THREE MEN ENTER NOVITIATE COMMUNITY IN DAYTON

On Aug. 17, Aspirants Brandon Alana, Jeff Campbell and Ray Dominguez made their formal commitment as novices in the Society of Mary, and Novice Tom Farnsworth renewed his commitment to the novitiate. Novice Luis Gamboa will be renewing his commitment this fall in Honolulu, where he is teaching at Chaminade University. Fr. Mike Lisbeth, novice director, and Bro. Mike O’Grady, assistant novice director, presided at the commitment ceremony at the Marianist novitiate in Dayton. The ceremony was held at the conclusion of a five-day retreat the men attended at the Milford Spiritual Center in Milford, Ohio. Bro. Dennis Schmitz (Hale Malia, Honolulu) and Fr. George Cerniglia, assistant for religious life, facilitated the retreat. In addition to sessions on the novitiate journey, the retreat included a visit to the National Underground Freedom Center in Cincinnati. Our prayers for the new novices!

JUBILARIANS CELEBRATE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON

More than 300 Marianists, family members and friends attended a jubilee celebration honoring 12 Marianists on Aug. 11 at the Immaculate Conception Chapel on the campus of the University of Dayton. Fr. George Cerniglia, assistant for religious life, was the main celebrant, and Fr. Pat Tonry (Chambers Street, Dayton) was the homilist. Provincial Council members Fr. Steve Tutas, councilor, and Bro. Ed Brink, assistant for education, also attended. Congratulations to the jubilarians!

Congratulations to Brian Reavey, national coordinator for Marianist LIFE, and Marg Van Herk-Paradis, advisory board chair for Marianist LIFE, who made a public commitment as Lay Marianist Affiliates during a LIFE Marianist Family Gathering event July 14 at Bergamo Center in Dayton. REMEMBERING FR. EMIL NEUBERT, SM (1878-1967)

On Aug. 29, 2007, the Marianist Family marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Fr. Emile Neubert, SM. Fr. Neubert was director of the Marianist International Seminary in Fribourg, Switzerland, for over a quarter century and a member of the International Marian Academy. He was the most renowned and prolific Marianist writer on the subject of Mary and was characterized as the “foremost doctor of Mariology among the sons of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade.” This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the completion and acceptance of his noted doctoral dissertation in patristic theology on Mary in the pre-Nicene Church. This was the first doctoral dissertation centered on Mary in patrology and theology. Read a tribute to Fr. Neubert.

GOVERNOR’S ISLAND “ALL IN THE FAMILY” PROJECT


It was a group effort remodeling the Marianist community room at Governor’s Island in Huntsville, Ohio. Shown hard at work, Fr. Jim Russell, Steve and Janet Dougherty (old UD sodality and Family of Mary friends from Louisville) and Bros. Paul Bredestege, director, Charles Gausling and Bill Deanhofer. The group replaced wallboard, rewired outlets, hung ceiling tile and fitted woodwork, doing almost all the work themselves.

 

WHO'S DOING WHAT. . .

“It was a frightening experience. I have not experienced anything like it before in my life,” says Bro. Brian Halderman of the earthquake that struck Aug. 15 near Lima, Peru. Bro. Brian is spending a year in Peru to minister at the Instituto Chaminade Marianista. He is sharing his experiences at his new blog—“Blogging Bro. Brian.”

Bro. Stephen Glodek, provincial, and Fr. Jim Fitz, assistant provincial, attended the Conference of Major Superiors of Men Aug. 10 to Aug. 13 in Cleveland. The meeting theme was “Enhancing Our Charisms, Living Out Our Religious Life.” The CMSM is an organization that offers support and resources for U.S. leaders of Catholic men’s religious institutes. Bro. Mel Meyer (Curé of Ars, St. Louis) and Bro. Brian Zampier (Marybrook, St. Louis) recently installed a sculpture in the lobby of Barat Academy, a new Catholic High School opening in St. Charles, Mo., this fall.

Bro. John Samaha (Cupertino, Calif.) wrote a commentary on the solemnity of the Feast of the Assumption. The commentary appeared in the August 10 issue of Catholic San Francisco. Read the commentary.

Bro. Leo Willett (Novitiate, Dayton) is being honored with a special farewell celebration and 82nd birthday party Aug. 25 at the novitiate community. Bro. Leo is leaving the novitiate community to join the Marianist Residence community in San Antonio. Read the invitation.

Congratulations to former Marianist volunteer Norman Capinpin, who was commissioned on July 26 as a teacher in the Partners in Los Angeles Catholic Education (PLACE) Corps. Norman is a 2004 graduate of Chaminade University of Honolulu.

Congratulations to Sr. Angela Ann Zukowski, a Missionary Helper of the Sacred Heart and University of Dayton faculty member, who was received as a Marianist Affiliate in the Queen of Apostles-Lady of the Pillar affiliate group. The affiliation ceremony was held at the Stonemill community chapel in Dayton.

Julie Jones, a recent University of Dayton graduate and former artist in residence, has created an art exhibit featuring photos from Mount St. John in Dayton. The exhibit is on display in Marianist Hall at UD. The images will be accompanied by reflections written by people who live, work and visit Mount St. John.

MARIANISTS ATTEND CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES CONFERENCE

CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Central Catholic High School building in downtown San Antonio. The 155-year-old school was originally built near the river. The late Bro. John Waldron was sent from St. Louis in the 1920s to plan the existing school site. Read more.
