FR. TIMOTHY KIM APPOINTED REGIONAL SUPERIOR
OF KOREA

Fr. Timothy Kim

Provincial Brother Stephen Glodek has appointed Fr. Timothy Kim regional superior of Korea, effective with Korea's regional assembly this spring, for a renewable three-year term. Bro. Stephen made the appointment after consulting the Provincial Council, which studied consultation forms from the Korean religious and reports from Fr. Joe Lackner, who interviewed all members of the Korean region in November and December 2002.

Bro. Mateo Woo

Bro. Mateo Woo, who has served as regional superior of Korea for three years, has been asked by the Provincial Council to devote his time to the possibility of a Korean Marianist implantation in China. "Because of Brother Mateo's enthusiasm … to this new implantation, (we're) asking that he devote focused energy …. on this exciting apostolic initiative," wrote Bro. Stephen in a letter to the Brothers in Korea. "Brother Mateo has shown great concern for the revitalization of the community life in the Region …. He (also) has promoted vocation ministry in new and creative ways."

Fr. Timothy Kim, 39, attended Marianist High School in Mokpo, Korea, and entered the novitiate when he was 23. In 1988, he professed first vows, and four years later, his final vows. In 1997, Fr. Tim was ordained a priest in Korea. He earned a bachelor's degree in theology from Seoul Catholic University and a master's of divinity from St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park, Calif. In 2001, he received his STL/STD in Mariology from the International Marian Research Institute in Dayton. Fr. Tim has served as a councillor in the regional council; director of development; vocation director; formator; assistant for religious life; and laity coordinator. In 2001, he was elected president of the Mariological society in
Korea.

"We thank Father Timothy for his willingness to be of service …. and to Brother Mateo for his years of service and leadership as Regional Superior." To read Bro. Glodek's letter to the Brothers of Korea, please click here:

WHO'S DOING WHAT

Bro. Victor Forlani

Bro. Victor Forlani (Washington Street Community, Dayton), and Bro. Tom Giardino (Trinity Avenue Community, Dayton) are key members of the Catholic and Marianist Advisory Committee at the School of Business Administration at the University of Dayton. The committee will study and define the qualities that make UD's business school different from other business schools and uniquely Marianist. The group will review such efforts as business student orientation; forums for faculty on religion and business ethics; and ethics discussions between students and business people. Fr. Chris Conlon in campus ministry also has worked on this effort for several years.

Congratulations also to Bro. Victor on a successful presentation to the Dayton chapter of the American Marketing Association on "Marketing: the Lead Function in Ethical Business Practice." Bro. Victor and Irene Dickey of UD's business school described ways to judge the ethics of various approaches to sales and marketing.

Bros. Bob Donovan and Mitch Schweickart (Findlay Street Community, Cincinnati) joined about 300 individuals in March when they participated in one of many candlelight vigils for peace in Cincinnati, protesting military action in Iraq. Members of the Findlay Street Community and the State Lay Community have been meeting to discuss Gandhi's tenets of nonviolence and ways to put the tenets into practice.

Both Fr. Tom Thompson (Alumni Hall, Dayton) and Bro. John Samaha (Villa St. Joseph, Cupertino) published papers in recent issues of Ephemerides Mariologicae, an international Marian review. Fr. Tom's paper, "Our Lady, Conversion, Converts," appeared in the October-December 2002 issue. Bro. LIFE PROGRAM AT VASJ HIGH SCHOOL

Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School in Cleveland has revived and restructured its LIFE (Living In Faith Experiences) program. The group meets weekly and will participate in a summer retreat experience.

WITNESS TO HISTORY

Bro. Al Koch (Cape May Point, New Jersey) was witness to a watershed event in American history: the August 1963 "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom" that included the Rev. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. According to an article in The Press in Atlantic City, Bro. Al was a 31-year-old Marianist student at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., who waited for three hours on a miserably hot day to hear Rev. King's keynote speech. The marchers' demands included school desegregation, fair employment and decent housing. Other noteworthy individuals present that day at the Lincoln Memorial: singers Marian Anderson, Mahalia Jackson and Peter, Paul and Mary; Mrs. Medgar Evers; Roy Wilkins, executive secretary of the NAACP; and the Very Rev. Patrick O'Boyle, archbishop of Washington. Bro. Al said, "It (King's speech) made all people aware of the importance of the healing power of each other, toward each other."

A THOUGHT

"Instead of loving what you think is peace,
love others and love God above all.
And, instead of hating the people
you think are warmongers,
hate the appetite and the disorder
of your own soul,
which are the causes of war.
If you love peace,
then hate injustice, hate tyranny, hate greed
but hate these things in yourself,
not in another."
     Thomas Merton
