FUTURE OF MARIANIST PARISHES BEING DISCERNED

Marianist parishes clockwise from top left, St. Aloysius in Cleveland, St. Joseph in Eldersburg, Md., St. Frances de Sales in Cincinnati and Holy Rosary in San Antonio.

Over the past several years, members of the Provincial Council and the Provincial Chapter have discussed with those in parish ministry the future of Marianist parishes, due to concerns about the age of many of its parish ministers. The Province considers parishes an excellent way for Marianists to serve and wants to continue parish ministry in the most effective way. After much prayer and discernment, the Provincial Council has decided that the Province will not be able to continue its work at every parish.

The Provincial Council has decided the Province will commit itself to the following four parishes: Holy Rosary in San Antonio, St. Aloysius in Cleveland,
St. Frances de Sales in Cincinnati and St. Joseph in Eldersburg, Md. Three of the parishes are in areas which need support and serve the economically poor. The fourth, St. Joseph parish, located in the suburban community of Eldersburg, is a vibrant ministry for the Province on the East Coast. The future of the other parishes is being discerned. Read the Council’s discussion on the future of Marianist parishes.

COUNCIL CLOSES NEW ORLEANS COMMUNITY

Madeleine community house in New Orleans

After months of discernment, the Provincial Council has decided that Marianist religious will leave the Madeleine House community in New Orleans, effective Oct. 1, 2006. Madeleine House was a unique living arrangement where religious and lay Marianists lived together in community. Faced with increasing resource issues, Provincial Stephen Glodek said the Province is unable to support a Marianist religious presence in New Orleans. Bros. Paul Galantowicz and Larry Corbin were the Marianist religious of the Madeleine House community. Bro. Paul has requested exclaustration from the Society of Mary, pending an official declaration from Rome. Bro. Larry’s assignment is pending. The Madeleine House will continue to have a lay Marianist presence for the near future.

A view of Verrina High School in New Orleans, constructed before the Civil War.

Madeleine House is the fifth Marianist community in New Orleans. The first two were involved in elementary schools, St. Mary’s (1869 to 1882) and St. Alphonsus (1878 to 1896), and were established when there was a single Marianist Province in the U.S. in the late 1800s. The second two communities ran high schools, Verrina in St. Stephen’s parish (1916 to 1925) and Ligouri in St. Alphonsus parish (1915 to 1926), and were established under the former St. Louis Province. The brothers were dismissed from both high schools in the mid-1920s and replaced by women religious. The fifth community, now known as Madeleine House, was initiated by the former St. Louis Province in 1988. The Province would like to thank all the brothers who served the New Orleans community for their tremendous efforts.

SUMMER PROGRAM UPDATE

High school students, young adults and adult participants gather at the Marianist LIFE summer program in Mission Springs, Calif.

Brian Reavey, national coordinator for Marianist LIFE, reports that more than 200 high school students and 100 adults participated in three summer LIFE programs in California, Ohio and Texas. Twenty-eight high schools and parishes attended from 10 states and Puerto Rico. Three adult observers attended from St. Laurence College in Ireland, with the hope of bringing student participants in 2007. Students experienced faith formation with a strong focus on leadership, prayer, social justice, community building, faith sharing, and the sacraments. The goal of the program is for student leaders and adult moderators to return to their home institution and continue to build communities of faith in their high schools and parishes. College-aged students participated in two Marianist LIFE reunions in Ohio and Texas this past summer. Two additional reunions in California and Hawaii are being developed.
