BRO.
MULENGA NAMED DISTRICT SUPERIOR FOR EASTERN AFRICA

Bro.
Chola Mulenga |
Provincial
Stephen Glodek announces the appointment of Bro.
Valentine Chola Mulenga to a three-year term as district
superior of Eastern
Africa.
The Provincial Council also named Fr.
Gabriel Ng'ang'a Kirangah, 38,
deputy district superior.
“The District
of Eastern Africa is poised at a historic moment as the brothers
there move closer to becoming an independent
unit of the Society of Mary,” said Bro. Stephen. “Bro.
Chola and Fr. Gabriel carry the confidence of their brothers and
the Provincial Council to lead Eastern Africa at this important moment.
We are very pleased at the generosity of heart and self-sacrifice that
marked their acceptance of these leadership roles.”
Bro.
Chola, 42, professed first vows in 1994 and perpetual vows
in 1999. He has served as deputy district superior since 2004 and as
councilor
prior to that. Bro. Chola is the director of the Marianist Scholasticate
in Nairobi, Kenya, and head of temporalities. He was director of
aspirants in the district for four years and was vocation director
in Zambia for three years before returning to Kenya. He has a
degree from Catholic University of Eastern Africa. In 2006, the District
of Africa elected
Bro. Chola as its delegate to the General Chapter. He was the first
elected African delegate from the district to attend a General Chapter.
Fr. Gabriel professed first vows in 1995 and was ordained
in 2005.
He was the first Marianist to be ordained a priest in the District
of Eastern Africa. Fr. Gabriel has served as councilor since 2005
and
was in the seminary
prior to that.

Fr.
Gabriel Kirangah at his ordination |
The Provincial Council
wishes to thank Fr. Martin Solma, who is at the end of his three-year
term as district superior, for
his wonderful ministry.
Fr. Martin
will remain in Eastern Africa, but his ministry has not been decided.
The transition date for the new leadership and appointments of the
other members
of the District
Council are pending.
Our prayers and heartiest
congratulations to these men! Read the latest District
of Eastern Africa Letter.

NATIONAL STRUCTURE TO BOOST MARIANIST LAY FORMATION

Pati
Krasensky
|
In
an effort to unify, support and strengthen Marianist lay formation
and lay programs,
the ministry of the Center for Marianist Spirituality
and Communities (CMSC) in Philadelphia and the Marianist Lay Formation
Initiative (MLFI) will come under the mantle of the North American
Center for Marianist Studies, effective July 1, 2007. NACMS
is a Province ministry located in Dayton. Pati
Krasensky, a Lay Marianist
Affiliate from Long Island, N.Y., has been appointed NACMS’ associate
director for community development and will be responsible for MLFI
and all programs and activities formerly coordinated by the CMSC.
Pati has served as interim director for the CMSC since the death
of Bro.
Walt Oberster in January 2006.

Bro. Jack Ventura
|
“These changes are a strong signal that the Province is committed
to lay Marianist formation,” said Bro. Jack Ventura, assistant
in the Office of Religious Life. “This unified structure will
allow us to continue regional lay efforts and add to the existing national
presence of NACMS.” The three Marianist ministries in Philadelphia – CMSC,
NACMS and Marianist LIFE – will remain in the same office building
on N. Delaware Avenue, but will move to larger quarters. Those in the
Philadelphia office include Ray McCracken (NACMS associate director
for programs), Ben Dougherty (NACMS intern), Brian
Reavey (national
coordinator of Marianist LIFE) and Marie Wyman, administrative assistant.

Carol Ramey |
“For
NACMS, this is an invigorating opportunity to expand and deepen our
service to the Marianist family,” said Carol Ramey, director
of NACMS. “We feel honored to help form and sustain Marianist
lay communities and to work with the unique ministries of Marianists
on the East Coast. We anticipate a good harvest in many Marianist
settings from the seeds the Province has sown by bringing us together.”
Pati
Krasensky says she’s excited by the chance to collaborate
with a wider network of lay and religious Marianists. “NACMS
will continue to spread the Marianist charism nationwide while maintaining
and expanding the important programming of the CMSC,” Pati said. “The
strengths of the CMSC over the past 40 years have been the programs
and the Center’s ability to network and support those programs
through dedicated volunteer efforts.”
The Province and the Marianist Family Council of North America thank
Joan McGuinness Wagner for her efforts in launching the Marianist Lay
Formation Initiative that will be incorporated into this new structure.

19, the Feast of St. Joseph and the 157th anniversary of
the purchase
of the land on which UD is built. Fr. Paul Marshall, UD rector,
gave the blessing. Dan Curran, UD president, and Dick
Ferguson, executive
director of the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community and
UD historian, addressed the crowd.
Fr.
Leo Meyer’s bureau |
Located next to St.
Mary Hall, the Heritage Center is a newly renovated, turn-of the-century
brick building that contains
artifacts, photographs,
narratives and multimedia displays that trace UD and Marianist
history.
Among the artifacts
is the original bureau of Fr. Leo Meyer, S.M., UD’s
founder. The bureau is said to have been used as an altar to celebrate
the Feast
of St. Joseph on March 19, 1850, after Fr. Meyer purchased the
land for UD. In his remarks, Dan Curran expressed admiration for
Fr. Meyer’s ingenuity in offering a St. Joseph’s medal

VOLUNTEER BUILDS HOMES AND COMMUNITY IN NEW ORLEANS
Marianist
volunteer John Graziano began his volunteer experience last August
helping
Catholic Charities gut houses in New Orleans devastated
by Hurricane Katrina. “I couldn’t believe the scope of
the damage,” said John. “You could drive 15 miles in any
direction and it was the same thing.”
We recently asked John to reflect on his volunteer experience and
time in New Orleans.
What was your
initial reaction to working in New Orleans? “It
was different being here at first because of the destructive nature
of the work, but wonderful when I recognized why I was doing the work
and who it was for. It could become just a job, if I let it, but when
I had time to reflect, I could see the work was helping others.”
What are you
working on now? “I’m getting materials
to sites and staying one step ahead of the contractors. I miss
the physical
work, but I have more time to talk with the homeowners and hear their
stories. Read more of the interview and read
an article from the New Orleans Times-Picayune about John.

AN
EASTER REFLECTION
I suspect Jesus was
never more human than on the night before he died.
Gathering
his dearest friends around him, he wondered the same things each
of us wonder
in the face of death: “Will anyone remember me when I am gone,
will anything I have done make any difference at all?”
Then he took bread,
blessed it and broke it and taught us, when there are no more deeds
to be done, no more miracles to be worked, no more parables to be
spoken, the greatest gift remains to be given: Real Presence.
It
is the gift each of us can give…
