celebration in San Antonio. Photos courtesy of Dennis Bautista |
More
than 150 people attended an appreciation celebration Aug. 26 hosted
by the Marianist Mission for patrons of the Marianist Spiritual Alliance
and Marianist ministry donors living in the San Antonio area. Fr.
Pat Tonry, Marianist Mission spiritual director, presided
at the Mass celebrated at Holy Rosary Parish. He was assisted by
Marianist priests Timothy Dwyer, Richard Loehrlein, Paul
Neumann, Kip Stander and Richard Wosman. The
Mass was followed by a reception in the parish hall, which enabled
those attending to enjoy music and a social while telling their faith
stories to each other and Marianist staff. The event was organized
by Lisa Gooding, executive director of development
for the Province, and Mary Ann Townsend, development
office assistant. The Marianist Mission received 135 prayer intentions
for the Mass, mostly from those who expressed regret that they could
not come. Said Lisa Gooding, “Many of those who came remarked
how thrilled they were to actually meet people associated with a
place (Marianist Mission) that had been a part of their lives for
a long time. We were grateful to get feedback on what the Marianists
and Marianist Mission mean to our patrons and donors, which helps
us develop more meaningful messages and services.”

DAY HONORS THOSE WHO CREATED CUPERTINO CARE CENTER

A special event
to honor those who helped create the newly renovated Marianist
Care Center in Cupertino, Calif., was held Sept. 8. The
center offers full retirement facilities for 27 Marianist brothers
and priests
as well as 10 guest rooms. Three buildings are connected by covered
walkways and include dining for 50, a large chapel, community room
and offices. The center was built in the early 1980s as a formation
house for the former Province of the Pacific and later served as
a retreat center.
The Marianists in Cupertino hosted the event, which included a ribbon
cutting, luncheon and tours of the property. Bro. John Haster, community
director and coordinator of the project, honored many of the individuals
involved in the renovation, including Larry Nibbi of Nibbi Brothers
General Contractors (a graduate of Archbishop Riordan High School in
San Francisco), Mike Nibbi, architect Tony
Panteleoni, also a Riordan
graduate, architect Milan Gill, interior architect Kai
Yee Woo and
landscape architect Robert La Rocca. Also honored were head nurse Grace
Pancipanci and Bros. Stanley Murakami, Tom Suda and
the late Jim Roberts.
“We wanted to honor those who came each day to craft and build
our new home, nail by nail, beam by beam,” said Bro. John. “We
give humble thanks for the work of human hands.”

A special Eucharist
on Aug. 15 celebrated by Bishop Roberto González
Nieves, OFM, Archbishop of San Juan, opened a year of celebrations
commemorating the 70th anniversary of Colegio San José, a
Marianist secondary school for boys in San Juan, Puerto Rico. CSJ
opened its
doors in 1938 with a community of nine Marianist brothers. It was
the first school in Puerto Rico accredited by the Middle States Association
of Colleges and Schools and in 1994 was recognized as a Blue Ribbon
School by the U.S. Department of Education. A highlight of the Mass
was the renewal of vows of Bro. Francisco González,
CSJ director, who is celebrating his 25th anniversary as a Marianist
brother.
 CSJ
also is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the restoration
of its chapel. In 1972, Marianist artist Bro. Mel
Meyer directed
the restoration of the chapel, which includes several fresco paintings.

THE
MARY MINUTE. Marian
trivia, quotes and more by Bro. John Samaha. Even
those who are not avid football fans know the term “Hail
Mary pass” used by sports announcers to describe
a desperation throw by a quarterback hoping for a score.
From football the term has
passed to other sports and areas of life to describe
an act that almost requires divine intervention to succeed.
The term “Hail Mary pass” was coined by Dallas
Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach,
a Hall of Famer and a Catholic. After his game-winning,
last-minute touchdown pass in a December 1975 game, he
explained what happened to reporters. He threw the ball
as hard as he could to receiver Drew Pearson downfield,
then prayed a Hail Mary. Pearson caught the desperate
pass and ran into the end zone for a touchdown. |
