THE
MARY MINUTE. Marian trivia,
quotes and more by Bro. John Samaha. Christian
Europe was threatened by the Ottoman Turkish Empire
in the sixteenth century. The powerful Turkish fleet
was poised to strike in 1571. Pope St. Pius V, a Dominican,
called on all of Europe to pray the rosary and implore
our Blessed Mother's help. The fleet of several Christian
countries was outnumbered five to one. When the two
fleets clashed in the Gulf of Lepanto off the coast
of Greece on Oct. 1, the battle turned in favor of
the Christian ships and the Turks were defeated. In
thanksgiving the pope declared a new feast in honor
of Our Lady of Victory. This became the feast of Our
Lady of the Rosary, celebrated on Oct. 7 in the month
on the holy rosary. |
