Four
students have been selected as the first recipients of scholarships
to Central Catholic High School as part
of the Marianist Urban Students Program launched in San Antonio in
August 2006. The students are Andrew Villarreal, Salvador Perez,
Jr., Vincent Villarreal and Alex Montoya. Vincent
is a graduate of St. Mary Magdalen grade school, and Salvador, Andrew
and Alex attend Holy Rosary parish in San Antonio. The MUSP program
identifies high-potential students in urban elementary schools and
offers them tuition assistance, leadership training, academic coaching,
personal mentoring, service opportunities and enrichment activities. “My
goal is to expand the horizons of these students and instill a desire
to be of service in their communities,” said Bro.
Richard Thompson, director of the Central Catholic MUSP Program.
Bro. Richard will monitor the academic progress, service and co-curricular
activities of each MUSP student. Scholarship recipients are selected
on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, leadership skills,
attendance and community service. “We look forward to the integration
of this program into our efforts to serve young men seeking a quality,
Catholic education with strong leadership training, “said Fr.
Joseph Tarrillion, president of Central Catholic. MUSP programs
also are in place at two other Marianist high schools—Villa Angela-St.
Joseph in Cleveland and Purcell Marian in Cincinnati.
