FOUR BROTHERS INSTALLED IN MINISTRIES AT SEMINARY

On April 30, 2007, four brothers of the Province studying at the Marianist seminary in Rome were installed in ministries. Bros. Richard Villa and Patrick McDaid were installed in the ministry of acolyte; Bros. Sudhir Kujur (District of India) and Stephen Wany’oike (District of Eastern Africa) were installed in the ministry of lector. Superior General Fr. Manuel Cortés presided at the Mass of Installation. Provincial Stephen Glodek represented the Provincial Council. Our congratulations to these seminarians!

SAN ANTONIO CELEBRATES JUBILEES

On April 28, nine jubilarians were honored at a special Mass and reception at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel on the campus of St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Fr. Jim Fitz, assistant provincial, presided at the Mass and witnessed the renewal of vows. Fr. Tim Dwyer (Casa Maria, San Antonio) gave the homily. Approximately 230 brothers, sisters, friends and relatives attended the event.

Congratulations to Bro. Larry Corbin, who has been appointed acting director of the new Baltimore community and to Fr. Gerry Pleva, who has been appointed acting director for the Wailuku, Maui, community. Both appointments are effective through Aug. 15, 2007.

FR. RUDY VELA PRESENTS AT AFRICAN SISTERS’ ASSEMBLY

Fr. Rudy Vela (Ligustrum, San Antonio) and Sr. Francis Cunningham, OSF, presented materials from their “Cultural Audit Program” to the Provincial Assembly of the Tertiary Sisters of St. Francis April 13 to April 21 in Cameroon, West Africa. The “Cultural Audit Program” discusses how culture can influence thinking and behavior. Three communities of U.S.-based Franciscan sisters have been collaborating with the sisters in Cameroon for the past decade. “It was an enriching experience,” said Fr. Rudy. “Fran and I learned more from the African sisters than one can ever imagine.

 

WORLD DAY OF VOCATIONS REFLECTIONS

Commenting on the World Day of Prayer for Vocations on April 29, Bro. Charles Johnson, national vocations director, said,“I believe April 29 is important, but what about April 30 and the other days of the year? PROVINCE RETREATS 2007

The major Province retreat for this summer will be our gathering at the Province Assembly in Tucson, which will include sharing, reflection and celebrating God’s presence in our brotherhood. The theme of the assembly is “Come to the Desert: Becoming Brothers, Finding Life.”

For brothers who need a different type of experience or are unable to attend the assembly, two alternative opportunities are scheduled (see below). Both retreats will deal with the topic of “Mary, Our Mother.” As in the past, the local community covers the expense of travel. For registration, contact Donna Tucker in the Office of Religious Life. Deadline is May 15.

The Marianist sisters hosted an Easter Sunday gathering for the Marianist family at the Our Lady of Pillar community in San Antonio. Members of the Casa Maria and Woodlawn communities and Marianist volunteers Norman Capinpin, Jordan Kaderli and Chris Nieport joined the sisters for morning liturgy and an Easter meal.

MARIANIST EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATES MAKE COMMITMENT


University of Dayton Marianist Educational Associates

University of Dayton faculty and staff members who have embraced the Marianist charism made public commitments as Marianist Educational Associates at a prayer service April 24 at Immaculate Conception Chapel on the UD campus. MEAs work to incorporate and adapt Marianist traditions to be effective on today’s campus. At the ceremony, nine new UD colleagues joined the 18 existing MEA members. Congratulations to the UD MEA class of 2007!

Fr. Edwin Johnson (West Hills, Calif.), 81, who died April 25, 2007. May he rest in peace. Fr. Edwin professed first vows in 1962 at Marynook in Galesville, Wis., and was ordained in 1986 in San Jose, Calif. Fr. Edwin served as a teacher, principal, guidance director, chaplain, spiritual director and campus minister. For the last 11 years he was chaplain at Chaminade College Preparatory in West Hills, and Chatsworth, Calif. A funeral Mass was held today at Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Canoga Park, Calif. Auxiliary Bishop Gerald Wilkerson was the presider and homilist. Fr. Tim Kenney represented the Provincial Council. A second funeral Mass will be held May 4 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Cupertino. Fr. Steve Tutas will be the presider and Fr. David Schuyler will be the homilist. Burial is May 5 at 11 a.m. at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Read a poem written in tribute of Fr. Edwin by Chaminade teacher Michael O’Palko. Fr. Edwin’s obituary will appear in the next issue of FamilyOnline.

FAUSTINO CARVING ADDS FINISHING TOUCH TO FORMATION CENTER

Rwandan refugee Frederick Sibomana shows his carving of Faustino Pèrez-Manglano, a deceased student who exemplified the Marianist charism and is now a Marianist “servant of God.” The carving will hang at the entrance to the new Faustino Formation Center in Lusaka, Zambia. According to Fr. Martin Solma, construction of the center will be completed this month at which time the first group of live-in candidates begin a month-long program. Bro. Erick Otiende is the community and recruitment director for the Faustino Formation Center.

 

UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON COMMUNITY SALUTES FR. NORB BURNS

On April 24, Fr. Norbert Burns (Indiana Avenue, Dayton) taught his final “Christian Marriage” course at the University of Dayton. An estimated 27,000 students have taken the popular class, taught by Fr. Norb for the past 44 years. The UD community honored Fr. Norb on April 15 with a retirement celebration that included comments from Dan Curran, UD president.

Fr. Paul Marshall, UD rector, led the traditional toast of Marianist hospitality, “Er lebe hoch” (May you live well). Congratulations and our prayers for Fr. Norb in his future endeavors. RESING ART FEATURED ON NEW MARIANIST MISSION OFFERING

The artwork of Bro. Bob Resing (Maryland Avenue, St. Louis) is featured on a new living enrollment booklet being test marketed by the Marianist Mission. The “God Bless You on this Joyous Occasion” booklet is the result of market research that indicated a need for a booklet to celebrate happy occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays and baptisms. The booklet is available on the Marianist Mission Web site or at Bro. Bob’s Web site. A series of “all occasion” cards featuring Bro. Bob’s artwork will be available this summer. Read more.

 

MARIANIST ARTISTS VISIT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Bros. Don Smith (Meyer Hall, Dayton) and Brian Zampier (Marybrook, St. Louis) took their efforts to increase artist vocations on the road with a visit to Daniel J. Gross High School in Bellevue, Neb., April 19 -20. The brothers presented their works to art students and discussed their lives as Marianist brothers and artists. The school’s art teacher, CaSandra Johnson, participated in the Marianist artist vocation retreat held last March in Eureka, Mo.

 

WHO'S DOING WHAT. . .

Bro. Reinaldo Berríos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and fellow researchers Dr. Ivonne Romero-García and Dr. Alicia Rivero-Vergne presented their study on “Multiple Perspectives of the Puerto Rican Pediatric Cancer Experience” on April 25 to graduate students, friends and faculty at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. The researchers discussed their findings after studying four children and three adolescents with cancer, their parents, oncologists and nurses. Read more.

Provincial Stephen Glodek will give the keynote address at the 36th annual convention of the Religious Brothers Conference July 27 to July 30 in St. Louis. Bro. Stephen’s talk will be based in part on the final CARA report on the “Study of Brothers in the United States.”


Gallery St. John home page

The works of four Marianist artists— Bros. Don Smith, John Lemker, Joe Barrish and Charles Wanda— are featured on the new Gallery St. John web site at www.dayton-gallery-saintjohn.org. Gallery St. John is a not-for-profit art gallery operated by the Society of Mary in Dayton.


Bro. John Samaha (Villa St. Joseph, Cupertino) published an article titled “The Vocation of Mary in Eastern Christian Tradition” in the January/March 2007 issue of Vocations and Prayer magazine. Read the article. Bro. John also wrote an article on ecumenical councils for the May/June issue of The Catholic Answer magazine.

Bro. Brian Zampier (Marybrook, St. Louis) is presenting on the uses and types of sketchbooks at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild on May 17.

Bro. John Lemker (novitiate, Dayton) will present an exhibit of nature photographs entitled “Moments to Contemplate” at the Gallery at St. John May 2 to June 24.

Charles Cotrell, president of St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, joined Archbishop José H. Gomez, Mayor Phil Hardberger and other community leaders in a symposium March 3 on the moral vision of San Antonio. Read more.

 

PEACE & JUSTICE UPDATE:

2007 Supplemental Appropriations Bill will determine policy and funding for many critical issues, including an increase in the minimum wage and assistance for humanitarian emergencies. Urge key members to support funding for these initiatives. Find out more.

“Say On Pay” Proposals. The Marianist Province of the U.S. is helping sponsor several proposals to give shareholders a vote on executive compensation. Marianist Sharing Fund Applications Now Being Accepted The criteria and application forms for 2007-2008 Sharing Fund grants are available online. MARIANIST SOCIAL JUSTICE COLLABORATIVE

Marianists Protest Execution in Ohio. Members of the Marianist family were present at the vigil during the execution of James Filiaggi on April 24 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, Ohio. Filiaggi had sought to challenge the constitutionality of lethal injection. The Marianist representatives gathered in prayer and quiet protest with 25 others from around the state. The New York City/Northern New Jersey Marianist Young Adult group celebrated its first anniversary on April 24. Founder Sara Durand and animator Brian Reavey report that the group is very committed and continuing to thrive. Most recently, they have been reading, studying and discussing “Growing in the Virtues of Jesus” by Fr. Quentin Hakenewerth (District of Mexico).

UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON student Alison Cawley received the 2007 Maureen E. O’Rourke Marianist Student Award which is given to a graduating senior who exemplifies the Marianist charism on campus. Alison has been a mentor to younger students and active participant in several Marianist activities, including the Marianist student community, Marianist Universities Meetings and the Marianist Fellows. The Marianist “State” lay community, which includes 22 members living in 11 states, met for its semiannual retreat April 14 to April 15 in Philadelphia. The retreat included the renewal of the vow of stability by the community members and reflection on the ways people pray. Fr. Quentin Hakenewerth (District of Mexico) was the resource person for the retreat. Sr. Mary Louise Foley is the Marianist consultor/liaison for the group. Chris Nieport and Chelsea Korfel, who are members of the Branches community, a lay community of recent University of Dayton graduates, also attended and renewed vows.
