More than 300 brothers, priests, sisters, lay Marianists and staff attended the Province Assembly, June 25 to July 1 in Tucson. The theme of the assembly was “Come to the Desert: Becoming Brothers, Finding Life.” Bro. Jack Ventura, assembly committee chair, gave the opening remarks and welcomed The Most Reverend Gerald Kicanas, D.D., bishop of Tucson, who participated in the opening ritual. Read Bro. Jack’s remarks. A special native American welcome also was given by Navajo Tony Redhouse. Assembly speakers for the week included Sr. Mary Bendyna, RSM, who discussed “The Challenge of Brotherhood,” and Bro. Loughlan Sofield, ST, who spoke on “Signs of Life in the Desert.” Provincial Stephen Glodek spoke on “Mixed Composition.” Read Bro. Stephen’s address.

The facilitators for the gathering were Sister Miriam D. Ukeritis, CSJ, and Fr. David Couturier, OFM Cap. Lay Marianists Tony and Jean Fitzgerald, Leah Kauffman, Toni Mesina and Mike Wasno participated in a panel discussion titled “Together We Are Marianists.” Joining the assembly were members of the General Administration of the Society of Mary in Rome, the Marianist Sisters, Marianist Lay Communities, Marianist Lay Network of North America and representatives from Province offices. Representatives from the Province of Meribah and the Districts of Mexico, India and Eastern Africa also attended. “The assembly was worth two thumbs up,” said Fr. Bob Backherms, Mercy Siena, Dayton. “It was a wonderful experience, affirming the whole Marianist family. It helped us all grow in grace and wisdom.” Fr. Gabriel Kirangah, deputy district superior of Eastern Africa, felt the meeting gave brothers renewed confidence and hope. “The lesson for me was: Keep alive the Marianist charism and pass it on to the future Marianist, religious or lay. Make sure someone keeps the good work emanating from our Marianist charism,” he said. The Province Assembly was the culmination of more than two years of planning and coordination by the Province Assembly Committee, including Bro. Jack Ventura, Fr. Larry Doersching, Diane Guerra, Bro. John Haster, Bro. Frank O’Donnell, Bro. Jack Somerville and Pat Stephens. A special thanks to Donna Tucker, of the West Pine staff, for her assistance with coordinating the event. Congratulations to all on a job well done!

ASSEMBLY PROVIDED A “TASTE OF TUCSON” AND MORE

In addition to presentations and time for group discussions, the Province Assembly offered a little something for everyone. Prayer services and liturgies, coordinated by Sr. Mary Kay Kelly, SSJ, and Cathy Johnson, included the many talents and cultures of the Province. During the liturgies, special times were set aside to recognize the 2007 jubilarians as well as all Marianists who have died since the Province began on July 1, 2002. Also, those in temporary profession renewed their vows. Recreational activities included an evening of star gazing through high-powered telescopes on the hotel patio and an ice cream social, “A Taste of Tucson,” where attendees could sample local restaurants, and a “free day” on Friday where attendees could chose from activities such as hiking, an immersion trip to Mexico, shopping or relaxing at the hotel.
