in vocation discernment, and the possibility of an aspirancy retreat. In addition to overseeing the formation programs, the meeting offered mutual support for the formators at the various stages of initial formation. Subsequent meetings will occur in April and October 2008.

 

MLNNA LEADERSHIP MEETS TO SET GOALS FOR 2008

The leadership of MLNNA met September 7 to 9 in Dayton to network, set goals for 2008, and identify ways to collaborate more effectively with other Marianist organizations and projects that involve or serve lay Marianists. Representatives from the United States and Canada reported on creative ways that Marianist Lay Communities (MLCs) and individual lay Marianists support spiritual development and social justice in their area. It was reported that the next Continental Assembly will be at Chaminade University of Honolulu in July 2010. (Thanks to Dan Jordan for this report).

PRAYER SERVICE HONORING MADRID MARTYRS AVAILABLE

On Oct. 28, four members of the Society of Mary who lost their lives during the religious persecutions in Spain in 1936 will be beatified in Rome. To commemorate the beatifications, the Province has prepared a prayer service for use by schools, organizations, communities or Marianist lay groups. The prayer service was created by Bro. Bob Jones of Purcell-Marian High School in Dayton. In addition, Bro. Bob Wood (Marianist Residence, San Antonio) has written a hymn to use with the prayer service. The prayer service is available in large and small group formats. View the prayer service materials. (Editor’s note: According to Fr. George Cerniglia, assistant for religious life, with permission from your local Ordinary, the Mass for Several Martyrs can be used in place of the Sunday Liturgy on Oct. 28, the day of the beatification.) MARTYRS OF MADRID CELEBRATIONS PLANNED

A luncheon welcoming new people to the Province office in St. Louis was held Oct. 11. Those honored were Fr. George Cerniglia (assistant for religious life), Bro. Ed Brink (assistant for education), Bro. Joe Grieshaber (assistant treasurer), Ruth Hinde, assistant coordinator for the Marianist Volunteer Program, and Bro. Tony Pistone, who travelled from California to fill in for Bro. Bob Resing at the front desk while Bob is on sabbatical. Visiting the office was Bro. Phil Melcher, a brother of the former St. Louis Province who now serves in Peru.

 

2008 JUBILARIANS; CELEBRATIONS

In 2008, 33 brothers in the Province of the United States will celebrate the anniversary of their first vows and five Marianist priests will celebrate their ordination jubilee. Bro. Franklin Pao (Center Marianist community, Honolulu), 72, who died Oct. 12, 2007, in Honolulu. May he rest in peace. Bro. Franklin served in a number of capacities including secretary to the provincial of the former Province of the Pacific, administrator of the former Villa St. Joseph Healthcare Center and for the last 20 years, as registrar at Saint Louis School in Honolulu. Bro. Franklin was Kahuna Nui of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I for almost 20 years and was a state-licensed Kahuna O’o of Pu’u Kohola Heiau, Temple of State, on the island of Hawai’i since 1994. WHO'S DOING WHAT. . .

Bro. Jim McCaffrey (Marianist Residence, San Antonio) has volunteered 750 hours as a docent at Mission Concepción in San Antonio. The mission was founded by Franciscan Friars in 1731; from 1855 to 1911, the Society of Mary ministered to the people and farmed the land.

Author Michael Crosby’s new book, Finding Francis, Following Christ, features the sculpture of Bro. Joe Aspell on the cover, “St. Francis and the Leper.” The sculpture was created for St. Francis Parish in San Jose, Calif. Order the book.

Provincial Stephen Glodek was recently recognized by the Institute of Integrated Rural Development for the support the Province has given the organization. IIRD assists the rural poor in Bangladesh.

Bro. Bob Moriarty (Vernon, Conn.) was quoted in an article on small Christian communities in the Oct. 19 issue of the Catholic Sentinel. Read the article.

SEVEN MAKE COMMITMENT AS MARIANIST AFFILIATES

On Oct. 19 the first Marianist Affiliate community in Springfield, Ill., was made official when seven men and women participated in a Rite of Affiliation ceremony during Eucharist at Blessed Sacrament parish in Springfield. The new Affiliates are: Merle and Betty King, Loretta Reisinger, Alma and Bob Mandeville, Ann Walker and Terri Maze. Three additional members of the group who were not affiliated at this time are Quinto Cimarossa and Terry and Kate Rossi. Fr. Al McMenamy is the spiritual assistant for this new community and presided at the Eucharist. Bro. Jack Ventura, office of religious life, represented the Provincialate and received the commitment of the new Affiliates. Bro. Ken Jung and Bro. Rich Middleton also shared in the initial formation of the members. The group was started over two years ago by Alma (sister of Fr. Al McMenamy) and Bob Mandeville. Congratulations to the new Affiliates!

The Marianist LIFE Central, Pacific and South regional administrative teams gathered for meetings Oct. 12 to Oct. 14 at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale, Ariz. The teams evaluated the summer LIFE programs, discerned new staff and discussed the national mission and vision of the LIFE program.

 

FROM THE SCHOOLS . . .

COLEGIO SAN JOSÉ school in Puerto Rico organized a canned food and clothing drive to aid victims of a massive earthquake that struck Peru on Aug. 15. The school collected more than 20 boxes of supplies that were sent to Peru through a joint effort with the San Juan government.

BASKETBALL STARS VISIT COLEGIO SAN JOSÉ

Converse, a global retailer of athletic footwear and apparel, conducted a photo shoot with eight NBA basketball players at Colegio San José school on Sept. 10. As a thank you for hosting the photo shoot, Converse gave each of the 512 CSJ students a pair of tennis shoes. While visiting the school, NBA players Dwayne Wade (Miami Heat), (shown left holding a shoe, and Jameer Nelson (Orlando Magic) spoke to the students about the importance of studying and achieving goals. At the far right is Bro. Francisco González, CSJ director.

UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON. Students’ rave reviews have landed the University of Dayton School of Business Administration among the top business schools in the nation. The School of Business Administration is listed in the 2008 edition of Best 290 Business Schools, published by Random House and The Princeton Review. This is the second consecutive year the school made the list, which is compiled based on student surveys. Read more.

CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY in West Hills, Calif., was recently honored for its support of the Marianist LIFE program. For the last four years, through its “Ohana Project,” Chaminade West Hills has raised funds for students needing assistance to attend a LIFE summer program. PURCELL MARIAN, MOELLER HIGH SCHOOLS. Teens Acting for Peace (TAP) is a collaborative effort of St. Francis de Sales Grade School, Purcell Marian and Moeller High Schools, and the Anawim Community in Cincinnati. TAP trains high school students to present and witness to the Pledge of Nonviolence with grade school students in the low-income, African American Marianist school of St. Francis de Sales. In September, Jim McGinnis of the “Institute for Peace and Justice” trained the Moeller and Purcell Marian High School students who will lead TAP this year. TAP is funded by the Marianist Sharing Fund.

ST. LOUIS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FOCUS ON LEADERSHIP

On Oct. 5, students at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco participated in ”Lee Jeans National Denim Day for Breast Cancer Awareness.” The young men wore jeans, pink ribbons and in some cases pink shirts to show their support for breast cancer awareness. The school raised $3,411 to contribute to breast cancer research.
